Human Lost by Dazai Osamu is now up and available to read for free on Yobanashi Café.
A candid account of his time in Musashino Hospital, it was the first time Dazai used the term 'no longer human' and includes words scribbled on the walls of his cell.

#Dazai scrawled much of his original diary entries which later became 'Human Lost' on whatever he could find (including walls, medical reports, and a Bible). That same Bible was only found recently and put on display in a museum, and it has *more* poems in it than in Human Lost...
...Which I have translated and added in a footnote. Does this mean I can say I have included long lost, only recently rediscovered, never-before-seen material? 🤔

This is going to sound silly but, after translating a lot of the correspondence between #Dazai and Haruo Sato in date order I reached the final 'letter' I had planned: Sato's eulogy for Dazai. And for a moment, I forgot he was dead, and had to take a breath.
Up until that point I'd been reading him say he wanted to die, but also that he wanted to live, and imagining it to be a real battle the outcome of which wasn't yet known. I was rooting for him.

Happy birthday, Osamu #Dazai! This time last year I was able to share a few short stories of his I had translated, this year I am delighted to say that I am publishing my first book of translations, Retrogression - a study of Dazai’s early attempt at the Akutagawa prize.
All four short stories will be released into the public domain, free to read, whereas the book will contain a few extras such as the letters, translator’s notes, biographies and references.

I was able to read 75 books this year, though it doesn't feel like that much! My to-read pile is still ever-growing. Short summaries of the top 3 to have the most impact on me:
1. No longer Human by Osamu #Dazai (truly life-changing read, if a little depressing)
2. Heaven Official's Blessing #tgcf (What can I say? Mo Xiang Tong Xiu is a genius)
3. #Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (When humanity's days are over, what is an android to do? Make coffee, and watch the world go by)
