#uk #histodons anyone has a good reading list about the legacy of #Danelaw? Or essentially #Norman conquest has homogenised the #Saxon Dane divides? Or the reminiscent of Francophile in British aristocracy are the twisted way of representing of it?

@andrewl this is particularly interesting for the history geeks. There are a lot of other placename elements that could be studied in this way - ending in 'by' or including 'thorp/thorpe'. @histodons #Viking #DaneLaw #AngloSaxon

@_Davidsmith Wow. In Swedish, it is “ströva" and probably similar in the other Scandinavian languages. Got to have roots from back when they had a lot of contact with the old norse. #Danelaw #Danelagh

#UKpol #UKreformNow should be the time to undo the work of #AlfredTheGreat.
Time to catch up: a defensive union of the #Saxon kingdoms is no longer needed: there are no raids by #Highlanders, the #Irish, the #Vikings anymore and there is no #Danelaw.
However, there's #NATO + the #EuropeanUnion.1,137 years after #Ælfred became King of the #AngloSaxons , it's time for a paradigm shift. It is time for the #RegionsOfEurope 2.0, in particular for the #BritishIsles:

Early morning along the water meadows next to the #Ouzel #Bedfordshire a couple of years ago. Also understand that it formed the border of the #Danelaw
Spring must strike again,
Against the shield of winter

@davidallengreen i think #UKLaw would be more easily recognisable, even if it's mostly EW law being discussed under it
(personally though i'd choose #DaneLaw but that's a different story)

#ÆþelrædUnræd ordered the massacre of Danes in England outside the #Danelaw #OnThisDay in 1002; the St. Brice's Day Massacre has been described by some as the first documented #genocide in Anglo-Saxon #England & is a stain on the reign of Æþelræd the Unready:
