  1. 2/ #ComputerEducation in the #80s

    Bad: the next summer I went to "Mini University" at University of Manitoba, which was more like a Liberal Arts daycamp.

    Had to do Art stuff as well, and the "Computer" section was sitting in a lab playing with Logo, the Fisher Price language that teaches you to move a triangle around on the screen. Instructors knew shit-all.

    We did spend some time on the mainframe, sending console messages and playing Adventure, but mostly useless and frustrating.

  5. 1/ When I was a kid, a pretty privileged one, I was very into computers and wanted to know more about them. I had a number of #ComputerEducation experiences, in the early 80s, good and bad:

    Good: a two-week, all-day course at University of Winnipeg, taught on Vic-20s, instructors were student age and *knew their shit*, taught us Basic and as I recall we typed in a fairly passable version of Asteroids.

    Plus, access afterwards to computer labs full of PET machines, some number of hours.

    Bliss.

  19. A few days ago, while wandering aimlessly around the internet, I cam across this gem;
    nand2tetris.org/

    nand2tetris is a training course on computers from first principles to the creation of a Tetris like game. Designed mostly for high school kids.
