  1. The System Won’t Let Me: How AI Turned Bureaucracy Into an Alibi

The most revealing sentence in modern institutional life is not, “You have been denied.” A denial still implies a denier. The more revealing sentence is, “The system won’t let me.” That sentence empties the room while everyone remains inside it. The employee is present. The institution is present. The consequence is present. Only authorship has disappeared. A machine with no legal personality has exercised practical power, while a human being with legal personality claims to possess none. You may hear the sentence after a medical authorization is refused, an account is frozen, a job application is rejected, a benefit is interrupted, or a manuscript is accused. The speaker may be genuinely sympathetic. Sympathy, however, cannot reopen the file, suspend the penalty, or restore what the system has taken. […]

  7. Milton Mueller is spot on with his commentary, echoing a tension in #AI #Policy narratives I also keep pointing out in my lectures:

"So where does that lead us? The safety paradigm asks us to slow down and control development via globalized governance. The race narrative urges American companies to stay ahead but also fosters a connection between national security and digital technology development that encourages the government to exclude foreigners from the market and even to review and license American AI development. So which is it – review and license or let her rip? All these issues came to a head in June-July 2026, when the leading AI firms and the U.S. government tried to square a circle by taking both sides."

Political debate about #DigitalTechnologies is in dire need of better differentiation and better #TechJournalism to point out logical inconsistencies and work towards better policies as the current state of unpredictable and contradictory policy actions creates unnecessary risks

  8. Just finished the fascinating John von Neumann biography "The man from the future" by Ananyo Bhattacharyya and it is a great read, tying together several breakthroughs of the 20th century and tracing the origins of ideas and technologies that keep us up at night today, like #AI

The epilogue refers to an essay by John von Neumann whose title question still resonates today: "Can we survive technology?"

A key point for me regarding today's #DigitalGovernance debates is the following paragraph (that oddly enough, is very similar to the core message of Mustafa Suleyman's book "The Coming Wave", see my review for Schweizer Monat here: schweizermonat.ch/fuer-risiken)

"For progress there is no cure. Any attempt to find automatically safe channels for the present explosive variety of progress must lead to frustration. The only

safety possible is relative, and it lies in an intelligent exercise of day-to-day judgment."

  11. "In European and other Western democracies, there is interest in using Chinese models to avoid total dependence on America. Alas, if countries fear domination by a control-obsessed superpower, they might not want to pin all their hopes on China. Strict rules require Chinese AI firms to uphold national security, social stability and “core socialist values”. Its cyber-regulators test LLMs, bots and agents for political compliance, bombarding them with tricky questions. The effects can be startling. Last year American researchers asked Miiloo, a baby-voiced, AI-enabled doll exported from China, about the status of Taiwan. The island “is an inalienable part of China”, replied the toy, and this “cannot be refuted”.

In the US IVOs are being mandated by states – independent verification organisations. No clear pathway to economic viability for IVOs, she calls for #AIAuditing to become boring.

Her final slide: Can you prove it?

In q&a she seems to be critiquing plurality in regulation, and justifies it with the google(r's, actually) moat leak, since GAFAM+ then tried to create political moats.
