  1. Worry Wart

    The troubles of this passing day
    weigh heavy on my head,
    until I join the hollow-eyed,
    the weary walking dead;
    I stumble through the crumbling streets
    where nameless fears are bred,
    consumed by temoral things
    and this mortal dread.

    O, that this wart of worry
    might be lifted from my head,
    this small, persistent torment
    on which my fears are fed;
    that I might cease rehearsing
    each bitter word unsaid,
    and stop imagining sorrows
    still waiting up ahead.

    O, let me quit resisting
    the road where I am led,
    and trust the ground beneath me
    though shadows o'er me spread,
    for life is more than trembling
    before the things I dread—
    perhaps the path I fear to walk
    leads to trust instead.

  3. CW: CW: Christian/religious poetry (not by me)

    This was recommended to me by my undergrad adviser (may not be the right term, I mean the prof that was grading me on my honors thesis in undergrad) a decade ago.

    I ended up not writing on it. I honestly struggled to understand it.

    It's still a little hard to understand, but I think I get it a lot more now in this stage of life.

    "Carrion Comfort" is a phrase that's been buzzing around my mind lately, for reasons I can't quite get into, but let's say I was thinking about how we as humans reach for lesser comforts when we're hurting.

    (I'm doing well, btw, don't worry ;)

    Carrion Comfort
    By Gerard Manley Hopkins

    Not, I'll not, carrion comfort, Despair, not feast on thee;
    Not untwist — slack they may be — these last strands of man
    In me ór, most weary, cry I can no more. I can;
    Can something, hope, wish day come, not choose not to be.
    But ah, but O thou terrible, why wouldst thou rude on me
    Thy wring-world right foot rock? lay a lionlimb against me? scan
    With darksome devouring eyes my bruisèd bones? and fan,
    O in turns of tempest, me heaped there; me frantic to avoid thee and flee?

       Why? That my chaff might fly; my grain lie, sheer and clear.
    Nay in all that toil, that coil, since (seems) I kissed the rod,
    Hand rather, my heart lo! lapped strength, stole joy, would laugh, chéer.
    Cheer whom though? the hero whose heaven-handling flung me, fóot tród
    Me? or me that fought him? O which one? is it each one? That night, that year
    Of now done darkness I wretch lay wrestling with (my God!) my God.

  4. Backslider, Return

    Same old battles, and always troubled
    It didn't get better. My woes doubled
    What's the reason? I'm totally floored!
    Frustrated and weary, I left the Lord

    But where am I headed? I simply roam
    Dare I think of going back home?
    What, this time, will be made right?
    I see no sun. Just the black midnight.

    A voice so sweet, and yet so stern
    reminds me that I know where to turn
    Years have passed. Is it too late?
    I wonder. I ponder, and I wait.

    Time is passing. It's slipping away
    Yesterday's gone. But there's still today
    I'll never be happy. Never be whole
    Until Christ is back in my soul

    Dear God, I give up. I surrender all
    Restore me, Lord. I've heard Your call
    The way might be bumpy, rough, uphill
    But I claim blessing, if I do Your will
