Iskandar is the Rider servant summoned during Fate:Zero. He's larger than life and by turns jolly and fearsome. the self-styled King of Conquerors is based on Alexander the Great but his anime depiction focuses on his role as military leader and focal point of the dreams of his men. Big, boisterous, and benevolent he's got comedy moments about trying to understand the modern world alongside his deadly serious fights against other servants.
Iskandar gallantly charges forward, leading a host of soldiers called forth from his signature power, his Noble Phantasm. Iskandar is a mentor to his summoner in a way no other character in the anime is, and his summoner is one of a few to lose the grail war but escape with his life.
Iskandar is inspirational to me, but he's also a reminder that the characters i like most are seldom the focal points of the media they appear in. I don't need to be the main character either; i just need to leave lasting positive impact on the people around me
Big, brolic, friendly, earnest, kind, strong. He's an easy pick and bright spot from a show and series I otherwise dislike

My #FavCharacterI is a brawny fantasy warrior who's bigger and more macho than most of his peers, has a cool magical power, and lets me shout out an H-named character from the same series who lost their AtoZ slot to Hakumen.
Ike is my favorite Fire Emblem character, and the only real competition he has is the character who inspired him (Hector). Ike inverts a lot of the stereotypes about Fire Emblem main characters while managing to fit the trend of Blue haired sword weilders.
The difference is that is a commoner, not a prince. He is the son of a mercenary captain who fought for the enemy army before the events of the game. He is a high strength, high defense brawler instead of a high skill finesse technician. He weilds his giant sword with one or two hands in a way that recalls Guts from Berserk. In Smash bro's Ike is heavy, slow and fearsome, with some ridiculous KO potential that almost undersells how sturdy he can be in his home game.
He has a magic sword and a blood feud with a faceless Black Knight and ends up drawn into a war for the soul of the continent and the soul of a goddess.
He's not snarky or subtle, and his early missions involve re-recruiting some of his father's troops who desert their mercenary company in the wake of his father's plot relevant death after the prologue. Ike feels gritty and brawny and down to Earth in a way that few Fire Emblem characters before or since have. He along with Fox were my Smash mains for the decade+ I played that series..

@[email protected] My close second for I is Iolithae Septimian, best known from such RPGs as Nobilis by Jenna Moran. One of a number of bleak divinities known as Deceivers who have come from beyond Creation to show us that the world is false. Her particular domain is The Lies of Iolithae Septimian, from which she can cast out her falsehoods and make them true (literally, or in a manner of speaking), or else bring into her domain truths of the world and by doing so make them lies. By the most famous of her lies has she caused the seas to be salt, and among her lesser deeds spoke it so that nobody can ever truly know whether God is real or not. Of her the advice is given:
If you should meet her walking in the world bow before her for she is sacred; bring her oil and fine cloth; bow before her, three times bow; but she is Iolithae Septimian, and you must not let her speak.
I do not know how you can prevent it but you must not let her speak. #FavCharacterAtoZ, #FavCharacterI

@[email protected] I had one character in mind for I very quickly. And then I thought of another who didn't quite overtake her, so I will do a runner-up for this one too.
A close one, but my first pick and still the one is Ilia Volyova from the Revelation Space novels by Alastair Reynolds. An ultranaut, Volyova travels from world to world as one of the officers commanding the Nostalgia For Infinity while their Captain Brannigan is incapacitated by a biotech plague and ultras are known to get very weird spending so many years isolated from the rest of humanity.
Volyova herself is 'squeamish' and doesn't go in for the sorts of extreme body-mods and cybernetic implants a lot of other ultras do but she is in charge of the ship's armoury, the nastiest suite of weaponry humanity has ever devised, running a ship the size of a star destroyer with armaments that might outdo the Death Star on a crew of barely half a dozen. Fortunately she is a lot more interested in solving puzzles than in blowing up planets or making stars whimper. But that doesn't mean she isn't above kidnapping, some light brainwashing, massacring hundreds or thousands, or that she won't crack open a planet or two if the circumstances call for it. Despite all that, I like her. She's probably one of the better human beings in the story too.
I borrowed the art for this post from farareusis' Tumblr. There's also some good fanart by squidlifecrisis, but their page asks people not to repost their art so I am only linking to it here. #FavCharacterAtoZ, #FavCharacterI -

#FavCharacterI time. #FavCharacterAtoZIt took a little thought for I. Ifurita from El Hazard, my own Iris and Indigo, Inara from Firefly. All possibilities. But my first pick I had to abandon, because I got the spelling wrong! Aydah Mensah from The Murderbot Diaries does not qualify for obvious reasons, once you write it down.
So.
Everyone's favourite swordmaster. Inigo Montoya. Scarred by Count Rugen at 11, he dedicates his life to improving his swordsmanship and hunting down the Six Fingered Man (the Count). And when he finds him, he will say "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." #ThePrincessBride

For #FavCharacterI I am going with Illyasviel von Einzbern from Fate/Stay Night
Depending on the series and the timeline she either suffers a short tragic life where she is let down by the people who she loves or else she lives an extremely charmed life where she becomes a magical girl. Fate is kind of weird.

Irian, from "Dragonfly" (et seq) by Ursula K. Le Guin! #FavCharacterAtoZ #FavCharacterI

@ami_angelwings My #FavCharacterI is a super easy pick:
Iroh, Uncle to Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation, in Avatar: The Last Airbender. One of the finest mentor figures ever shown in an animated series, full stop. Knows when to chill, knows when to get serious, knows when to play the fool. Underestimate him at your peril.
"The Tales of Ba Sing Se" destroys me every time.

@ami_angelwings The time travel #FavCharacterI will be Ian Wright, from the recent Quantum Leap revival.
Granted, this is in part because I didn't pick Ben Song (or Addison Augustine) for earlier letters, but it's also a non-binary actor playing a non-binary character. Who is really cool. And Ian's time travel action effectively kicked off the plot for season one too.

I thought I would hit a brick wall when certain letters came up for #FavCharacterAtoZ like #FavCharacterI that even a thing when you value the personification of persistence Inigo Montoya

I realize I don't actually have a lot of favourite characters in I. So I'm going to go VERY niche and indie, and pick for my #FavCharacterI:
Ichiko Izumiya from the manga and film Love My Life which I HIGHLY recommend people read and watch, it's a beautiful exploration of queerness, gender, and the complexities of love, being the closet, coming out and the messiness of it all. And Ichiko is the sweet, innocent & introspective centre of it all - through her eyes as she copes with her own coming out and then the coming out of her dad (who is also gay) and finding out her late mom was also gay, meeting their partners, dealing with jealousy and longing, talking about gender identity with her girlfriend.
The Manga is more introspective than the film, but both are beautiful

@ami_angelwings #FavCharacterI
Irma Lair of W.I.T.C.H. The show adds a lot more sass via Candy Milo's performance but it works, she's meant to be the wise cracking, headstrong yet more grounded one. I always liked how she'd have fun with her powers but never really takes the high fantasy of the setting that seriously. Every genre story needs cast members who either enjoy being in the story or can playfully prod at it without puncturing it. Irma handily combines both. -
@ami_angelwings Though there are a lot of great characters to choose from, I choose Ibuki from Street Fighter 3.
She has a fun fighting style that give a player a lot of options.
I'm fairly simple, most my answers will probably be fighting game characters.

@ami_angelwings unironically, Izuku Midoriya is my #FavCharacterI
I love a shonen protagonist defined by a very fundamental sense of empathy that fights because he knows what it's like to be weak, or scared, or afraid, and he recognizes that he has been given the privilege of strength to affect that change. He's still fundamentally that same weak, scared person at his core, and his growth through that didn't have him lose touch with that part of himself that his empathy stems from.
He's a really successful deconstruction of the "power scaling" focused shine protagonist to me, he's not fighting to surpass his own strength, but because his initial lack of it gave him perspective. I think that's really powerful

@ami_angelwings I really like Iggy from #JoJosBizarreAdenture a lot.
He seems to be a very bad dog, but in the end he truly proves to be a hero!

Who is your favourite fictional character from any work whose name (if they only have one) or first name begins with the letter "I"?
Please include the series/work the character is from and why they are your favourite.
Include the hashtag #FavCharacterAtoZ and #FavCharacterI to it so that we can sort the answers easily.
NOTE: you can always participate in the previous letters too, don't feel like you "missed your chance" to list your A to Hs. Their hashtags are #FavCharacterA #FavCharacterB, etc

@ami_angelwings For #FavCharacterI in #FavCharacterAToZ I'm going with Iroh from Avatar. Such a lynchpin.
