  1. New Manga Read: Osamu Dazai's No Longer Human

This is now my second time reading a manga adaptation of a classic of Japanese literature. This is an adaptation of Osamu Dazai's 1948 novel No Longer Human, a largely autobiographical story about the son of wealthy politician, who is the last son and largely ignored by his family.

Content warnings from Anime Planet for this story include Alcoholism, Sexual Abuse, Physical Abuse, Explicit Sex, and Suicide. All those topics are covered in this story which makes me really wonder how horrible the original author's life was.

Our main character, Yozo Oba, is a tortured, abused man who feels so disconnected from reality that he doesn't even consider himself human. He is a chronic alcoholic, abuses women, and attempts suicide on a few occasions. It's such a sad, sad story with such minor moments of joy interspersed with tragedy after tragedy and lives harmed by the entirely disconnected Oba.

I felt uncomfortable reading it from beginning to end.

    So, there's that.

This year’s Japanese literature in English translation was yet again ruled by a clowder of cozy cat fiction and the occasional crime story. But 2025 wasn’t without some surprises. Two ghos…

While Booth offers more hour-to-hour details and less reflection than I would like, his travelogue of walking rural Japan through its literary and military history is remarkable, memorable, and genuinely enlightening.

  12. Just saw a really wonderful review for Retrogression that lifted my spirits!

"...you can clearly feel the translator's dedication and willingness to portray Dazai in the right way..."

  15. I really really like #comics, #art, #animation and #conventions.
I mainly listen to #vocaloid, #jpop (early #2000s-early #2010s?) and #electronic music (many subgenres, but my fav is #chiptune!).
    My fav characters are #OsamuDazai, #hatsunemiku, #metaknight and #jackinabox
My other hobbies besides drawing and writing are #photography, #magazines and I occasionally like reading national #newspaper and random #tv stuff (national too!)

  18. Human Lost by Dazai Osamu is now up and available to read for free on Yobanashi Café.

A candid account of his time in Musashino Hospital, it was the first time Dazai used the term 'no longer human' and includes words scribbled on the walls of his cell.

  21. Book 5: “Early Light” by #OsamuDazai.

Three short stories, all featuring a drunk, somewhat useless man. I liked the second and third, about a writer’s ambivalence towards Mt. Fuji and a woman who ends up happily working at a bar to get away from her broke, no-good husband, respectively.

  25. La amistad entre Occidente y Oriente es apabullante en este país. Hasta el punto de que ya no sé quién es quién. Y toda esta vista del barrio, el comercio, los expatriados, el lujo y la ropa me hace replantear el concepto. 26. Satō Haruo on #Dazai Osamu:

"He has the kind of romantic spirit of a selfish, good-for-nothing wastrel, but more than that, he has let this seep deep down into the very marrow of his being. The uninhibited yet fragile self flows out of control, and it is the lot in life of this particular variety of man to continually contemplate himself until his self-awareness becomes intertwined with his bones."
