  1. IONE, CA — Yesterday, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) again partnered with the Torlakson Whole Child Institute (TWCI) to host a middle school career exploration field trip at CAL FIRE’s Ione Training Center. This is the second collaboration between the two organizations, continuing the shared mission to spark early interest in career paths in the fire service that do not require a traditional college degree.

The Ione Training Center welcomed students from Magnolia Intermediate School in Grass Valley who participated in hands-on activities and interacted directly with CAL FIRE professionals from various fields, which included Fire Technology, Emergency Dispatch, Building Trades, and Natural Resource Management. Each activity offered practical insight into the skills, responsibilities, and training associated with each field. Throughout the day, additional CAL FIRE professionals, from administrative, culinary, heavy equipment mechanics, heavy equipment operators, and logistics, lead the groups, answered questions, and shared their experiences.

  7. “The Lost Bus” Torches the Screen With Tension

Earlier this week, we had the opportunity to watch The Lost Bus starring Matthew McConaughey and American Ferrera on Apple TV. This tension-packed film tells the harrowing story of a school bus driver, grade school teacher, and 22 elementary school students trying desperately to escape the 2018 Camp Fire that destroyed the City of Paradise, California.

The realism of the movie, including the immeasurable strength and tenacity of the wildfire, the valiant attempts by Cal Fire to get it under control, and the terrifying efforts to escape the rapid advance of flames and choking smoke by bus, car, or on foot, were simply spellbinding. Viewers will definitely be on the edge of they seats/sofas while viewing this memorable film.

It’s hard to fathom a wildfire that ignites at 6:15 a.m., reaches a city of 27,000 people (Paradise) located eight (8) miles away in two hours, and utterly torches it within four. One can only shake their head in awe (and fear) of the overarching power of Mother Nature when she’s been wronged by humanity’s disregard for the Earth.

As one who is in awe of the bravery of Smokejumpers, Hot Shot Crews, and other wildfire fighters, this film does a great job depicting the dangerous and deadly conditions they face on a regular basis. We owe them such an enormous debt of gratitude regardless of their place of birth for putting their lives on the line to protect us. It’s dedication like this and/or in service to our nation through the military, that should be rewarded and commended…not coldly tossed aside.

    Peace!

    RELEASE DATE: September 9, 2025

CALIFORNIA FIREFIGHTERS JOIN FORCES WITH UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA RESEARCHERS TO STUDY CANCER RISK

The study is supported by $9.7 million in funding from CAL FIRE and involves 3,500 firefighters from departments across California over a two-year period.

SACRAMENTO — The Governor's Office made the announcement today of a major new research effort led by the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and Davis (UC Davis), in collaboration with CAL FIRE, that is investigating how occupational exposures may increase cancer risk among California firefighters. The project, a sub-study of the California Firefighter Cancer Research Study (CAFF-CRS), is backed by nearly $9.7 million in funding from CAL FIRE and will include 3,500 firefighters from departments across the state over a two-year period.

The research team is guided by a firefighter advisory board to ensure the study remains grounded in real-world needs and priorities.

“This research underscores CAL FIRE’s commitment to protecting firefighter health through science, innovation, and partnership,” says CAL FIRE Director, Chief Joe Tyler.
