  1. BookOfClubs is playing Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? Enhanced Edition on Twitch

  2. I'm going to see #Carmen at the #SeattleOpera tonight, which reminds me.

I'm old enough to have lived through like 6 Supermans, 4 Spidermans, and not a single live action Carmen Sandiego. Hell, I've experienced multiple recastings of Scorpion from Mortal Kombat, but still no #CarmenSandiego.

    This is an outrage, gumshoes.

  7. today's dose of software history: Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego? by Brøderbund

i wonder how many kids never got to see the physical box contents, because they played it in a school classroom, or borrowed the disks from a friend.

this is one of those games where having the physical box contents was imperative, because you couldn't play the game without them. the game came with a *thick* paperback copy of New American Desk Encyclopedia, printed specifically for the game.

in order to progress through each investigation (and track down the thief), you have to hunt for clues by looking up objects, places, and eras in the encyclopedia.

the best part of the game is that learning about other people and places around the world is incidental to the act of playing the game. you're never grilled for memorized facts, and your ability to progress is limited only by logical deduction and encyclopedia entry lookups.

the rear box cover art is a masterwork of false tableaux design - they even spent the time to build a fake chronoskimmer to complete the effect.

  16. TIL that the "Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?" theme (yes, the one from the 90s) is #Mozart's "Singt dem großen Bassa Lieder" with custom lyrics. The funny part? The original lyrics kind of fit anyway. 😂

Ahh, cartoons with themes based on classical music. You can't beat that!

I think I spent too long not enjoying the task of playing with characters in media like they were pretty dolls to make kiss. Honest to god, I actually think that hearing Tamsyn Muir specifically refer to the idea of being ‘locked out’ of the fandom playspace that made me realise it’s a real privilege to get to do this very fun stuff for free. Sure, I’ve written about ships in the past, and I think that practice is good to keep up with. I do wish I had more ships that featured at least one guy though, I think that may be more a weakness of the kind of media I watch, written by inadequate men who don’t really think very much about what women might actually like.

With that in mind, let us speak of –

    LA FEMMES DEUX!
