#LifecyclesProjectSociety #FruitTreeProject Update.

This year, we have harvested over 63,000 lbs of fruit! Of that, almost 32,000 lbs of Grade A fruit has been donated to the community, to over 70 community service agencies throughout the Greater Victoria Area. Our tree stewards have kept 4,500 lbs, and our amazing team of 191 Harvest Leads and Pickers have taken 13,000 lbs home. 

What about the other 13,500 lbs you ask? 

Made up of B-Grade, we have processed just over 7500 lbs into juice and jam. Some of the fruit is always C-Grade (compost). To date, we have composted just under 6000 lbs of fruit - while some of this has gone to our friends at Community Composting, the vast majority has gone to a local pig farmer.

We are proud to say no fruit has gone into the landfill!

Roughleaf Dogwood (Cornus drummondii), a common shrub #native to the central US that can grow from seed or from root sprouts. The abundant fruits in late summer/early autumn are a terrific source of carbohydrates for migrating #birds seeking #fruits to help fatten up for #migration. Today I noticed a #SummerTanager using its #hover #gleaning behavior to pluck the fruits. That's one more satisfied customer, bulking up for its impending sojourn to #Peru!

Summer #gleaning harvest I’m trying to fit in freezer, #gardening fam: red currants, black currants, acorn squash, pesto (thaw, add Parmesan), apple and pear pie filling. Good year!

It’s apple season! 🍎 Transition Chesterfield's Abundance project collects unwanted apples from gardens across their community.

Then volunteers juices, stores and donates them to make sure they are eaten and enjoyed.

Fresh, local food freely shared – their Apple Day is this Saturday.

The Gleaning Cornwall Network harvests surplus produce and through over 60 food banks, community kitchens and community larders across Cornwall and west Devon, helps feed around 6,000 people in need each week.
