  1. Apologies to Power Girl aka Karen Starr, who I would have loved to write about under other circumstances, but....

    My #FavCharacterK is Avatar Korra

She's divisive because she's alternately exciting and frustrating and her default is "try punching it (harder)" and her show has some definite YA tropes*

But fuck all that. Korra is my favorite Avatar. She's direct, confrontational, earnest, and loyal, none of which are guarantees from an avatar. She a fighter, attractive, funny, and not afraid to apply direct solutions even if they go awry. She's also a professional athlete in story, which I loved a short exploration of celebrity, pro sports, and fame from an ostensible spiritual leader.

KORRA IS LIKE IF YOU COULD TURN ON TV AND SEE THE POPE DUNK ON SOMEONE.

    EVERY WEEK

She struggles with Wind the way Aang struggled with Earth, and that bit of characterization via powers always makes me appreciate a media more. The soft, flexible approach is the one where struggles with.

She's my clear choice for "the fandom dislikes her but I will never not defend her" and also my clear choice for "K"

*If your two most recent Exes start dating EACH OTHER after they move on from you? We call that the "full Mako"

  2. @[email protected] I had the hardest time choosing characters for K and L. Nearly stalled out entirely. Fortunately there are a few with multiple qualifying names, so for K my favourite character is Kal-El, better known by the moniker Superman and whom I cannot choose for C or S.

I can't say I was a huge fan of his in the past. But a combination of seeing other people talk about how much he means to them over the years,
and of two years playing in a DC supervillain RP as a character who genuinely admired him (The Fabulous Faye had plans to borrow his identity, to mimic his powers with her own, and generally to fuck with Kal-El because she considered him far more worthy of emulation than the Batman she most frequently faced off against—for his part Kal-El seemed to consider her a nuisance(affectionate), tending to drop her off on her villainous allies' doorstep like a stray cat).

Anyway. Kal-El invites us to consider the question of what we would do if we were more powerful than anyone, if we could do, effectively, anything we chose to do. And maybe, just maybe, we would use that power to be good, to be kind, and to endlessly, endlessly, find something in humanity to love and to protect. And maybe we don't even need to be bulletproof, maybe we don't need to be more powerful than a locomotive or leap tall buildings in a single bound. Maybe we could be kind and do good to each other anyway.

That said, I also want to toss in an honourable mention to Korendir, of Janny Wurts' novel The Master of Whitestone. It's been a very long time since I read this novel and it has greatly faded in my memory. Nonetheless, he still pings in my mind as one of those characters with seemingly endless wells of determination and inventiveness to draw upon, who from the outside show a nigh-impenetrable mask and in their impenetrability invite you to wonder what drives him. I have a bit of a soft spot for those, and I think it's time for a reread.

    Now for #favcharacterk
    #FavCharacterAtoZ

I was tempted to go with YKK's Kokone , but no.

Kimiko Ross, the main character of Dresden Codak. Weird, brilliant, lost, and so many other things. The comic is at once a tour de force and unredeemingly self-indulgent. A train wreck of epic proportions taking place in a museum of art and science.

I love it. And Kim is the driving force. For that she gets to be my special K.

  4. For #FavCharacterK I am going with Kachiko Bayushi from Legend of the Five Rings. The Scorpion clan seductress, her husband Bayushi Shoju was killed in a failed coup attempt. The surviving son of the emperor slain in the coup, took her as his wife while disbanding her clan as punishment. Naturally she went along with this while slowly poisoning her new husband. As an unfortunate effect of the poisoning the emperor was possessed by the dark god Fu Leng in his weakened state.

Fortunately as a member of the group of heroes known as The Seven Thunders she helped kill the newly resurrected dark god.

Anyway I think she is neat

  5. My favorite character for K is Kuja, from Final Fantasy IX (9).

I love his character arc, even if I don't think it's perfectly executed. Powerful, cruel, cunning, and manipulative, he was easy to hate.

Yet, when the time came, I felt a little bit of sympathy with this particular devil.

  6. yeah okay I should get on with my #FavCharacterK so we can all move to the next letter...

my pick for favorite character that begins with K is...

    Princess Kitana from Mortal Kombat!

She's a princess! She's the adopted daughter of the evil guy but is secretly good! She's got cool murder fans! She masks, so she doesn't spread germs! She has great style even when she's almost naked! She's Asian (probably)!

She's also one of the first fighting game characters I was ever good at. So there's that too (& she's my height)!

Also in the latest movie (which is bad, don't watch it) she gets to kill her dad, and who doesn't want to do that? (stop looking at me like that)

I have to have at least one princess with an evil dad on my list and that's gonna be Kitana (sorry Leia ): )

  7. Facing a dilemma at #FavCharacterK, if I use it for Kongming then I can't do Kara Zor-El, Kitana, Kyo Kusanagi or Kyle Reese

But if I use him at L for Zhuge Liang then I can't do Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker, Lando Calrissian, Leonard McCoy, Lena Luthor, Luigi, or Lisa Simpson :/

  8. @ami_angelwings

Kiki the witch from Kiki’s delivery service. Ghibli movies. I like the story, I like her arc and I like her.

  9. @ami_angelwings #FavCharacterAtoZ #FavCharacterK Kevin Malone from The Office. His knowing nods at the camera ("I am totally going to bang Holly") crack me up. "Mini cupcakes? As in the mini version of regular cupcakes? Which is already a mini version of cake? Honestly, where does it end with you people?" youtube.com/watch?v=WN-K0mhy3Ao

  10. @ami_angelwings Oh, #FavCharacterK is a breeze:

Kiva Lagos, from John Scalzi's "Interdepenency" trilogy (starts with "The Collapsing Empire"), is the most fun, foul-mouthed, ultra-hedonistic, sharp-witted character you could ask for in a series about humanity dealing with a science-fictional empire-destroying natural calamity.

Kiva Lagos, Our Lady of F-bombs, long may she do her favorite activity (hint: the answer is an f-bomb).

    #FavCharacterK
Kurt Wagner, (pulling ahead of my dead locked other picks, Kim Possible and Kal-El) for reasons it's slightly easier to show than simply tell about. We tend to think of him purely in terms of swashbuckling, an accent, and his religion, but those're pieces of a fascinating whole. Like, here's how he enters the X side of the Marvel Universe; diving into a mob because if this is all there is then he's going down and taking some faces with him.

  12. @ami_angelwings #FavCharacterK can only be one character when you're talking time travel. (Any #TimeTravelAuthors know what I'm talking about?)

    It's Christina.
Or rather, Kurisu Makise, of Steins;Gate.

    Sorry, Kagome Higurashi. #FavCharacterAtoZ

  13. @ami_angelwings My original answer to B before deleting it and re-answering has gotta be my #FavCharacterK -- Katsuki Bakugo

It's a love motivated deeply by how much his relationship with Deku mirrors my own with my younger brother, but there's something about a character whose emotional world is so specific learning to go outside of himself little by little, but also letting people in to understand how a person in pain acts out from their own perspective.

It's actually something that reminds me a lot of my time working with kids, they have their own view on things and that's going to motivate a lot about how they interact with the world, but it's internally consistent with their perspective and it just takes some patience to get to know that part of them.

  14. I don't envy anyone picking a #FavCharacterK There are a lot, going with a character I feel I've known all my life. King Kong

    #FavCharacterAtoZ

  15. @ami_angelwings Kasumi from Otherside Picnic is my #FavCharacterK! She's a totally minor character.

According to all medical science, she's a completely ordinary little kid.

She teleports all the time. She speaks in word salad or by quoting things that other people have said, most of which she should never have heard.

She's a mysterious combination of eerie and mundane. It's great.

She may or may not turn out to be crucial to the overarching story later.

(I've been reading Otherside Picnic again lately.)

Who is your favourite fictional character from any work whose name (if they only have one) or first name begins with the letter "K"?

Please include the series/work the character is from and why they are your favourite.

Include the hashtag #FavCharacterAtoZ and #FavCharacterK to it so that we can sort the answers easily.

NOTE: you can always participate in the previous letters too, don't feel like you "missed your chance" to list your A to Js. Their hashtags are #FavCharacterA #FavCharacterB, etc
