Our user hibiird has been playing around with the programming language Scratch, and has programmed an online version which adheres rather closely to #Civ2 . He has released the first version of it, which is not yet perfect, but is playable with all features, like building cities, improving tiles, resarching technologies and fighting wars. Our moderator Quintillus has done some internet archaeology, and has stumbled upon a range of artefacts from the year 2000. Apparently civfanatics has won 2 prizes anno 2000, and he wondered about the context for these prizes. He dug out a range of old civ fan sites, as well as some of their history. Both #Civ1 and #Civ2 are apparently in some copyright limbo, it seems to not be clear who holds the copyright or wether it can be bought from anyone. Just that neither 2K nor Firaxis hold it. That's why they're not on GOG, Steam or anywhere else :/.
So the only option is really used copies from ebay, if you can find any.Sorry :/

@GamesMissed as far as we know #Civ2 is not available on any download services, so I'm slightly confused 😅 .

Thanks to the success and popularity of the recent Fallout TV show many fallout players are returning to their favourite Fallout game. However what if you wanted to play a #4X turn based strategy game set in the #Fallout universe? Well fear not, CivFanatics and the #Civilization series has you covered! :)
While there are no Fallout mods for #Civ2 per se, there are plenty of similar Apocalyptic wasteland scenarios that many of which can be found here: https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/scenario-hunt.657278/
However the best ones are for good old #Civ3 where Thorgrimm created the truly remarkable Fallout The Rebirth of Civilization total conversion scenario based on the earlier Fallout games. Then Sudo007 took Thorgrimm's work and created a Fallout Liberty scenario based on Fallout 3. Both suffered some frustrating bugs however in 2024 Fallible_Fiend patched both scenarios with bug fixes and new features.

The Norwegian website Spillhistorie.no, a retrogaming website, has interviewed Michael Haire, the former artistic director of Microprose, who worked on #Civ1, #Civ2 and #AlphaCentauri, among other titles.
