Hana – Omen, 2000

Hana is one of those groups that appeared more in on-trend compilations than on releases of their own. Omen was this duo's second and to my knowledge final release; members Anisa Romero and Jeff Greinke have gone on to other musical and non-musical artistic pursuits.

Sitting at the junction of #downtempo and #DreamPop, they're pretty much a no-brainer to be in my collection. This kind of #ethereal music with just a dash of a quasi- #tribal #electronica has the danger of falling into cliche - sort of a poor man’s #DeadCanDance - but among hundreds of similar offerings on #CDbaby at the time, this release stood out.

#SnoopDogg pushing #TunesFM as a replacement for #Spotify proves one thing: the #rugpull is coming to the world of music lol.

But in all honesty, the idea of paying for time played off a song is not new at all, and even though Spotify has undervalued most songs, the deal between big publishers and Spotify is a different story than you publishing from #CDBaby or some shit.

The big sell from Spotify right now, and the thing that makes it addictive, is the #discovery feature.

I have 4 tracks on #CDBaby.
Thousands of streams without a single buy, but what's the revenues?

6.42$... yes, that's it: I haven't planned to become rich with my music but at least not being fooled...

Under "Social Video Monetizing" for the 2024 I have 6620 streams for 0.42$ = 0,0000634 x single stream.

Checking the stats further I see that almost the streams are from #facebook few from #YouTube (which pays ZERO).

So first #TuneCore, now #YouTube. They are trying to scrap from our art, creativity and potential income making datasets for sale, without even giving us a single penny. Apparently #CDbaby (and all of Downtown Music Holdings) has been sold to Universal Music Group for $775 Million. That doesn't seem like good news for #indie musicians.

@mirlo we use #CDBaby because they charge a one time fee per release, where as #Distrokid used a subscription model (which is popular for doing a 'waterfall release').

We've released an EP and an album this way.
Two weeks ago we finally received our first streaming check, which almost covers the cost of distributing the firt EP. 7 years after the release date.. 😂

Financially this is not sustainable, for us.

Benefits of #Distrokid over #CDBaby for digital music release? I see a lot of people talk about Distrokid but I’ve used CD Baby with no issues for all my releases so I’m curious if anyone has experience with both.

I used the originator once, CD Baby, (and met #CDbaby's original CEO online via https://sive.rs/ {Derek replies to anyone via email})

I set the maximum allowable "Pay Point" because I view my #music earnings as a passively growing stash. For the first and, so far, only time, I emptied my profits over four years (2019-2023) so that I had enough for a laptop, on which I now do everything. Hopefully, the next time I'm hard pressed won't be anytime soon...

@donutshoes #CDBaby sold my #music online in the early 2000s and was my gateway to digital distribution. A couple years ago they told me they would either mail back or destroy their last remaining physical copies of my stuff as they had allegedly run out of warehouse space.

It lost its spark shortly before @sivers sold it to #DiscMakers after he had a really bad year: https://sive.rs/loss. (The money went to his charitable trust: https://sive.rs/trust)

@Andrulianblog I was using #CDBaby, which was a one-time fee of $100 per "album" and the songs stay online perpetually. Can't complain, CDBaby were easy to work with and they got the job done. My lack of streams is the result of lack of promotion, entirely my fault! And I'm not getting rich off of #Bandcamp either, but the upfront cost is $0 so every download is a net profit ;-)

Emotional times... I just uploaded a song to #cdbaby for release this October! So first of all: 'Woohoo!' I'm back in the saddle - a bit. 💪 I was going to release this single last year, but then had to cancel it because I had a major #mecfs relapse after my second COVID jab. So fingers crossed that nothing similar happens this year, hence the 'Eeek!’ 😰 It's a song I recorded back in the 00s. I haven't recorded anything new since I got ill, singing is still impossible. 😔

Oh man we used #CDBaby for our short lived record label. #RIP. They made it super easy to get our stuff up onto the iTunes Store (remember that?), and with their physical sales you could use an affiliate link and get an extra buck per sale. With the help of CD Baby we almost broke even! (“Almost” might be a slight exaggeration, but still!)

It costs artists so much just to put #music out into the world. I'm grateful for #streaming services, as they are an easy way for people to discover new artists, but they pay a negligible amount per stream, as you can see in my report from my Digital Distributor, #CDBaby. You'll also notice a significant lag between when a song was streamed, and when I get the notification. I also don't get paid until I hit a minimum amount, in my case, $20.

Uploaded my next release to CDBaby for distribution yesterday! It was an ORDEAL. And then they freaked me out by sending an email this morning saying they had created a "promo page" for the track, leading me to believe THEY HAD ALREADY RELEASED IT. :AAAAAA:

Nope, it's still "being processed," and I have it scheduled to release on the 22nd. *whew*

Anyway, I'll probably try out #DistroKid for my next release.

If I had one critique, it's that in 'Stone,' the vocal and piano fit beautifully together, timbrally but the drums stick out a bit. BUT, again, that's taste, art not science.

I would say, get the cello on, do your final mixes ASAP and then RELEASE, RELEASE, RELEASE.

Stick out an EP via #Distrokid or #CDBaby and then move on to your next batch of songwriting / production.

Excellent music, excellent work, well done. And you clearly *are* a producer so own that. :-P
