This year I read a book in Swedish every quarter and five books in translation. I read flash fiction, poetry, memoir, historical fiction, detective fiction, science fiction, at least one classic, essays, oral history, fantasy, realism and magical realism, children’s books and books on the craft of writing.

By my count I finished 34 books this year, not counting ones read with my kids. These are 4 of my favourites, in no particular order: a biography of eccentric mathematician Paul Erdos; a self contained SFF epic about the future of religion; a fascinating look at bird intelligence; and a moving Australian sci fi story of virtual reality and the gap between those who embrace it and those who reject it #BooksOf2023 #Bookstodon @bookstodon

Just saw someone on YouTube talking about how they've read over 200 books this year. They read the last Series of Unfortunate Events books and Lord of the Rings LAST WEEK. They felt they were being stagnant and lazy because they haven't read anything in a couple of days?!
What in the internalised capitalism is this? Why are we turning reading into a productivity thing? Why are we measuring our hobbies and setting ourselves KPIs??
I'm gonna take things at my own damn place when I'm enjoying myself, thank you very much!

This was the 46th of my #BooksReadIn2023 - an eye opener that I think I’ll need to reread (preferably in paper rather than ebook) before I really comprehend. It explores the history, philosophy and politics of money/debt/credit/markets/capitalism. Weighty content but well written and readable.
-
43rd of my #BooksOf2023 was a short ramble through the urban flora and fauna of the early 1970s, an easy read and really interesting.
-
My 41st #BooksReadIn2023 - while still wading through weightier tomes I wanted to read something quicker and easier… which it may be in some ways, but not others. Inspiring, depressing, exhausting… not as good as for example Rebirding but a grounding reminder of the need for action.

After giving up on several different books in succession, I decided something a bit lighter was in order for the 35th of my #BooksOf2023

#BooksOf2023 #19: Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. This was a great, uplifting story about the friendship between a septuagenarian and an octopus that reads like a Fredrik Backman novel.

#BooksOf2023 #18: The Happy Runner by Davis and Megan Roche. This was a great little book about being a happy runner. As someone who started running more recently, the book contained some good info that I hadn’t heard before.

@bookstadon #BooksOf2023 #17: Fixit by Joe Ide. The 6th book in the IQ mystery series pulled together lots of threads from the previous books, but the story plodded along slower that I would have liked. I’ll keep reading the series, but the first two books remain the best.

@bookstadon #BooksOf2023 #16: Robert E. Lee and Me by Ty Seidule. As someone born in the south and whose extended family still lives there, this book opened my eyes to some of the ways the “lost cause” is baked into southern culture. A must-read for anyone from the south or anyone who wants to learn more about the U.S.’s (particularly the South) continual struggle against racism.

@bookstadon #BooksOf2023 #15: Saving Democracy by @DavidPepper. This follow-up to his Laboratories of Autocracy, is more of a user’s manual for both small and large steps individuals can take to help save democracy in the US.
