  14. SWANSEA CITY: Swans sign Salzburg winger Yeo in second summer swoop

The Swans have completed the signing of Red Bull Salzburg winger Moussa Yeo, the club’s second addition of the summer window.

The 22-year-old has agreed a four-year contract at the Swansea.com Stadium, with the option of a further 12 months, for an undisclosed fee.

Yeo follows defender Stephen Welsh through the door, after the Swans landed the centre-back from Celtic earlier in the window.

The Mali-born forward links back up with Swansea head coach Vitor Matos, who worked with him during a spell as assistant boss at Salzburg in 2024.

Yeo said that time together had helped him progress, developing his game both as a striker and out wide, and predicted things would be “even better” in Wales.

Matos said the winger would bring “creativity, energy and versatility”, describing him as a player with good game understanding who can fill more than one role.

The head coach said Yeo had already been exposed to a high level of football and backed him to adapt to the physicality and intensity of the Championship.

Yeo joined Salzburg in 2022 and spent time on loan at feeder club FC Liefering before making his Austrian Bundesliga debut in May 2024.

He scored six goals in 32 appearances during his first full season in the first team in 2024-25.

Last season he featured 30 times across all competitions, including in the Champions League and Europa League.

One of his two goals came in a 3-2 Europa League defeat to eventual winners Aston Villa in January.

Yeo said playing in Europe’s top competitions, against sides such as Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen, had been among the biggest moments of his career so far.

His arrival is aimed at bolstering Matos’ options on the flanks, following the departures of loan players Manuel Benson and Gustavo Nunes.

Yeo joins the likes of Ronald, Eom Jisung and Zeidane Inoussa as frontline options, with Cameron Congreve and Florian Bianchini also back from loan spells.

The signing comes as the Swans confirmed the departure of Northern Ireland midfielder Ethan Galbraith to Stoke City for what the club called a “significant” fee.

Matos said Yeo would help the Swans “take a next step” in an area of the pitch they had been keen to strengthen.

  16. SWANSEA CITY: Supercomputer predicts where Swans will finish in 2026/27 — and it’s above Cardiff

Swansea City are set for a season of mid-table safety in 2026/27 — but at least they’ll finish above Cardiff City, according to a pre-season “supercomputer.”

The model, put together by betting firm Parimatch UK Sportsbook, has simulated the entire new Championship season before a ball has even been kicked.

It puts Swansea 11th out of 24, on 64 points — 17 wins, 13 draws and 16 defeats, with a goal difference of just plus-one.

That would leave the Swans six points adrift of the play-off places, but a long way clear of any relegation worries.

For derby bragging rights, though, it makes happier reading. The model has Cardiff City down in 18th on 52 points — seven places and 12 points below Swansea.

There’s a Welsh feel-good story at the top end too. The model tips Wrexham to finish sixth and then win the play-offs, completing a fourth promotion in five seasons for Hollywood owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

At the very top, it backs relegated West Ham United to win the title and bounce straight back to the Premier League, with Wolverhampton Wanderers taking the second automatic spot.

Southampton are tipped to miss out on automatic promotion in third, with Burnley, Middlesbrough, Wrexham, Millwall and Sheffield United filling the eight-team play-offs.

At the bottom, the model predicts a grim campaign for Lincoln City, who are forecast to finish dead last. Charlton Athletic and Blackburn Rovers are tipped to join them in dropping to League One.

So how does it all work? The model is a probability calculator rather than a crystal ball, and its makers stress it carries no human bias.

It rates every team on factors including player quality, manager quality, recent form and betting-market movements, then predicts a score for every single fixture.

It runs the whole season 10,000 times over, adding a dash of randomness so that upsets still happen, and averages out the results into one final table.

The makers are clear it’s a bit of fun and a snapshot of the odds as they stand — not a forecast set in stone. Plenty can change before the season kicks off, let alone over 46 games.

Here’s how the supercomputer thinks the full table will look come May:

  20. CHAMPIONSHIP: Clubs scrap financial loss rules — replacing them with a new system that could reshape how Swansea City and rivals spend

Championship clubs have voted to adopt new Squad Cost Rules (SCR) from next season, scrapping the Profit and Sustainability Rules that had governed spending in the second tier of English football.

The old rules — known as PSR — limited Championship clubs to losses of £39m across a rolling three-year period. The new system works differently: instead of measuring profit and loss, it measures what proportion of a club’s total football income is spent on the squad.

Under SCR, clubs will be permitted to spend up to 85% of their income on player and manager-related costs, including transfer fees. The higher a club’s income, the more it can spend — meaning clubs with larger stadiums, bigger attendances and more lucrative sponsorship deals will have more headroom than smaller ones.

Sixteen of the 24 Championship clubs needed to vote in favour for the rule change to pass.

The vote comes after a torrid set of financial results across the division. Of the 22 clubs that have submitted their accounts for 2024-25, the combined losses total £317m — underlining why so many clubs backed a framework they hope will give them more clarity and flexibility.

Only three Championship clubs recorded a profit in 2024-25. One of those, Stoke City, only did so because a £90m loan was written off by new owner John Coates — without that, Stoke would have posted a £29m loss.

Swansea City’s own accounts showed a £21.6m loss for 2024-25, with the ownership group pumping in £21m to keep the club afloat. The Swans’ backers include hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg, who has outlined an ambitious ten-year plan to turn the club into a global name, and Martha Stewart, who joined as co-owner in December 2024.

Under the new rules, owners will be permitted to inject additional funds through an equity top-up allowance of £33m over a three-year period, with no more than £15m usable in any single season — giving ambitious ownership groups a defined mechanism to spend beyond what income alone would allow.

The English Football League said the new framework would allow real-time monitoring of clubs’ finances during the season, rather than reviewing accounts after the fact — giving both clubs and regulators earlier visibility of any problems.

The change broadly mirrors what the Premier League approved for its own clubs in November, bringing the two divisions into closer alignment on how financial rules are structured.

The new rules will also include safeguards around commercial deals involving owners or associated parties — an attempt to prevent clubs from artificially inflating their income through related-party transactions.

SCR benefits clubs with bigger stadiums and more lucrative commercial arrangements, as their higher income base creates a larger budget to spend on players. For Swansea City, growing commercial revenue — including through the club’s celebrity ownership profile — could therefore translate directly into greater spending power on the pitch.

In League One, clubs will now be limited to spending 50% of their turnover on wages — down from 60% previously — under modifications to the Salary Cost Management Protocol.

Clubs relegated from the Championship into League One will be given some breathing room, permitted to spend 65% of turnover on wages in their first season down — reduced from the previous allowance of 75%.

League Two clubs were also asked to vote on adopting the same revised wage calculation, but the proposal did not gain enough support to pass.

  29. ‘Red boot’ race heats up as top EFL goalscorers close in on season finale

This season Sky Bet and the BHF kicked off the second year of their lifesaving Every Minute Matters campaign with the launch of the ‘Red Boot’ – a new award unveiled by footballing heroes Jermain Defoe and Bobby Zamora for the best striker across all three divisions of the EFL.

Leading the standings is Leyton Orient’s Dominic Ballard at 22 goals, with Swindon Town’s Aaron Drinan and Swansea City’s Zan Vipotnik hot on his heels with 21 goals each.

If the season ended today, Ballard’s tally would generate a whopping £1,100,000 for the British Heart Foundation, funding vital CPR training, the installation of defibrillators into communities across the UK, and helping power CureHeart, the charity’s pioneering research programme developing treatments and seeking cures for inherited heart muscle diseases.

As part of the Every Minute Matters campaign, Sky Bet and the British Heart Foundation set out to create an army of lifesavers by the end of this season’s final whistle. The transformative campaign has smashed its target and successfully inspiring over 500,000 to start to learn the lifesaving skill of CPR through RevivR – the BHF’s free, online CPR training tool.

While the EFL’s legendary Golden Boot accolade is given to each of the top scorers in the Championship, League One, and League Two, its bright red counterpart will go to the footballer who achieves the highest ultimate tally.

The ‘Red Boot’ last season would have gone to League Two Bromley’s Michael Cheek – who netted 25 goals for the Ravens – which would have equated to £1.25 million in critical funding for the BHF.

With just a handful of games remaining, the Red Boot trophy remains firmly up for grabs.

    A lifesaving title race

There are more than 40,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in the UK each year, and tragically, fewer than one in ten people survive. ‘Early CPR and defibrillation can more than double someone’s chance of survival.

Since its launch at Wembley in May 2024, Every Minute Matters has gone on to deliver an impact far greater than a stadium-sized crowd. Originally set out to teach 270,000 people how to perform CPR using the BHF’s free CPR training tool, RevivR, the campaign smashed that target in its first season eventually inspiring over 300,000 fans to start learning CPR by May 2025.

Building on that momentum, year two raised the bar with an  r ambition to reach 500,000 people and the introduction of the Red Boot — turning goals on the pitch into lifesaving impact off it.

Lizzie Moscardini, RevivR programme manager, at the British Heart Foundation said:

“When it comes to cardiac arrest, every minute really does matter – and this season’s Red Boot race shows the powerful role football can play in helping to save lives.

“Thanks to Sky Bet and the EFL, every goal scored is helping fund initiatives that can make a real difference.

“More than 40,000 people suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the UK each year, yet fewer than one in ten people survive. The Every Minute Matters campaign is helping change that by encouraging more people to learn these lifesaving skills. With the season heading into its final weeks, anyone can get involved by learning CPR in just 15 minutes using RevivR”.

    A Game-Changing Campaign

In Heart Month in February, dozens of famous faces including Frank Lampard, Micah Richards, Graeme Souness, Glenn Hoddle, Dion Dublin, Troy Deeney, Elis James, Sir Tony Robinson threw their weight behind the campaign and joined cardiac arrest survivor and Bristol Rovers player Tom Lockyer, asking fans to SHOW YOUR HEART and learn CPR.

Fans also witnessed a month of action in February across the Sky Bet EFL, with all 72 clubs united behind the Every Minute Matters campaign.

Across the weekend of 5-9 February, football paused to make a point, with all 36 weekend games in the Sky Bet EFL Championship, League One and League Two re-scheduled by one minute in a stark reminder that when it comes to cardiac arrests, every minute really does matter. Each minute that passes without CPR and defibrillation reduces the chance of survival by up to 10 per cent.

Across February Sky Bet also donated £1,000 to the BHF for every goal scored across the EFL in February – with a huge £514,000 raised for the charity, with 164 goals scored in the Championship, 198 in League One and 152 in League Two.

Fans can show their support and learn CPR in just 15-minutes: Search BHF RevivR and / or visit revivr.bhf.org.uk
