How do they compare to google? Whoever has the worst snacks is probably winning on other grounds. Some talk @thehertieschool last year made me realise that the best companies also don’t pay the highest salaries, because they don’t want a bunch of transient employees chasing that. (The talk plus my sister working for Coke as a sysadmin while caring for my dying father. No salary would make her move now.) #fow #gafam

  2. Ordinarily I assume stories about laying people off because they’re replaced with AI are really about economic layoffs masked as “modernising”, because why not keep your increasingly productive employees? But maybe some companies really have bought the hype.

  5. Are there really more heists lately? If so, is it because thieves are smarter with prosthetic intelligence? Could that smartness also get them legitimate jobs? www.dw.com/en/italy-thi... #AIEthics #FutureOfWork #FoW

I suspect most “AI” redundancies [UK] layoffs [US] are about shielding either bad economic news or simple downsizing with a façade of modernisation. #AIEthics #FoW Amazon hired as its delivery demand peaked during the COVID pandemic, meaning analysts anticipated layoffs. www.dw.com/en/amazon-to...

  7. Further fuelling my suspicion that most “AI” redundancies [UK] layoffs [US] have nothing to do with AI, but rather try to shield either bad economic news or simple downsizing with a façade of modernisation. #AIEthics #FoW

  9. If anyone wants an editorial about tiktok, labour, IP, AI and the strikes in Berlin and London (any other locations?) @ankehassel.bsky.social and I have written one but are having trouble penetrating the AI-overloaded submission systems… #digitalGovernance #tikTok #IP #AIEthics #FoW #geoeconomics

  10. To be fair, content moderation is terrible work we all want ai assistance for. Has anyone written about ideal, just AI migration? How long should former employees get royalties on their data? How many employees should be retained? How should they be protected whilst responsible & effective? #fow 1/2

  11. Something from yesterday's discussion of that MIT study. I replied "And what if there are diverse / differentiated outcomes? Can people (and school systems) handle it if there are only some people who learn some things better when using technology?" which led to a discussion... 1/2? #AIEthics #FoW

  12. This one is great on #AIEthics #FoW but I think it attributes too much to capitalism, not enough to the US, which I agree with the article I've linked it under, might just be hampered by its size

  14. DuoLingo: we're not going to cut any jobs, but we want to use AI to limit how much more hiring we have to do while still growing and addressing "bottlenecks" that used to make us hire consultants. AI panic monkeys: DuoLingo are cutting jobs!!! #AIEthics #FutureOfWork #FoW

  15. For 5 years I paid off college loans by making computers do things. Every year I used a new trendy term for my job on my tax forms. But I've always thought of myself as a programmer. Spoiler: here programmers are mere minions of devs, & may be losing out to #genAI. #giftArticle #FoW wapo.st/4iAdDSw

  16. For the five years I paid of my college loans by making computers do things for local traders, I used to entertain myself by coming up every year with a new trendy term for what I did when filling in my tax forms. But I've always thought of myself as a programmer. Spoiler: in this article programmers are mere minions of developers, and seem to be getting replaced by #genAI.

I met a Russian couple at the Dec 2022 @20percentberlin
party, who'd fled the war through Uzbekistan. As I (& a Bulgarian couple) struggled to understand, they said "Watch the BBC Trauma Zone. Then you'll know Russia." The 2nd episode includes an attempt to digitise "the plan" of the planned economy. #FoW #democracy
