  1. CW: Impact of ED from long ago

A chance comment from my new pain psychologist got me to thinking. When I was roughly between 16 and 20, I had the serious form of anorexia nervosa. Ever since then, I think I messed up my metabolism permanently, leading to my body shape the way it is now.

Also, I never completely processed the eating disorder back then; just pushed through it. I'm pretty sure there is residue there, from close to half a century ago.

Anyway, I reached out to the regional center, and will be doing an intake tomorrow morning to see if they can help me. I had asked my new dietician, but she currently does not cover conditions like this.

Fingers crossed for some new awakenings and healings!

  5. Shame – part 2

A week ago, I shared a post on dealing with shame. That shame was connected to having a clean home, keeping a clean house. This second shame post will be about dealing with my health, specifically: my relationship with food. I know how to properly make a few meals, I know I need to cook better meals, especially if I want to lose some of my obesity, and start to feel (and look) a bit better. I have done it before... So, I hope that I can do it again... But, to be able to buy healthier food, to prepare healthier food, to not crave the "easy food", I know I need more spoons... […]

  6. CW: Discussion about feelings around ED, food, keto, dieting, no real details

[comfort, support, solidarity, understanding would be welcome—advice not]

I'm having such a hard time.

A person in the house does keto to an incredibly disordered extent, obsessively counting calories for an extremely restricted intake.

I have a long history of a contentious relationship with food, stemming mostly from my mother decrying how fat I was as a child (I wasn't), and that we rarely actually had any food in the house (literally).

I'm finding it SO triggering to be around this person because pretty much the only thing they talk about is their diet.

My therapist and I spoke about it before I left. We have plans to start up EMDR therapy when I get back in March, to counter the trauma I hold around food... which is great, but also it's a long time until March.

  8. I have founded a group for abuse survivors (of past or present abuse) and those who question whether they were or are experiencing or witnessing abuse or coercive control or undue influence or someone is using power over them and retaliating against them when they don't "behave".

I myself survived childhood sexual abuse, incest, abuse by a cult, my therapist, psychiatry nurses, sibling, friends, queerplatonic partner/girlfriend, roommate and harrassment from a nazi neighbor plus landlords. I kinda got a bad start to life (in germany) and then people tended to make it worse instead of helping me or they took advantage of me.

So I learned a lot about what does and doesn't help!

And I want to help you out, whether you went through something you fear no one will believe or be able to stomach hearing about, or you think it was probably nothing and you overreact. You don't overreact! Nothing is too small to be worth talking about.

I'm making a space to have a warm, supportive, good vibes atmosphere that we co-create together. We'll help each other grow and see through confusions and distortions of the truth and gain more agency, to make choices, decisions and do stuff and have an impact on the world.

We'll also have fun and laugh and cry and eat cookies and discover what it's like to argue with someone who doesn't slice you to ribbons emotionally.

Anyone is welcome regardless of age, gender, ability, neurotype, location or background. I just ask that you help make the group a good space, be that by complaining when everyone else is too polite to say anything or by listening or by sharing. Please don't worry that by joining you'll take up too much space or take resources away from someone who might need them more — you ARE our space and our resources!

The first step is, once we have at least a handful of people, to decide when and how often to meet.

  15. CW: mh, eating disorder recovery, lies that enabled the disorder (that are part of activist scenes even for non-disordered eaters!)

    lies like

    "Self-restraint is a virtue/ indulgence is bad"

    "less is more"

"if it doesn't hurt, it can't be effective"

"it is virtuous and morally good and important and effective to make personal sacrifices"

"this isn't a sacrifice, you LIKE it!" (when I don't allow myself to consider the alternative)

"this is extreme, but extreme is good because it is radical, it goes to the roots of the problem!" (ok, sometimes true, but not everything that's extreme is automatically effective or even radical!)

"this flies in the face of conventional wisdom because I am actually more informed than most people" (again, sometimes true but not automatically true)

"the problem isn't that this is too hard, it's that I'm stupid/not trying enough/ etc"

"you always have to try harder. just like. in general."

"pushing yourself is morally good and leads to growth rather than burnout"

"you don't deserve to have your needs and desires met"

    "this isn't a need, it's a want, it's selfish"

"others have it worse so quit complaining"

    "resting is wasting time"

"having fun is selfish when others are suffering"

"there is so much to do, no time for rest/fun!"

...and so on. Until you genuinely can't tell what you want and need. Because society and especially abusers (insofar as there's a difference) beat that ability out of us starting in infancy.

And these beliefs are so common in activist scenes and spaces and are what motivates many people to do activism. It's not "just" the stuff eating disorders are made out of, it's also the water most people swim in in general. Obviously you get versions of these beliefs in religions and conservative circles too....

There's nothing more radical than listening to your body's needs and allowing them unconditionally. Fuck the concepts of laziness, greed and undeservedness!

  32. 👋 i’m a 28yo disabled queerean woman trying to crowdfund for my survival fund bc of increases in essential bills, decreases in benefits (😪), & bc in the midst of all this i still can’t work in my current state of health.

you see 7yrs ago i had 2 near-fatal attempts, a month apart, that resulted in a 3-day coma, 2 traumatic involuntary stays & 6mo later i was sexually assaulted. all of which resulted in ptsd which combined w/my chronic pain, adhd, eating disorder, & severe treatment-resistant depression made going to my undergrad classes nearly impossible. i ended up going from a scholarship-winning, 4.0 gpa student to a student who was academically dismissed bc she couldn’t even leave her apt or read a few pages of schoolwork. luckily with some hard work on treatment & explaining my circumstances with my college, i was able to reenroll for the fall semester right before the pandemic started 💀 anyways, that & issues w/medicaid that caused major setbacks in treatment & recovery progress.

since then, i’ve been trying real hard to get my health/wellbeing back to a state where i am recovered, manage my chronic health issues & can study again to pursue my degrees.

PLS donate &/or boost to help me raise $$$ for my survival fund ♡ no amount is too small & i wouldn’t be begging like this if i didn’t need to 😔
