  10. @Pepijn and skat, being a tax or a fine or a penalty is what evolved in English into scot-free.
After a brush with the Danish authorities and courts the English peasants talked of coming away skat-free which over many centuries became scot-free.

  15. @andrewl this is particularly interesting for the history geeks. There are a lot of other placename elements that could be studied in this way - ending in 'by' or including 'thorp/thorpe'. @histodons #Viking #DaneLaw #AngloSaxon

  20. @_Davidsmith Wow. In Swedish, it is “ströva" and probably similar in the other Scandinavian languages. Got to have roots from back when they had a lot of contact with the old norse. #Danelaw #Danelagh

Now should be the time to undo the work of #AlfredTheGreat.
Time to catch up: a defensive union of the #Saxon kingdoms is no longer needed: there are no raids by #Highlanders, the #Irish, the #Vikings anymore and there is no #Danelaw.
    However, there's #NATO + the #EuropeanUnion.

1,137 years after #Ælfred became King of the #AngloSaxons , it's time for a paradigm shift. It is time for the #RegionsOfEurope 2.0, in particular for the #BritishIsles:

  30. Early morning along the water meadows next to the #Ouzel #Bedfordshire a couple of years ago. Also understand that it formed the border of the #Danelaw
    Spring must strike again,

  37. @davidallengreen i think #UKLaw would be more easily recognisable, even if it's mostly EW law being discussed under it

(personally though i'd choose #DaneLaw but that's a different story)
