  1. @ami_angelwings Yang Wenli from Legend of the Galactic Heroes. He just wants to be left alone to drink tea with brandy & study history, but keeps getting offered promotions, and keeps taking them to increase his pension… and after his side loses he is forced into the rebellion as the military governor of his planet WILL NOT believe that one of the two greatest military minds of the last hundred years would happy retire!

  2. @[email protected] In high school I would stay up late scared to sleep and passed the time by watching a lot of late night very cheesy television. Possibly my favourite of those was Witchblade, which I thought to be incredibly cool as a morphing magical armour/weapon of vast and mysterious power. C'mon, doesn't that sound cool? Very wish-fulfilment, sure, but cool!

I was disappointed when the series was cancelled, and disappointed when I later looked up the comics and saw how much the art direction favoured a very sexy-skimpy style that felt like it got in the way of the story. But I have always since then felt an attachment to the notion of the Witchblade. It's really cool!

  3. @ami_angelwings Wade Wilson. Because I think that American comics can be too cleaned up at times and especially the cinematic universe. Which is why Wade is a breath of fresh air. We know he’s a dick, we don’t take it seriously, and it’s just fun.

Can’t have all of them be like him, but one character works. Plus The Punisher is no fun anymore after yet another assclown co opt.

I still need a movie with him teaming up with the web slinger. The contrast between the two would make for amazing banter.

One of the creators has a YouTube channel as well, interesting dude.

Whirl, from the IDW Transformers More Than Meets the Eye/Lost Light series. Introduced as a Deadpool-esque sociopath, voted "Autobot most likely to defect" he's gradually revealed to be a deeply damaged person. Whirl starts the series saying "If there's one thing I've learned it's how to say goodbye and mean it" and ends it saying "I'm not broken." And meaning it.

  5. @ami_angelwings The time travel #FavCharacterW needs to be Wyatt Logan from "Timeless". (Largely because I didn't pick Lucy Preston, Rufus Carlin or Jiya Marri earlier.) Sorry, Washu Habuki. Someone had to lose out, and it wasn't Loki. #FavCharacterAtoZ

  6. As for Riker dating a "trans woman", Soren is technically a trans woman (she identifies as a woman and it's not the gender she was assigned at birth), and I know they intended the episode to be their "gay" episode and Frakes wanted Soren to be more masculine to hammer home the point, but they accidentally made a great trans episode.

And Riker was willing to throw away his career to rescue her. I know the ending is a bummer, but I also argue why it's so powerful and effective when I was a guest on Women at Warp to talk about The Outcast, and also why Riker is so good in it:

(Incidentally, the reason Troi and him broke up is he prioritized his career over her. Soren's the only woman he's been willing to give it up for).

  7. I also always liked his relationship with Deanna and I don't like that they ended up together again in the post-TNG stuff because I liked the idea that you can maintain a friendship with your ex without it deteriorating into animosity or into another romantic relationship. It was part of what really drew me to Riker, and like the maturity of TNG in general.

as to why I think Riker should have had the Enterprise, it's his "first love", the way Picard's is The Stargazer. Picard even admits as much to Scotty in "Relics", & you see in Best of Both Worlds how much Riker understands the Enterprise & its crew. I love every episode he gets to be in command, & it's his ship in "All Good Things". He turned down other commands because "it's not the Enterprise".

  8. @ami_angelwings So, #FavCharacterW is one of the easiest: Washu, from the Tenchi Muyo! series. 90% mad scientist, the other 10% split between being Ryoko's "Mom" and her *other* (secret) identity. Sometimes wise, often a wise-ass instead, rarely dull to be around.

Of all the characters in Tenchi's... retinue, let's say... she's the one I'd most like to just sit and hang out with.

  9. I picked one of the characters that gave us one of the best cliffhangers in 90s tv sci fi (John Sheridan), so now I'm picking the other for #FavCharacterW:

William T. Riker from Star Trek: The Next Generation. I know he's basically a meme now, the way Kirk is, but Riker isn't actually the himbo fratboy that people seem to think he is (also several instances of him being a "womanizer" are him being assaulted but people don't think of it that way).

Riker is intelligent, thoughtful, & open-minded, and to me he's always represented an ideal of safe and respectful masculinity.

He's clever, resourceful & beaten Picard in ship combat 3 times. I always felt like the Enterprise should have been his.

Also he's dated a trans woman & an immortal assassin, so that's also cool.

  10. @ami_angelwings #FavCharacterAtoZ #FavCharacterW William M. Buttlicker, portrayed by Jim Halpert, on The Office. He's my favorite because his family built this country. youtube.com/watch?v=1QQBB3cwNM0

Gonna go with Wall-E. Lovely little robot, forgotten, trying to follow orders, make cubes, collect tchotchkes, save their seedling and their little cockroach friend from the shoot-first-do-not-ask-questions EVE. Poor little fellow.

  12. @ami_angelwings For as long as I've been an anime fan, my #FavCharacterW has been Winry Rockbell, and frankly I don't see that changing.

Like most female characters I really love, she's extremely capable and strong willed, but that's distinctly because of her gender in a way that makes her characterization really refreshing. She's also an interesting foil for Ed and Al, because every time they see Winry again they gauge their growth against what she's been up to and vice versa, which doesn't just feel like intelligent writing, but it also mirrors what it feels like to check in with a friend you don't talk like every day.

She's also just deeply empathetic and trying to find purpose and a calling in a world with things going on much larger than her, and it's hard to not empathize with that

Wilbur Whateley, from Lovecraft's "The Dunwich Horror"

He reminds me of my family dynamic: like Wilbur, *my* little brother was the cute one who everyone paid attention to while I brooded upstairs planning to kill all humans.

Who is your favourite fictional character from any work whose first/given/personal name or name (if they only have one) begins with the letter "W"?

Please include the series/work the character is from and why they are your favourite.

Include the hashtag #FavCharacterAtoZ and #FavCharacterW to it so that we can sort the answers easily.

NOTE: you can always participate in previous letters too (A-V). Or just do the ones you want. Their hashtags are #FavCharacterA #FavCharacterB, etc
