The Daily Performance of Being Fine
When was the last time you said “I’m fine” and absolutely was not? “I’m fine” has become muscle memory. Not a statement. A reflex. Something you say so people stop looking at you like you might fall apart in the cereal aisle. Lately it comes out daily. Sometimes hourly. It’s the verbal equivalent of slapping duct tape over a flashing warning light and calling it maintenance. Both jobs are on fire in their own special ways. Different uniforms, same nonsense. Short staffing. […]https://ericfoltin.com/2026/02/03/the-daily-performance-of-being-fine/

Something on your “to-do list” that never gets done.
Ah, my “to-do” list. It’s less a list and more a sprawling, multi-dimensional epic poem of procrastination, etched in the digital equivalent of ancient cave paintings. And there, nestled amongst the urgent (like “rewrite the entire internet in iambic pentameter”) and the vaguely aspirational (“learn to play the theremin while juggling flaming bowling pins”), resides the task that has achieved legendary status: “Organize my spice drawer alphabetically by subatomic particle.”
Now, you might ask, “Why subatomic particle?” And to that I say, “Why not?” The conventional alphabetical approach is so… pedestrian. So predictable. Where’s the challenge? Where’s the existential dread that comes with trying to distinguish between a neutrino and a muon when all you want is a pinch of oregano?
The beauty of this task is its beautiful, breathtaking pointlessness. It’s a Sisyphean struggle against the very nature of spice organization. First, there’s the particle identification. Do I need a physics degree to know if my cumin is more of a “down quark” or an “up quark” kind of spice? Then, there’s the sheer volume of spices. I’m convinced my spice collection is actually a portal to another dimension, a dimension where spices breed and multiply at an alarming rate. Every time I open the drawer, it’s like a tiny spice rave in there.
And let’s not forget the existential implications. Is my life really defined by the alphabetical arrangement of my spices by subatomic particle? What does it say about me as a person that this task haunts my to-do list like a spice-scented ghost? Perhaps the true meaning of life isn’t found in the perfectly organized spice drawer, but in the chaotic, beautiful mess that it is.
So, it remains there, mocking me with its impossible grandeur. It’s a constant reminder that some dreams, like perfectly organizing your spices by subatomic particle, are best left as dreams. And honestly, I think I’m okay with that. It gives me something to aspire to… or, more accurately, something to continue avoiding with a mixture of amusement and mild terror.

Something on your “to-do list” that never gets done?
1. To go a whole day without negative self-talk
2. To think I am not the cause of bad things happening to me
3. To stop worrying about stuffThe seasons change, and you change, but your Lord abides evermore the same, and the streams of His love are as deep, as broad, and as full as ever.
Charles H. SpurgeonMy household had the chance to sleep late this morning. The thing is, every time I fell back to sleep, I would have these dreams that weren’t so pleasant. Here, I am now opening my blog to answer today’s prompt and so I can set my mind on the things above. Colossians 3:2
Set your minds on the things that are above, not on the things that are on earth.Read full chapter.
I am thinking of several things to write about, such as being in a losing season. At times, this doesn’t feel like a season. It feels more like life. Bad things seem to follow me. I mean tragic things. I even catch myself saying Jesus, come get me. I’ve even prayed that He comes to get me so I don’t make any more mistakes in life. I am done deciding the right thing to do or being convicted to do the right thing or beating myself up when I don’t listen and not do the right thing. Ugh! So here’s the thing. I’ve already butchered my topics on my to-do list of the things not to do. 💁♀️ HOWEVER, I am also reminded of these things; For one, this verse, Colossians 3:2, is on repeat in my weary brain 🧠 😳. Also I am reminded that there are others who feel the same way about losing seasons/a losing life as I do. So again for those in the back. I hold the title for a backseat baptist. Although I have a pentecostal fire in me like the 🎵 song, Rattle states. My family are worshippers in various denominations. As long as we all point to the way. Jesus is the way. Take a listen here:
Colossians 3:2 Set your minds on the things that are above, not on the things that are on earth.
I also remind myself and write this for others to insert their name instead of mine… whoever reads this blog that;
1. I am not the devil who makes all bad things happen in this life. He wants me defeated. He wants to take the strength and energy that I do have and deplete it even more so that I can’t glorify God in this life. He wants me to think negative things about myself so that I can’t show you how the love of Jesus keeps me in perfect peace.
Isaiah 26:3 You will keep him in perfect peace,
Whose mind is stayed on You,
Because he trusts in You.And, the 😈 devil wants to get me worried about everything in my life. If you are like me in any way or the situations are similar please say this prayer for me, with me, for you as well…
Dear Lord, we are all weary for some reason. We have things that we put on a to-do list to do and some to not do for the day. We end up trusting the chaos of life . We take our minds off of trusting you. Help us Lord to trust you even if we can’t see any thing but chaos. Remind us that You have a plan for us. Remind us of the things that are beautiful in our lives. You can give us a hope in this life so that we keep going in spite of the devil and his jealousy towards our promise in You. We do have hope. We also have You in this life. We don’t have to wait until we die to receive blessings from you. That’s another lie the devil wants us to believe. But we do have hope in life. We do have You right beside us as we go through our day. This Lord is enough. We praise you for what you have done and for the things You will do for us. In Jesus Name. 🙏 Amen.
Until Next Time,
Heidi

Daily writing prompt Something on your “to-do list” that never gets done. View all responsesI make a lot of to-do lists. I post a lot of them here. I don’t really have an issue with failing to complete everything. My issue is finishing everything in a timely manner.
How about an example? Okay. Let us say I made a list of things for today, Saturday. Hypothetically it would be a short, manageable list of achievable things. If I put my nose to the grindstone I would clear the list over the course of a day. Instead I get distracted and I procrastinate and some of the things get punted off until Sunday. The same thing happens on Sunday. I make progress, but the last item or two gets punted off to Monday morning. Then it happens again, on a smaller scale, and the last thing gets punted to Monday after work.
Everything gets completed eventually, just not on schedule. None of what I’ve written so far answers the actual question though so let me think for a second. What is something on my life’s to-do list that never gets done? I never hit a huge mega lottery. That’s been on my to-do list since I first learned what a lottery was. I haven’t completed it yet, but one of these days….
