  1. Sorting out the race files for the first British Human Power Club meet of the 2026 season at Hillingdon Cycle Circuit on Saturday. Good to see a decent number of arm-powered entries, and people who haven't raced with us before.

Hopefully it'll stay dry enough that I don't end up riding blind and come off the track at a random tangent like I did last time...

  2. I've dusted off the Official Jam-Filled Babbage Engine, blatted the Windows updates, and am trying to remember how the #BHPC race timing system works...

Unofficial session at Derby Velodrome on Sunday. Should be interesting, though the wrong kind of interesting for me after losing all my strength to a week of gastroenteritis.

  3. Excellent video (with nostril-vision, data and commentary) by the #BHPC's Russell Bridge on his final attempt to beat the British speed record in his streamliner SeventySeven at the #WHPSC in Battle Mountain this year...

  7. In #HPV news, this amazing video of Yesterday's attempt by the #BHPC's Russell Bridge to set a new British record at the World Human Powered Speed Challenge currently taking place at Battle Mountain, Nevada.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsQWaNPOec4

The potatovision is a capture from his forward vision camera (the SeventySeven has no windscreen). There's some aliasing he doesn't get on his screen, but that's basically his entire view of the road. The nostril-cam is unflattering, but gives a whole new perspective on what it's like inside the bike.

Fingers crossed for another wind-legal run at some point.

  8. Well the 3-hour race was more than a little Type 2 Fun. Much more confident in crosswind, though it still makes cornering unpredictable.

    Radio mostly worked.

Yesterday I bagged a Strava QOM and set a new V(max) of ~37 mph, which I'm pleased with. Also, at no point during the weekend did I crash into a horse. Or anything else, for that matter.

With my time team hat on: Results will take a while, due to organisational chaos, a number of dodgy timing tags, and the afore-mentioned crosswind spontaneously misaligning important parts of the timing system...

  9. #BHPC double-bill at Darley Moor tomorrow. Looks like one day of decent weather, and one day of scorchio with hairdrier crosswind on the straight. Some maniac has decided we're going to do a succession of 5-lap races on Sunday, and a 3-hour endurance race on Monday...

It'll be interesting to see how I cope with a 3-hour race in the heat. Normally I do well at those on account of superior bladder control, but I'm not exactly Audax-fit at the moment, and I don't think I've done more than 90 minutes in the Notso.

I do at least have a working hydration bag now. And a Garmin mount somewhere in the vicinity of my shins (I may or may not be able to actually read the screen from there, but at least it should get a decent GPS signal for track logging). And I did a last-minute lash-up of a mounting for the Official Time Team Race Radio™ and fabricobbled
[1] a PTT button on the handlebar and an amplifier that goes to 11 driving strategically places squeakers (previous test with the earbud revealed I can't hear speech over the drivetrain noise) which may or may not actually work...

[1] Using suboptimal tools because I left all my drills and cable ties in the new house.

  10. Loitering within tent near Beverley, for the weekend's #BHPC events at Hull. The weather is currently lovely. Currently. There are weather warnings for thunderstorms tomorrow... #WhatCouldPossiblyGoWrong

  11. All set for the camping at York Cycle Rally and #BHPC meet this weekend. In which we expect the full gamut of British weather, from 'hairdrier' through 'downpour' to 'should have brought my Big Coat'.

  12. Day 1 of #BHPC racing at Rhyl. Underwhelming performance, as I was concentrating on not crashing in the gusting wind. The track is entirely composed of swooping corners, so no real opportunity to spool it up beyond about 25mph without peril.

Meanwhile the timing tent did not blow away, and the laptop didn't get blown into
    @[email protected]'s lap.

Timing disaster averted thanks to people packing important cables in the wrong places after the last race (so they weren't in the crate that got forgotten), and me having a lightweight racing multimeter in my bag when the Anna Daptor that connects the inverter that powers the system to Natalya's trike battery self-destructed.

  13. Just finished sorting out the race files for the #BHPC event at #Bath #OddDown cycle circuit on Sunday. In which the weather threatens to be decent, and I will try really hard not to crash the Notso on the horrible bottom corner (and proceed around the hairpin at slightly above walking pace, no doubt).

  19. 'Any launch that you can ride away from...'

I'd say that was a decent first attempt at riding Notso with the lid on, given the gusting crosswind. The restricted view of the horizon makes balancing weird.

  21. First day of #BHPC racing at Rhyl went well, if you ignore the incessant wind. Tomorrow threatens to up the game with precipitation...

  22. Staying at MIL's static caravan in Anglesey for the #BHPC event at Rhyl this weekend. Stupid traffic on the way out of the Wet Midlands meant the journey took 5 hours. Then the stupid caravan park didn't have our registration number in its ANPR system, which would be fine if anyone answered the intercom. Another user let us tailgate them before I'd finished making a fake numberplate out of paper and marker pen. Curious to know if it would have worked...

  23. Still time to register for the #BHPC racing at Rhyl this weekend. I've just created the race files: Back to less than 100 riders, the regular BHPC logo and no NatCode field in the sign-on sheet.

Looks like we might get some dry weather. Crosswinds on Prostate Corner are of course guaranteed.

(Anyone who removed their regular BHPC timing tags to make room for the
#whpvc2024 ones and who hasn't asked for new ones at registration, please let me know and I'll write some new ones.)

  28. In other news, still a couple more days before the close of registrations for the #WHPVA championships. Anyone over the age of 12 on anything human-powered can take part. Unfortunately, the camping pitches have now sold out, and late registrations aren't guaranteed a T-shirt (the order has now gone to the printers).

    https://wc2024.bhpc.org.uk/

We currently have 129 registered riders, which makes this a bigger event than when the
#BHPC last hosted it in 2018. I've cleaned the chain on the Red Baron, and I'm starting to look at weather forecasts...

  32. Another successful day of #BHPC racing at #Hillingdon. We actually ran to time, which is almost unheard of.

The suicide-rabbit that tried to take me out on the bottom corner is disqualified for poor race etiquette, and disqualified again for not being human-powered.

  33. A good, if tiring, day #BHPC racing at Redbridge. I think I prefer that circuit to Gravesend. Hilly but without the dubious corners.

    Hillingdon tomorrow...

  34. Tomorrow's side-quest from WC2024 organising is processing registrations for the #BHPC races at #Redbridge and #Hillingdon this weekend. Registrations close tomorrow morning, so there's still time to get an entry in...

  37. PSA before I go away for the weekend:

Medium-rate registration for the 2024 Human Powered Vehicle World Championship, at Betteshanger Park in Kent, UK on 16-18 of August, closes on Monday (after which prices go up, and you won't get a T-shirt).

Juniors (12-16) are half-price, and camping is available on site. Any kind of rider (you don't have to be an athlete) on any kind of human-powered vehicle (as long as it has a brake and no dangerous sharp bits) can take part. Spectators are welcome, free of charge.

We currently have 112 riders registered, but I'd really like to see more Women and Juniors on the list.

    Will be staffing the
