  1. Fuck, I'm struggling against some form of Demand Avoidance with my classwork this week, especially for my English Lit class.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can punch through this so I can Get Things Done rather than distract myself with Stardew Valley?

  2. #Pathological #Demand #Avoidance (PDA) Misconceptions

#Pathologicaldemandavoidance (#PDA) is most often seen in people with #autism, but certain traits also have been seen with people with #ADHD and other sensory processing #disorders. In this video I will talk about what PDA is, why it's often searched with ADHD and autism, strategies that can help those with pathological #demandavoidance, and what it's like living with PDA.

  6. I just learned what demand avoidance is and how I could help myself over come it.

Taking showers has been a fight ever since I remember. So I made a list of my hidden demands:

    Before the shower:

Finding clean underwear and towels (laundry demand related which is a whole other list)
    Brushing my hair out
    - finding a brush
    - dealing with painful tangles
(Could get a hair cut which includes various demands)

    During the shower:

water temperature needs to be good
    - waiting for the water temp to be good
    - anxiety related to wasting water while waiting
I hate getting water on my face because it goes in to my eyes when I open them
I hate showering with my eyes closed because I’m afraid I’d get hurt

    After the shower:

Temperature change when I get out
The feeling of being wet when I exit the bath/shower
Dealing with my wet hair - won’t use a hair dryer because i don’t like how that makes my hair feel dry and unmanageable
Feeling of my skin after I dry off with a towel
Feeling of moist clothing on my skin (I usually go out to the bedroom and completely dry off sitting in front of a fan before I put clothes on)
Still dealing with my wet hair

Interesting how there are so many things that were demanding my energy. No surprise there just the thought of it makes me want to not do it.

  7. Really hard getting going today, fighting through a not atypical anxiety meltdown about some recent stressors in my family, not to mention all this (waves arms at world). 🫠 Pretty sure learning about #DemandAvoidance on the Internet isn't helping. There is this test and I "passed" docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAI so starting to think I might be a bit on the #Autism spectrum. Losing interest in everything

  8. @johnnyprofane1 @cinja Agree! I can see the utility of it to get past the inertia of a writing activity. And then perhaps editing or wholesale rewriting seems “easier.”

Overall the inability for LLM to fact-check themselves is both a liability of their technology and their training material. As I tell my son, never blindly trust everything you see on the Internet. That goes for you too ChatGPT! 😁

  9. Speaking of #DemandAvoidance and #ADHD, the impending return of spouse, after nearly three years of #COVID in China, has me making my latest pass through the home for decluttering, tidying, etc. I’ve heard that #AuDHD leads to “level 1” hoarding, such as having difficulty getting rid of detritus. I believe it! Once I can get past my executive issue in initiating tasks, it’s easy! 🤣

Now if only I could avoid #burnout enough to make it easy all the time!

  10. CW: Autism at Work

1/5 I mentioned recently that I was doing my annual self-evaluation at work. Normally this triggers my #anxiety and #DemandAvoidance. And I guess the latter happened. This time I got into “fuck it” mode and just did my #narrative thing. What was new is that I injected context around AuDHD and how it expresses for me. #Burnout. Anxiety. Demand avoidance. Social awkwardness.

  11. @rekindled I recognize that #BodyDoubling happens for me, yes. I didn’t know it had a name. I’m not sure of the distinction between #DemandAvoidance snd #ExecutiveFunctioning issues. I can say that when my task issues happen I am anxious, body stiffens and heart races.

Other people trigger/exhaust me too, so I I tend to plan to avoid them whenever possible. That can contribute to my task issues.

Sone tasks have been going for years this way. #ActuallyAutistic @actuallyautistic

  12. I’ve had a really weird day emotionally. Been stuck in my head and found to difficult to move on things I knew I should. I suppose I could call it #DemandAvoidance but it feels different to me. Thst term sounds willful to me. But maybe I am being? Ugh.

I did manage to get into things where I was participating in a group. Is a key having someone there to be sure I’m on task? Seems onerous. Maybe.

    My brain seriously frustrates me.

  13. @lapingvino @doggle @IzabelaKaramia @actuallyautistic #DemandAvoidance is interesting and you'll find very different opinions on this from the Autistic Community.

I agree with the the line of thought that says there isn't a #PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance or Persistent Demand for Autonomy) subset of Autism, but that all Autistics have Demand Avoidance to differing degrees.

I think it is our overriding desire for Autonomy, which isn't pathological at all, but it does make life difficult.

  14. @doggle @autisticbookclub @IzabelaKaramia @actuallyautistic #DemandAvoidance is such a painful but also super useful realization... I think it's the only part of my autism that tends to actively create trouble for me... the bane of my existence... but also still a significant part of my identity. I still rather have a society where we don't impose things on each other.

  15. How it feels when #ExecutiveDysfunction, #DemandAvoidance and #OCD get together for a party: just that terrible stuckness of wanting to do things but feeling totally unable, and you don't even know why, just that when you try your brain says NO...

and then becoming riddled with guilt that you're not doing anything, which of course makes it even *harder* to do things, and leads to even more anxiety that you're not doing things, over and over in a cycle, until you're totally paralyzed and can't do anything you wanted, or anything else either, and the stress has pushed you into shutdown so you're dissociating and struggling to speak...

so you give up and go to sleep because being awake with all this going on is overwhelming

and your brain yells at you that you're lazy the whole way there 🫤

  16. @thekimmy I'm watching #JohnWick we're bingeing on all 3 movies; 1 down, 2 to go!

I mean, it's only been 9 years since it was released?!

When something is super popular I usually wait until it's been out for a bit until I watch it, the pressure to watch it 'straight away' is too much.

But I would've been raging too if someone had killed my dog!

  17. @thekimmy I do not like being told what to do, and advertising feels like being told what to do.

Provide me with information, give me time to examine it.
I'll do some research, then I'll make a decision.

No other way works for me.

The harder the sell, the less likely I am to buy it.

I loathe, 'You better buy it soon, they're going fast!!!!!'

Well I guess I'll just have to do without it, won't I?! 😄

  18. @vy_thefifthmookie @snazzyjazzy @actuallyautistic That sounds so restful!

For me, I need to be able to control how I'm going to socialise, dependant on how I feel (physically & emotionally) flexibility is key.

Having something 'planned' and 'scheduled' that you can't back out of, I find that really draining and stressful.

  19. So I've switched from Autofocus back to GTD for my home task management. I've got this cool new toy Obsidian, which is a kind of … personal wiki?

Don't know if it will work. I've tried this before but failed because of #autism, #DemandAvoidance, #ADHD, lack of damn time to actually do tasks, guilt, etc.

It works just fine at work for some reason.

One really tiny tweak that might help. GTD has a list called "Someday/maybe"; tasks that you should review to see if they actually need doing. »

  20. @fishidwardrobe @BlinkPopShift @actuallyautistic Thanks! But just the word ‘task’ irritates me! 😬 I feel like I just want to ‘organise myself’ even if that means the superfluous (but interesting) tasks get completed instead of the important ones!
