El domingo 24 de junio, tras permanecer dos días en la vivienda junto a los cadáveres de su familia, Benoit bajó al gimnasio instalado en el sótano.
Allí colocó una cuerda en una máquina de musculación y se ahorcó.
Cerca del cuerpo había varios medicamentos
La autopsia confirmó posteriormente que la causa de la muerte fue el ahorcamiento y descartó que hubiera fallecido por una sobredosis.
La preocupación dentro de la WWE iba aumentando.
Como Benoit no respondía al teléfono y nadie conseguía localizarlo, la empresa pidió a la Oficina del Sheriff del condado de Fayette que acudiera a comprobar qué ocurría.
Durante la tarde del lunes 25 de junio varios agentes llegaron a la vivienda.
Les acompañaban Chavo Guerrero y el árbitro Scott Armstrong, que esperaban encontrar a Benoit enfermo o inconsciente.
La realidad fue mucho peor.
Los agentes encontraron primero el cuerpo de Nancy.
Después localizaron el cadáver del pequeño Daniel en su habitación.
Finalmente descendieron al gimnasio del sótano, donde hallaron el cuerpo sin vida de Chris Benoit.
La escena dejó completamente conmocionados incluso a los investigadores más veteranos.
Uno de los detalles que más llamó la atención fue la presencia de una Biblia junto a Nancy y otra junto a Daniel.
Nunca se ha podido determinar por qué Benoit las colocó allí.
Ese gesto dio lugar a infinidad de teorías, pero ninguna pudo demostrarse.
Durante las primeras horas también circularon rumores sobre una posible fuga de gas o una intoxicación por monóxido de carbono.
La investigación descartó rápidamente esa posibilidad.
Poco después apareció otra información sorprendente.
Se supo que, pocas horas antes de que los cuerpos fueran encontrados, desde el ordenador personal de Benoit se había realizado una búsqueda en Internet sobre **la resurrección del profeta Elías**.
Aquella consulta alimentó numerosas especulaciones, aunque nunca pudo demostrarse quién la realizó exactamente ni qué significado tenía.
Tras la tragedia, el exluchador Chris Nowinski solicitó que el cerebro de Benoit fuera estudiado por especialistas de la Universidad de Virginia Occidental.
Los resultados fueron impactantes.
Los médicos descubrieron que padecía una **Encefalopatía Traumática Crónica (CTE)** extremadamente avanzada.
El daño cerebral era comparable al de una persona de unos 85 años con un Alzheimer muy avanzado.
Su lóbulo frontal, responsable del control de los impulsos, la toma de decisiones y el juicio, presentaba un deterioro severo.
Los especialistas dejaron claro que ese hallazgo **no justificaba ni explicaba por sí solo los asesinatos**.
Lo más probable es que confluyeran numerosos factores: daño cerebral acumulado, deterioro psicológico, abuso de medicamentos y esteroides, estrés y problemas personales.
La reacción de la WWE fue inmediata.
Retiró prácticamente cualquier referencia a Benoit de su programación, dejó de comercializar productos con su imagen y confirmó que nunca ingresará en el Salón de la Fama.
El caso también cambió la forma de entender las lesiones cerebrales en los deportes de contacto.
La empresa endureció los protocolos médicos, implantó controles más estrictos sobre las conmociones cerebrales y comenzó a limitar numerosos golpes directos a la cabeza.
Otras disciplinas, especialmente el fútbol americano, impulsaron nuevas investigaciones sobre los efectos de los traumatismos repetidos.
Han pasado casi veinte años y el nombre de Chris Benoit sigue dividiendo a los aficionados.
Para muchos fue uno de los luchadores técnicamente más brillantes que han subido a un ring.
Para otros, cualquier logro deportivo quedó borrado para siempre por los asesinatos de Nancy y Daniel.
Su historia continúa siendo una de las más perturbadoras del deporte moderno porque reúne éxito, obsesión, enfermedad, deterioro mental y un crimen que nadie supo anticipar.
Quizá esa sea la pregunta que sigue sin respuesta: ¿en qué momento dejó de ser el luchador admirado por millones para convertirse en el protagonista de la mayor tragedia de la historia de la lucha libre?

Знакомая боль: пользователи опечатываются при регистрации, а база данных медленно, но верно превращается в хаос. На одном из проектов в поддержку артистов мы столкнулись с этим лицом к лицу. Раньше карточки артистов создавались автоматически прямо из заявок на выступления. В итоге мы получали гору дубликатов с одинаковыми почтами и телефонами. Администрировать такую базу и координировать выступления стало безумно сложно. Конечно, правильнее всего - пресекать появление дублей еще на входе, но нам нужно было оперативно перебирать систему на ходу и работать с тем, что уже накопилось в проде. Что мы придумали: Решили провести «склейку» профилей. Но просто удалить лишнее было нельзя - за каждым дублем тянулся шлейф из бронирований площадок и блокировок. Наша задача была перенести всю эту историю на одного, «главного» артиста в группе. Правило склейки сделали простым, но учли важную деталь - связи могут тянуться цепочкой. Например, если у первого и второго артиста совпал телефон, а у второго и третьего - почта, то вся троица объединяется в одну группу. Дальше мы определяем одного "главного" и аккуратно переносим все бронирования на него
