Today my 86 year old mom was startled when the #Fema emergency alert test came over her old-fasioned flipphone. But the real problem came when it wouldn't stop.
It blared for almost half an hour while my brother (who came to the rescue) tried to figure out how to turn it off. There was no obvious power switch, the manual was lost, and the battery isn't removable (thanks #Verizon!). He finally spotted a tiny power symbol under the hang up button (on a phone primarily used by seniors). Pressing and holding it for five seconds turned it off, but my brother had to Google it to figure it out.
Maybe it would have turned off after 30 minutes as some media reports indicate, but maybe not. On the other hand, I understand many older phones couldn't receive the alert at all. It's a bit of a shit show either way. In an emergency, the #elderly may be among those most in need of information

Well, one of the phones in our household got the US national emergency alert test twice...which I'm pretty sure is not supposed to happen. I guess this is why you test.

At 2:20 PM Eastern today (October 4th), there is going to be an emergency alert system test in the #US, so if you don't want your #phone to make noise, put it on airplane mode and make sure the Wi-Fi is off or shut it down a few minutes before and wait a few minutes after to bring it back online. If you don't, it'll make a loud noise. This will also be on #TV and the #radio at the same time.

Answering my own question... on Google Pixel, there is a history of emergency alerts.

Settings > Safety and emergency > Emergency alerts > Emergency alerts history

I now have technical questions about the alert, the sound was exactly the same our phones (we have a mix of iPhones and Google Pixels). Is the sound (as in the audio file) on the phone itself? or sent with the alert/signal?

...and the message text itself was in a cancellable dialog/prompt, meaning when I pressed okay, it disappeared. Can I view that again? e.g. what is there was vital information in the message? (mental note, always screengrab in future)

Mine and my daughter's phones got the UK Gov test alert at 3pm exactly, my partner's was 5 mins later, (we're all on the same network; giffgaff/O2). Hearing about a lot of folk who didn't get it at all.
