Civilization 2 - Command & Conquer Tiberian Africa Scenario Tour

Our user hibiird has been playing around with the programming language Scratch, and has programmed an online version which adheres rather closely to #Civ2 . He has released the first version of it, which is not yet perfect, but is playable with all features, like building cities, improving tiles, resarching technologies and fighting wars. If you want to have a look, then check it out here https://turbowarp.org/1065384965?turbo , and come to this thread to give feedback https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/birdciv-civ-on-scratch.701128/ .

Our moderator Quintillus has done some internet archaeology, and has stumbled upon a range of artefacts from the year 2000. Apparently civfanatics has won 2 prizes anno 2000, and he wondered about the context for these prizes. He dug out a range of old civ fan sites, as well as some of their history. If you're interested in civfanatics-once-upon-a-time, then check here https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/hodadian-award-pride-of-the-world-april-2000.701432/ .

5 years ago for Civ1s 30th anniversary we posted Blake's video here about how to play it in HD with the best mods & scenarios and now as we close in on Sid Meier's Civilization II 30th anniversary the time has come to do the same for Civ2. In the intervening years Blake has painstakingly searched, rescued & preserved several thousand Civ2 scenarios made over the last 3 decades and is now showcasing many of the best total conversion ones in this video. There’s also previews on some crazy new mods of Blake's that change nearly everything in Civ2 to look like Heroes of Might & Magic, Command & Conquer, Red Alert, Dune, and Alpha Centauri to name a few. Eventually he’ll be doing episodes on playing Colonization, Master of Magic, Alpha C, CtP and Civ3-4-etc in HD too but that’ll be a few more years work. Curious? Check more here https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/civ-video-series-ep-04-civilization-2-hd-tour-with-mods-scenarios.700268/

We recently posted about Blake's new #Civ3 preservation project continuing the work from his old #Civ2 preservation project which went on to preserve several thousand lost Civ2 mods & scenarios. Now he's kicked off a new #Civ4 & Civ4-Colonization scenario/mods preservation project starting with 3 large collections totaling around 9 Gigabytes. If you're a fan of Civ4 and its mods then we encourage you to grab copies for yourselves and if you happen to have your own large collection of Civ4 mods & scenarios you'd be willing to donate then please let us know here https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/civ4-civ4col-scenario-mod-preservation-project-log.700754/ .

@FrankBlack78 @BlakesSanctum I'm afraid currently nowhere :(. Both #Civ1 and #Civ2 are apparently in some copyright limbo, it seems to not be clear who holds the copyright or wether it can be bought from anyone. Just that neither 2K nor Firaxis hold it. That's why they're not on GOG, Steam or anywhere else :/.
So the only option is really used copies from ebay, if you can find any.Sorry :/

Time flies, when you're playing civ, and the same applies when you are browsing the forums! Today is one of the days which can be considered the birthday of Civfanatics, and we turn 25, which is in the age of the internet nearly biblical. For this occasion we have written a retrospective, which hopefully includes the most interesting things about the forums. This starts from our timeline, the stats, our best content, the notable projects the community has created, from mods to podcasts, the weirdest things the mods have never told anyone, and other things you might not know. Have a read here https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/25-years-of-civfanatics-a-retrospective.700385/

@Eetschrijver ahh...mmhh... I assume you are not familiar with the original Colonization? https://store.steampowered.com/app/327400/Sid_Meiers_Colonization_Classic/
Because your assessment is right: This is definitely made to appeal to a retro audience, #Civ2 fans being one of the targets.

@GamesMissed yeah, the Sid Meier Megabundle has only from #Civ3 upwards.
There was a DVD set a long time ago which had all of them, but afterwards there were some copyright issues, and the state of #Civ1 and #Civ2 is in a limbo :/ -
@GamesMissed as far as we know #Civ2 is not available on any download services, so I'm slightly confused 😅 .
Lots of memories with the tech tree though 🥰

Thanks to the success and popularity of the recent Fallout TV show many fallout players are returning to their favourite Fallout game. However what if you wanted to play a #4X turn based strategy game set in the #Fallout universe? Well fear not, CivFanatics and the #Civilization series has you covered! :)
While there are no Fallout mods for #Civ2 per se, there are plenty of similar Apocalyptic wasteland scenarios that many of which can be found here: https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/scenario-hunt.657278/
However the best ones are for good old #Civ3 where Thorgrimm created the truly remarkable Fallout The Rebirth of Civilization total conversion scenario based on the earlier Fallout games. Then Sudo007 took Thorgrimm's work and created a Fallout Liberty scenario based on Fallout 3. Both suffered some frustrating bugs however in 2024 Fallible_Fiend patched both scenarios with bug fixes and new features.
Fallout Rebirth: https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/fallout-the-rebirth-of-civilization.199196/
Fallout Liberty: https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/fallout-liberty.540161/Give them a try!

With the #Twitch VoDpocalypse on its way, I'm in the process of uploading my various playthroughs to #YouTube playlists, starting with the rarest. For your watching-at-1.5x-speed and/or falling-asleep-to pleasure, presenting what I believe is the only playthrough of the #Civ II: Fantastic Worlds scenario "Master of Orion Jr." (no longer officially available) anywhere on the Internet: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVN5f1L3zSCZMs69hBT_XgZ3RwZeklQJt

#GOG has today revelaed its #Dreamlist https://www.gog.com/dreamlist/?sort=global_wishlist_votes_count&order=desc&page=1 , an official list where you can vote which games they should try to acquire and preserve! Our moderator blake00 has already a long time ago started a campaign to bring #Civ1 and #Civ2 back, and now there is a realistic chance via the Dreamlist!
The fight for the top spot is fierce! On first place we currently have "Black & White" with nearly 60.000 votes. Civ1 and Civ2 are somewhere on page 6 and 7, with 15.000 and nearly 14.000 votes respectively.
Vote here for Civ1 https://www.gog.com/dreamlist/game/sid-meier-s-civilization , and here for Civ2 https://www.gog.com/dreamlist/game/sid-meier-s-civilization-ii !
Also come and discuss the voting for Civ1 here https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/vote-for-sid-meiers-civilization-i-and-ii-mge-test-of-time-to-be-added-to-gog.675300/ and for Civ2 here https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/vote-for-sid-meiers-civilization-i-and-ii-mge-test-of-time-to-be-added-to-gog.675301/ -

The Norwegian website Spillhistorie.no, a retrogaming website, has interviewed Michael Haire, the former artistic director of Microprose, who worked on #Civ1, #Civ2 and #AlphaCentauri, among other titles. In this interview he describes how Microprose started up, that an art department for Civ1 was a big leap in these old computer game days, and that MicroProse being bought by a competitor lead to the formation of Firaxis. You can read the interview here https://spillhistorie.no/qas-with-michael-haire-former-art-director-at-microprose/ , and discuss it with us here https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/q-a-with-michael-haire-former-artistic-director-at-microprose.694155/ .

The Baltimore Banner has just before Christmas ran a title called "How Baltimore County became a hidden world of video game companies".
As many of you know, Baltimore is the home to our most important gaming studio, Firaxis, but not only that. Its predecessor, Microprose, was also situated in Baltimore, and more recently also many things have happened there. Firaxis personnel has spawnd other studios like "Big Huge Games", which were responsible for "Rise of Nations", and very recently Oxide Games, which has developed "Ara: History Untold". And we don't know yet what games will come from 2 other studious founded by Firaxis employees, Bit Reactor and Midsummer Studios.
If you want to read a bit more, then check out the article here https://www.thebaltimorebanner.com/article/baltimore-county-video-game-developers-A7WWMHUXM5D2VDQG7ZOSCUVFQQ/ , and discuss it with us here https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/the-baltimore-banner-how-baltimore-county-became-a-hidden-world-of-video-game-companies.693772/ -

The Civ Twitter account has published a video about #Civ1, when the first important features were created. This is supposedly the first video out of a series, where also the other titles will be featured, so we will also see #Civ2 - #Civ6.
If you want to discuss the video(s) with us, then join us here:

A part of the current Steam strategy fest is the indie game “Theocracy”. Theocracy is an old-school #turnbased #4X game, inspired by #Civ1 and #civ2 but with a focus on religion and mysticism. So besides expanding your empire, you also need to spread your religion and convert pagans.
The game is currently on sale for 4.89€ instead of 6.99 until September 4, and the dev is a fellow civ-fanatic too!

- #Civ1
- #Colonization
- #Civ2
- #AlphaCentauri
- #Civ3
- #Civ4
- #Civ5
- #BeyondEarth
- #Civ6
- #Civ7Because this is the best list, obviously.

The video game history foundation has posted a new and interesting article. The article describes that 87% of historic video games (range 1960-2009) are currently not available at all, not on GoG, Steam, or elsewhere.
This is very relevant for the Civ community. #Civ1 and #Civ2 are still not legally downloadable anywhere, so they are endangered.
Let's hope that these classics will be preserved for the future.Article link: https://gamehistory.org/87percent/
