  2. “Terrorist”: How #ICE Weaponized 9/11’s Scarlet Letter

#SpencerAckerman on how the politics of #counterterrorism led to ICE and #CBP completing their transformation into a #DeathSquad — and why the agencies are unreformable.

    The Intercept Briefing
    February 6 2026

"The word 'terrorist' wasn’t coined on September 11, 2001, but the defining event of the early 21st century ushered it in as the United States’ go-to term for demonizing outsiders and dissenters alike. The so-called “war on terror” transformed the way the U.S. wields power at home and abroad, enabling mass surveillance and a crackdown on the right to free speech. It became reflexive for the U.S. to disparage immigrants and protesters as supporters of terrorism.

"President Donald Trump has embraced this model and manipulated it for his own ends, as author Spencer Ackerman points out. The #Trump administration often peddles spurious accusations of #terrorism against the targets of its #ImmigrationRaids."

  7. Death Squads - wikipedia #DeathSquad

Although the term "death squad" was not widely used until the activities of such groups became widely known in Central and South America during the 1970s and 80s, death squads have been employed under different guises throughout history. The term was first used by the fascist Iron Guard in Romania. It officially installed Iron Guard death squads in 1936 in order to kill political enemies.[3] It was also used during the Battle of Algiers by Paul Aussaresses.[4]

  8. @DemocracyMattersALot #GoFundMe should freeze all accounts raising funds for #ICE agent #JonathanRoss until any future (likely state) charges for the murder of #ReneeGood are brought. If he is convicted, all funds should be donated to her 3 children.

If they *don’t* freeze the accounts, her family should sue GoFundMe.com for 10x the total that the company raised for the #DeathSquad killer.

Wouldn't be surprised to learn that program had a ride-along for officers from different (more repressive) countries.

  10. #Chiquita #Banana is still attempting to delay a 17 year running #CivilCase filed for paying a Colombian #DeathSquad #MilitiaGroup over a million dollars for "security". The US Govt has verified the #paramilitary group was responsible for the #massacres of hundreds of civilians as well as #kidnappings and displacing indigenous communities. In a 2007 #CriminalTrial, Chiquita plead guilty to financing a designated global #terrorist group, and agreed to pay a $25 million fine , but has since used an army of lawyers to long delay a civil case filed against it by multiple victims families.

Once known as United Fruit Co in previous decades, CIA hit squads of the 50s led to 1990s death squads, and PR pushes to make the company better known known for its #FreshExpress supermarket salad line than its human rights violations. Half owned since 2014 by a billionairess with dual Greek and Brazilian citizenship living in Switzerland, Chiquita is just one asset of the multinational Safra Banking empire.

  11. Argentines demand 1976 coup victims be remembered, pushing back on president :

"This is an attack against memory, and that's why we're here with our granddaughter, for her to understand," Mariela Bruno said from the march, 8-year-old Mia tugging on her arm in the haze of firework and barbecue smoke.

  12. I still sometimes hear well-educated people being surprised that Western corporations can pay to commit war crimes (sexual violence and killing and torturing civilians) without being sued. (Of course, non-Western corps can do that too.)

#CocaCola funded the #AUC #DeathSquad in the 1990s, according to #SalvatoreMancuso [1], speaking at the Colombian #TruthAndReconciliationCommission, the "Jurisdicción Especial para la Paz" (JEP) [2].
