SWANSEA CITY: Play-offs should be the target for Vitor Matos next season, says Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman
Swansea City’s top-half Championship finish was a more than acceptable outcome for Vitor Matos’s first full season in charge — but the play-offs should be the target next time around, according to Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman.
Goodman, speaking to Parimatch Casino, said Matos had done a commendable job in guiding the Swans to 11th place, particularly given the circumstances in which he took over.
“When Vitor Matos took over, survival was the primary goal,” Goodman said. “He guided them to an 11th-place finish. A top-half finish is very acceptable, especially considering he took over a side that was fifth from bottom and had only won four of their first 16 games. He has clearly improved them.”
Matos was confirmed as Swansea’s head coach having initially come in to steady a struggling side, and the Portuguese coach gradually put his stamp on the team with an ambitious approach to recruitment and an attacking style of play.
The transformation under Matos has taken place against a backdrop of significant change at the club. Rapper Snoop Dogg joined as a minority investor with an ambitious ten-year vision for the club, followed by American lifestyle entrepreneur and billionaire Martha Stewart, who became a co-owner after attending a match at the Swansea.com Stadium.
Off the pitch, the club is also pressing ahead with ambitious plans for a major new fan zone for more than 1,700 supporters at the Swansea.com Stadium, featuring self-pour beer taps, a big screen and a bierkeller-style atmosphere — part of the ownership group’s broader vision for the club.
However, Goodman identified clear areas for improvement heading into next season, pointing to the Swans’ record against the division’s top sides as evidence of the gap that still needs to be bridged.
“In 12 matches against the top six, they did not win a single game,” he said. “They lost eight and drew four. They also failed to win an away game against any team that finished in the top 14. Those are the obvious areas for improvement.”
The pundit said he was encouraged by the club’s ambition in the transfer market last summer and expected a similar approach this window.
“Given the ambitious recruitment we saw last season, I expect them to show similar intent this summer,” he said. “I like Vitor Matos and the style he has imparted on the team.”
With the EFL play-offs now extended to eight teams, Goodman said there was every reason for Swansea to set their sights on a top-eight finish as a minimum ambition.
“With the play-offs extending down to eighth place, I imagine that will be their target next season,” he said. “This is exactly why the play-offs have been extended to eight teams. With five games of this season to go, most teams in the league, with the exception of perhaps four or five, would have had a chance. The excitement would have been off the charts. Swansea are a team that fell into that bracket.”

‘Red boot’ race heats up as top EFL goalscorers close in on season finale
This season Sky Bet and the BHF kicked off the second year of their lifesaving Every Minute Matters campaign with the launch of the ‘Red Boot’ – a new award unveiled by footballing heroes Jermain Defoe and Bobby Zamora for the best striker across all three divisions of the EFL.
Leading the standings is Leyton Orient’s Dominic Ballard at 22 goals, with Swindon Town’s Aaron Drinan and Swansea City’s Zan Vipotnik hot on his heels with 21 goals each.
If the season ended today, Ballard’s tally would generate a whopping £1,100,000 for the British Heart Foundation, funding vital CPR training, the installation of defibrillators into communities across the UK, and helping power CureHeart, the charity’s pioneering research programme developing treatments and seeking cures for inherited heart muscle diseases.
As part of the Every Minute Matters campaign, Sky Bet and the British Heart Foundation set out to create an army of lifesavers by the end of this season’s final whistle. The transformative campaign has smashed its target and successfully inspiring over 500,000 to start to learn the lifesaving skill of CPR through RevivR – the BHF’s free, online CPR training tool.
While the EFL’s legendary Golden Boot accolade is given to each of the top scorers in the Championship, League One, and League Two, its bright red counterpart will go to the footballer who achieves the highest ultimate tally.
The ‘Red Boot’ last season would have gone to League Two Bromley’s Michael Cheek – who netted 25 goals for the Ravens – which would have equated to £1.25 million in critical funding for the BHF.
With just a handful of games remaining, the Red Boot trophy remains firmly up for grabs.
A lifesaving title race
There are more than 40,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in the UK each year, and tragically, fewer than one in ten people survive. ‘Early CPR and defibrillation can more than double someone’s chance of survival.
Since its launch at Wembley in May 2024, Every Minute Matters has gone on to deliver an impact far greater than a stadium-sized crowd. Originally set out to teach 270,000 people how to perform CPR using the BHF’s free CPR training tool, RevivR, the campaign smashed that target in its first season eventually inspiring over 300,000 fans to start learning CPR by May 2025.
Building on that momentum, year two raised the bar with an r ambition to reach 500,000 people and the introduction of the Red Boot — turning goals on the pitch into lifesaving impact off it.
Lizzie Moscardini, RevivR programme manager, at the British Heart Foundation said:
“When it comes to cardiac arrest, every minute really does matter – and this season’s Red Boot race shows the powerful role football can play in helping to save lives.
“Thanks to Sky Bet and the EFL, every goal scored is helping fund initiatives that can make a real difference.
“More than 40,000 people suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the UK each year, yet fewer than one in ten people survive. The Every Minute Matters campaign is helping change that by encouraging more people to learn these lifesaving skills. With the season heading into its final weeks, anyone can get involved by learning CPR in just 15 minutes using RevivR”.
A Game-Changing Campaign
In Heart Month in February, dozens of famous faces including Frank Lampard, Micah Richards, Graeme Souness, Glenn Hoddle, Dion Dublin, Troy Deeney, Elis James, Sir Tony Robinson threw their weight behind the campaign and joined cardiac arrest survivor and Bristol Rovers player Tom Lockyer, asking fans to SHOW YOUR HEART and learn CPR.
Fans also witnessed a month of action in February across the Sky Bet EFL, with all 72 clubs united behind the Every Minute Matters campaign.
Across the weekend of 5-9 February, football paused to make a point, with all 36 weekend games in the Sky Bet EFL Championship, League One and League Two re-scheduled by one minute in a stark reminder that when it comes to cardiac arrests, every minute really does matter. Each minute that passes without CPR and defibrillation reduces the chance of survival by up to 10 per cent.
Across February Sky Bet also donated £1,000 to the BHF for every goal scored across the EFL in February – with a huge £514,000 raised for the charity, with 164 goals scored in the Championship, 198 in League One and 152 in League Two.
Fans can show their support and learn CPR in just 15-minutes: Search BHF RevivR and / or visit revivr.bhf.org.uk

SWANSEA: City rallies for ‘our Kev’ as fundraiser launched after stroke
Jessica Rice, a close family friend, has set up the fundraiser to help ease financial pressures on Kev and his wife Rosie as he begins his recovery — with more than £2,200 already raised.
Known affectionately as “our Kev”, the much-loved entertainer has been a fixture of Swansea life for decades — from the panto stage at the Grand Theatre to the airwaves and the Swansea City stadium.
Now, the man who has spent a lifetime lifting others is being backed by the community he has given so much to.
In a heartfelt message on the fundraiser page, supporters said: “Kevin Johns MBE has been the heart of Swansea for decades… always showing up, always supporting others, and never asking for anything in return.
“Now, Kev needs us.”
Kev suffered a stroke and now faces a period of recovery where he is unable to work — coming after what friends describe as an already difficult few years.
Throughout it all, his wife Rosie has remained by his side “day and night”, with the fundraiser describing her support as the “true meaning of marriage”.
The page adds: “This fundraiser is our chance to give back to someone who has spent his life giving to others.
“We want Kev back doing what Kev does best — and he absolutely will be — but he needs the space and freedom to heal properly first.”
The appeal has struck a chord with many across Swansea, where Kev’s voice and personality have become part of the city’s identity.
Swansea Bay News previously reported that Kev was recovering after a minor stroke, and has also highlighted his incredible career — including more than 30 years as Swansea’s iconic panto dame and being awarded the Freedom of the City.
Supporters say this latest appeal is a chance for Swansea to “come together for Kev — just as he has always come together for us”.
Donations, big or small, are being welcomed to help Kev and Rosie focus fully on his recovery and return to the stage, the mic and the city he loves.

This is not only affecting my car, it's affecting health too. The constant jarring as you hit another pothole is causing me neck problems. I've given up reporting these roads as nothing ever happens. You have vehicles out and about every day. It's not hard for these to keep you informed. Can you please just get out there and do what your supposed to.

Nice to see Swansea Council spending money on dropping the speed limit on Clasemont Road and installing some really nice big traffic calming measures. Wouldn't it be nice if they could spend sometime bringing the other crumbling roads in the area up to scratch. I had the misfortune of travelling on Oystermouth Road the other, it's in a shocking state.
