  1. One One Two

    Allergens menu

This stylish wine bar in Nairn is serving up a creative small-plates menu inspired by South East Asian and Middle Eastern flavours.

They recommend two or three plates per person and these come when they are ready, so works best if you are dining with folk you can share with.

Plates are dainty, flavourful and interesting. The menu updates regularly, but you’ll see similar dishes to those pictured below. Our favourites were the crispy Peking aubergine, a delicious chickpea and vegetable kofta served with dal (apologies, I ate it too fast to take a photo!), and bonus points for a proper vegan dessert with sticky toffee pudding.

As it is a wine bar, they offer a great choice of wines and their wine flights are a fun way to sample a selection.

You do need to check the allergens menu on their website to see vegan items, which is a little laborious. But it is good to see they’ve taken the trouble to produce a proper allergen menu, and gave me confidence in knowing which dishes were vegan. If you did visit without checking options, the staff were genuinely helpful, positive and informed. When we visited the chef adapted a vegetarian dish, making up a sauce for us so it could be vegan.

One One Two is unsurprisingly popular, so booking well in advance recommended.

  5. Dave’s Pop-up Vegan Cafe

    📄 Example menu

This summer you can explore bonny Knoydart on the West Coast and not compromise on vegan treats with a fab vegan Saturday pop-up.

Dave’s changing menu features healthy packed Buddha bowls with falafel, bhajis or tempeh, cooked breakfast with homemade baked beans, cherry tomatoes, tempeh and sausages, sun-dried tomato flan and more. All the dishes are made from scratch and the salad is even grown locally and freshly harvested. Sweet treats include epic fruity cheesecakes, decadent biscoff brownies and cherry Bakewell tarts.

Note, the pop-up is only open on Saturdays, running until the end of September. If the sun is shining, take your meal out on the deck overlooking Loch Nevis. I’ve not visited yet, but I am planning my trip now!

  6. Dave’s Pop-up Vegan Cafe

    📄 Example menu

This summer you can explore bonny Knoydart on the West Coast and not compromise on vegan treats with a fab vegan Saturday pop-up.

We’ve still not made it out west to visit Dave’s cafe, so we’re excited to welcome a guest review courtesy of Jenny and Holly who hiked to Knoydart last week.

Dave’s Pop Up Vegan Cafe does exactly that – pops up every Saturday over the summer in the space that is the Knoydart Pottery and Tea Rooms during the week, but the situation and food go beyond doing what it says on the tin name. The simple and short breakfast and lunch menu is slightly different each week with freshly cooked and lovingly prepared meals, and Dave manages to be a welcoming and helpful host while running the kitchen.

You will struggle to beat the view from Inverie in Knoydart and there’s not many cafes, especially not vegan cafes, where the adventure by boat or foot are part of the experience and Dave’s considerate enterprise fits in well with the eco-friendly, community ethos of the remote peninsula. Dave aims to please and is still excited to tell you about the food and cakes he makes and sells. As well as being entirely vegan, gluten free is happily catered for.

We visited for breakfast are enjoyed overnight oats, full vegetarian breakfasts and homemade baked beans on toast (gluten-free bread was happily available), but are looking for a reason to return for lunch and cakes, where the Buddha bowls topped with falafel or onion bhajis and homemade mango cheesecake, millionaire’s shortcake or croissants were just some of the goodies tempting another visit.

  9. Run by husband-and-wife team Hemant and Pooja, Namaste’s authentic Indian menu features freshly-made, excellent value vegan options. Located in the Victorian Market Food Hall, don’t miss them tucked behind the Bad Girls Bakery.

Hemant is a skilled chef, making dishes from scratch and offering options I’ve not seen in local restaurants. We tried puffed crispy bitesize pani puri filled with a potato, chickpea mix, followed by tangy tomato-based pav bhaji vegetable curry (which comes with butter, simply ask for vegan butter), as well as amritsari chole bhature, which is a delicious spiced-chickpea dish served with fabulous puffed bhature fermented breads. On a return visit we also sampled idli sambhar – a flavoursome lentil stew with fluffy rice idlis, and hearty bread pakora (slices of bread with a spiced potato filling, deep-fried) which should be popular in the country that is home to all manner of deep-fried indulgence! And I’m always happy to find a new vegan sweet treat, so enjoyed finishing with their crunchy jalebi (which is now vegan).

I especially appreciate how friendly, enthusiastic and accommodating Hemant and Pooja are. Vegan options are mostly marked on the menu, but Hemant did make a couple of items vegan after this was printed. If you are not sure of anything they are so helpful at answering queries. As Hemant is cooking everything, he knows exactly what the ingredients are and what can be adapted.

You can order and sit in the Victorian Market food hall, but I recommend grabbing a perch at Namaste’s small bar seating area. You can watch your food being prepared and chat to Hemant while you wait.

Writing this up is making me hungry for a return visit!

  15. 📄 Online menus

The pub food is a cut above in this relaxed bar/restaurant, including one of the best veggie burgers I’ve had locally, an epic vegan Sunday roast and a proper vegan dessert.

The menu features some more imaginative dishes, all properly cooked from scratch. I’m a big fan of a vegetable burger and their beetroot, mushroom and quinoa one is excellent and comes piled with onion rings (whilst not marked vegan on their menu it can be easily made vegan). Other options include a sweet potato and carrot rosti which comes served over a pile of delicious ratatouille.

I was particularly keen to check out their date and nut vegan Sunday roast. It is pine nut packed, sweet, crunchy and delish and with all the accompaniments it is a serious plateful. They also currently have a festive menu featuring a squash, chestnut and sage roast, it’s good, but for me the nut roast wins with its crunchy texture.

For dessert you can have warm vegan waffles with fruit, sorbet and coulis, plus on the festive menu vegan Christmas pudding served with brandy sauce.

I felt they are making a real effort to deliver tasty options for vegans. The menu is clearly marked and staff are all helpful if you have any queries. I’ll definitely be back!
