California's DROP becomes enforceable on 1 August: one request, every
registered data broker. It does not touch real-time bidding. Every page load broadcasts a bid
request to every DSP in the auction, winners and losers alike. Google's
own documentation puts that at 2,051 entities in the US.ICCL found purchasable segments for Pentagon staff, active military by
branch and judges.Deletion rights operate on records. This is a broadcast. There is no
holder to serve.https://privacyinsightsolutions.com/blog/real-time-bidding-data-deletion

Friday, July 24 is DROP Day at the Alameda Free Library.
Data brokers registered in the state of California will have to delete your info—if you're signed up. We'll help with the Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP) and answer any other privacy questions. If you're already signed up, please come by and help others.

CPPA Brings Enforcement Action Against National Public Data -- but not over the massive hack and data leak -- but because they failed to register with the state as a data broker under the state's Delete Act.

The good news is we are the closest we've ever been to passing the #DELETEAct or getting it added to (currently toothless on data broker opt-outs) #APRA.
Want a one-click opt-out from data brokers? Get involved by signing the petition at https://DoNotDox.com

Devastating coverage of the harms #DataBrokers cause to #abortion workers, patients, and activists—including stories from two of our staff at ❤️Fight.
We need the #DELETEAct yesterday so we can opt out of this abuse-to-profit machine. https://19thnews.org/2024/04/doxxing-personal-data-reproductive-health-care-workers/

Today the #DELETEAct received a ringing endorsement from 20 #humanrights and consumer protection orgs: https://www.fightforthefuture.org/news/2024-04-16-delete-act-endorsement-letter/

Governor Newsom signed the #DeleteAct which will build a universal optout for CA consumers (as of 2026) to remove their info from all 500 registered third party data brokers at once. The ad industry says this will cause consumers to lose the "data-supported services they love." This reminds us of the ad industry telling us we all loved watching soap commercials on TV. Not really. https://www.mediapost.com/publications/article/390057/california-governor-signs-delete-act.html?

Imagine making shadowy data brokers erase your personal info. Californians may soon live the dream.
https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/security/imagine-making-shadowy-data-brokers-erase-personal-info-californians-m-rcna105161... Both houses of the California state legislature have passed the Delete Act, which would establish a “one stop shop” where individuals could order hundreds of data brokers registered in the state to delete their personal data — and to cease acquiring and selling it in the future — with a single request...

CW: minor spoiler for "The Dish"
anyway the #deleteAct reminds me that "privacy compliance" is kind of like that. The state legislators are trying to match people's privacy norms, and if you know the privacy norms you can tell which way the laws are headed and not be surprised by the details of any particular law

The #DeleteAct has passed the California Assembly -- now listed as "In Senate. Concurrence in Assembly amendments pending."
https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billHistoryClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240SB362
(this is a win for publishers with loyal audiences, who have 1st party data but are not considered data brokers)

@dmarti Great call. I composed a letter with #Resistbot and enabled it to be a template that anyone can use. Text “SIGN PHYURG” to 50409 to support SB362!

If you're in #California, write to your assembly member -- it looks like the #DeleteAct would have a big impact on the surveillance business and help drive marketing budgets into positive-sum investments

Data brokers are launching an attack on proposed CA legislation #SB362 that would let people opt out from all #databroker services en masse. Because they know everyone will do it if they can. The #DELETEAct would be good for Californians. Tell your legislator you support it and don't let these dodgy businesses kill it. https://www.politico.com/news/2023/08/16/ad-industry-tries-to-quash-proposed-data-broker-regulations-00111513

‘#DeleteAct’ Seeks to Give Californians More Power to Block Data Tracking
"The onus is on individuals to try to protect their data from an estimated 2,000-4,000 #databrokers worldwide -- many of which have no other relationship with consumers beyond the trade in their data," reports KQED. "This lucrative trade is also known as #surveillance #advertising, or the 'ad tech' industry."
