Winter was hard on the blackberry thicket. Two goodly-sized trees crashed down on the canes, and then a late snow squashed them again. I've been cutting new trails in and pruning, trying to guide their comeback. Last summer was amazing -- I picked and froze pounds of berries -- but that same bounty may not happen this year. And there's still a pair of tall alder snags waiting to come down.

Say, if you havenโt had breakfast yet, or are hungry now, doesnโt this tub of berries look refreshing! I was among the first in line at the Banner UMC cafeteria when opened for the day at 7 am. I was on a mission to get a large coffee since Iโd spent the night in my sonโs ICU room.

I racked the blackberry melomel (mead) into a carboy. Since the fruit was in a bag this process just removes seeds which were the only thing left in the bag. I topped it up with 1 cup of water, 15 grams of bentonite, and less than 100 grams of honey. The top of the carboy volume is always deceiving.

On the bright side, while my planet bakes, my country slides daily into ever deeper authoritarianism and my state remains under constant threat of burning down, Infinite Berry Month continues.
4 more pounds today, for about 17 total so far. The freezer is filling up and I'm starting to give about half of each haul away now. It is my favorite thing about August by far.

BlackBerry harvest results in a drought year:
This is so disappointing. We usually get around 50 to 60 lb of blackberries every year. That carries us through the full year as we freeze them. This year we've got just under 24 lb. There are lots more on the bushes but they are hard and dry and not worth harvesting as they don't even taste very good. Not enough water. These were not really wild, as I did clear out the dead canes during the Spring to make picking them a little easier, but otherwise they have been sown wild and normally just grow on their own. I have never watered them. So I guess we're going to have to buy some during the year for our breakfasts.
I'm sure this will be reflective of the fruit crops all around us. This bodes ill for the price of fruit during the coming year. Sigh.

Four more pounds of berries for the freezer, the canner and me. We've hit that part of blackberry season where the limiting factor is my time and energy. The berries are functionally infinite.

After a year of eating them fresh and frozen, and making jam and jelly, it's time to finish off the last of the 2024 blackberries and make room for the new batch starting to come in.
That means a few cans of blackberry syrup, enough to top months of ice creams, yogurts and other treats.

My doctor and nurse came to the house for my primary care medical appointment. We let them pick #blackberries after they are done. Matter-of-fact, this patch was planted especially for visitors like them. Penny gave them each baggies and they got a load full each!
On a side note, since 2013, most of my primary care is done in my home, including radiology, ultrasounds, lab work, heart echo, spinal pump refills, etc. Most recently, they started an "emergency triage unit" that takes the place of going to an ER for non-life threatening emergencies that might require "ER care."

August is a mixed blessing for me. On one hand, hot. I don't like hot. I also don't like being constantly afraid my state will burn down.
On the other hand, it's blackberry season. I picked my first today.
For the next month or so, picking, eating, canning and freezing berries will be about 40% of my personality. Be warned.

Fruit from the garden and homemade wine update. We've taken the blackberry wine off the fruit today, strained it all through muslin, and decanted into a demijohn. That will free up equipment so we can start the raspberry wine off tomorrow. Next will be the whiskey and brandy liqueurs, then we'll see how much more there is in the harvest as to whether we go for a mixed fruit wine or some food options.

Suddenly it is "that" season.
I go out looking completely normal - or normal for me. anyway - yet, on the way back, my fingers are become reddened in response to a host of wanton, beckoning berries. Stray pips, or not yet ripened red cells, throb annoyingly from the spaces they have discovered, and slid inside between my teeth. And also, because the best berries are always nearest to the sharpest thorns, my fingers, too, are tingling

I'll be able to forage #blackberries soon! Maybe next week... maybe a couple weeks after. There are two varieties in my area, and the climbing one (smaller bushes, harder to forage more than a handful) are wonderful. The larger variety (stands tall all year) still looks green.

Gardening update. Current estimate is around 700 blackberries on the bramble with plenty of new flowers forming and opening now so more to come, but excitingly - you've got to take your excitement however you can - the first one has started to get some colour in it now.

The blackberries are starting to bloom and having the same issues with the leaves turning white but this year I spotted the problem before they probably all flew off. Leafhoppers! They got a soapy bath today. They were also on the rose bushes so those got a soapy spray too.

Our quest for Englandโs sweetest wild fruit led us to our local park in Banstead, Surrey, a small patch of green which, between August and October, would burst with swollen blackberries. Under strict instructions, Iโd carefully manoeuvre my way around the thick, sharp brambles, my eyes scanning for the darkest and shiniest berries of them all. My grandmother had learned from her mother โ who, as a young evacuee during World War Two, would forage wild fruits and plants as a supplement to the meagre food rations โ that the plumper, darker berries were the sweetest. Those juicy crimson-purple morsels would often be turned into blackberry crumble, the perfect sweet finish to a Sunday roast dinner."

The harvest, during the period the sun passes overhead at this location, which was August 17, 2024.
Picked some more tomatillo up off the ground, half ended up getting culled. The last picked blackberries, some which were very soft. 7 cucumbers, 1 straight-neck yellow summer squash (needs a longer name), and about 10 flamme tomatoes.
