“'But even more worrisome is his infusion of his Christian beliefs as the basis for our war in Iran,' Beirich added. 'Our national security should not be based on fanatical holy war fantasies, but that is what Hegseth, and by extension Trump, have wrought.'”

"At key moments in his cabinet tenure, Hegseth has given CREC pastors a platform in services that have put Christian nationalism at the centre of the US military. ...
Heidi Beirich, co-founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism, said: 'Hegseth has aligned himself with some of the most extreme Christian nationalists in the country.'"

"It didn’t hedge. It didn’t dance. It didn’t translate hard truths into palatable euphemisms. It simply said: this is what this is.
And in doing so, it exposed how much of modern political discourse depends on not saying the obvious."

"Don’t say white supremacy—say racial tension.
Don’t say Christian nationalism—say religious conservatism.
Don’t say propaganda—say messaging. But language shapes reality. And when you refuse to name something directly, you don’t neutralize it—you protect it.
What made this moment resonate is that it broke that pattern."

Danielle Moodie writes about why Wajahat Ali's videotaped confrontation of Hegseth's religious mentor Douglas Wilson struck such a nerve and caused the video to go viral:
"For years, there has been a quiet agreement in mainstream discourse: soften the language, blur the edges, avoid offending the 'center.' Call things adjacent to what they are—but never exactly what they are."

"As a person who is a practicing Muslim and went to a Jesuit Catholic High school, I also think it’s because many Democrats and progressives have ceded religion to the right-wing, which has used and abused the Bible, religious values, and prophets to advance white supremacy, greed, and misogyny."

"I have no problem attacking you, a man who is the religious leader of Pete Hegseth, a man who’s a cosplay crusader who’s leading some type of crusade—probably you put him on as Secretary of Defense—getting Americans and innocent civilians killed. I wish you would be a better Christian.”

I have no problem attacking a man who proudly says he wants to do away with the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. The meanness, cruelty, exclusion, scapegoating, and outright hatred of people solely for being who God makes them to be: this has increasingly proven to be a bridge too far for many Christians.
So why are so many post-evangelical churches now flourishing? Gushee says, among other factors:
"They have resolved the LGBTQ+ inclusion issue in the affirmative, it is not a matter of debate."

--<--

In that interview, Wilson stated that America was founded to be a Christian nation, a special place for evangelical Christians, who are meant to run things in this special nation.
He states that the America he is working to build would be one that outlaws Catholic processions, because they are "a public display of idolatry."

The church to which Hegseth belongs is part of the Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches. Hegseth has invited Douglas Wilson, co-founder of this Communion, to preach at the Pentagon.
Wilson sat down for an interview a month ago with John Papola.

"Wilson's remarks at the Pentagon assured the audience that their battles were God’s battles, that God would be their protector just as he was for figures from scripture like Noah and David. He suggested that God’s people, having searched for the enemy, now realize they are surrounded—the implication presumably being that the real enemy is other Americans."

"For them, a Christian nation would be governed directly by biblical law, and in every area of of its common life and culture it would be shaped by a comprehensive 'biblical world and life view.'
