  1. Registrations are now open for the next British Human Power Club race meet at Colchester Sports Park on the 9th of August. Nice smooth tarmac, good sightlines and sensible* corners make it the opposite of last weekend's twisty silliness at Hereford and Evesham. I'm also hoping that August means it won't be stupidly cold, like it was when we last went there in 2022 and I had to un-jam my chain with frozen fingers.

    * For certain values of sensible: There's a steep embankment on the outside of the hairpin to keep things interesting if you overcook it.

  2. Fuel Subsidy Released To Over 2,000 Tricycle And PUJ Drivers In Las Piñas City

Recently in Las Piñas City, more than two thousand drivers of tricycles and public utility jeepneys (PUJs) received P5,000 each in fuel subsidy during the payout at Aguilar Sports Complex monitored by local officials, according to the City Government’s announcement.

To put things in perspective, posted below is the entire social media announcement (translated from Tagalog) of the City Government. Some parts in boldface…

For those who were not able to claim their subsidy, the Special Fuel Subsidy Payout was held at Aguilar Sports Complex where almost 2,300 Tricycle and PUJ drivers personally received P5,000.

With the cooperation of DSWD-NCR and CSWDO headed by Ms. Lowefe Romulo, the distribution of relief was smooth, fast and organized inside a comfortable and cold venue. Like the previous payout, there is still a help desk to respond to some questions and problems drivers have experienced in relation to their documents.

In this time when oil and gasoline prices are still very high, the city government, under the leadership of Mayor April Aguilar, is ensuring that every registered driver will be provided and will receive the assistance intended for them.

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: If you are a resident of Las Piñas City, what is your reaction to this development? Do you consider P5,000 sufficient as a fuel subsidy for the tricycle and PUJ drivers of the city?

He wanted to go outside & ride, after eating.

  12. To think that we had come this far in the meeting without having given any attention to the drawings in the book. Impossible to imagine it was not mentioned. But there it is, a juvenile ’zilla on a tricycle. And it is carrying a backpack. The name is misspelled, an unforgivable error for any artist that strays this far into the woods. Do not send me any more mail about this. And let us quietly celebrate the unbothered childhood the movie Godzillæ never had an opportunity to experience. #meeting #notes #godzilla #tricycle

  14. The 2026 British Human Power Club race meet calendar is now complete:

    https://www.bhpc.org.uk/events/2026-races/

Note that due to the high entry fee and limited numbers the Derby Velodrome event is unofficial, and will not earn championship points. It's a rare opportunity to ride something other than a conventional track bike on an indoor velodrome.

After the popularity of the (narrow, twisty) track at Hereford, we're doing a double-bill with the similar track at Evesham. Should be good fun for the un-faired and multitrack riders.

And we've managed to secure exclusive use of the (eyewateringly expensive) Betteshanger Park track for a weekend in September. Not a full World Championships, but we hope that some riders from continental Europe will take the opportunity to come over to enjoy the track, which with its long swooping curves and good sight-lines is well suited to faster machines.

  16. 🤡 Ah yes, the timeless question: when would you ever want bubblesort? Maybe when you're feeling nostalgic for the days when dial-up was a groundbreaking #technology. 📞💾 It's like asking when you'd want to use a #tricycle in a Tour de France—adorable, sure, but utterly pointless. 🚴‍♂️💨

  18. This evening I've made two test pieces of composite sandwich material for the #tricycle project, one flax fibre/balsa core, one carbon fibre/nomex core.

    Lessons:
    1. You can't really do this without vacuum bagging: the carbon sample failed structurally because of air gaps between the fibre and the core;
    2. Flax fibre wicks up a lot more resin than carbon, resulting in a sample which is almost twice as heavy;
    3. The flax/balsa sample is subjectively impressively strong.

  20. I've just bought test materials to evaluate the relative strengths of a flax/balsa sandwich composite versus a carbon/Nomex (aramid) sandwich composite.

Yes, I know the carbon/Nomex will be stronger, but would the flax/balsa be strong enough for my #Tricycle project?

  22. The first actual physical part for my #Tricycle project has arrived today. This is an axle — actually a Cannondale Lefty axle — and it's nominally the front axle, although it doesn't really matter which axle it ends up being because they will all be identical.

  24. @LovesTha Also, the #Tricycle isn't intended as a recreational vehicle: it's primarily a utility vehicle, and primarily a winter utility vehicle. I want something in which I can reliably fetch my shopping home from town, ten miles away, in filthy weather -- in wind, in rain, in sleet and hail. As I age, as my balance continues to decline.

I think optimum is pretty damned important!

  26. @LovesTha if I'm investing all the spare cash I have for a year in a #Tricycle, it needs to be as comfortable and as efficient as possible, and it's worth investing a bit in the ergonomic prototype to make sure that will be so.

  30. I'm still learning #OpenSCAD. This part, the lower knuckle for the four-bar linkage of the #Tricycle, isn't as smooth and aerodynamic as I'd like. But it's good enough, certainly for now.

The blue colour is just to make it easier to work with; the finished part will probably be carbon fibre, and black.

  32. Embeddable Common Lisp is potentially another option but so far I have not found an i2c library for it.

    ecl.common-lisp.dev/

Stretch goals for this are for the device also to handle a rear-view video camera so that it can act as a 'mirror' to see traffic behind the #tricycle, to interface with the motor controller, and to sense torque or chain tension so that the motor only runs while the rider is pedalling.

Nothing happens very fast on a pedal cycle, so a 10Hz update cycle is adequate

  34. OK, a sidequest on the #tricycle project: I'm going to have to do data capture, storage and display. I need to log speed, cadence, battery voltage, and some indicator of power consumption. I need to display at least speed, cadence, and projected range. I can do speed and cadence off hall effect sensors. I want to use #Lisp. uLisp will run on a Raspberry Pi Pico, and has built in functions to read i2c.

    ulisp.com/show?1EK4

Does that sound a reasonable place to start?

  36. @weezmgk I know. But the idea behind this design is to have a very compact drive train. In addition, the tadpole configuration puts the twin front wheels into otherwise clean air, which is a significant aerodynamic cost.

All engineering choices are tradeoffs. I wrote about my choices, and the reasons for them, in my first essay on the #Tricycle project, which is here:

  38. So, at last I have a rendering of the #Tricycle which includes a (so far fairly crude) model of the hull. This makes the whole thing much easier to visualise. Progress is being made.

I'd like to get the CAD model a little more complete, but actually this is enough to move onto an ergonomic prototype.

I'm about to start buying actual parts for this damn thing. It may actually happen.

  41. Progress on the #tricycle project is mainly in thinking about and working on the subframe. One thing that I'm sure is the right decision is to give the subframe a flat mounting flange, which will bolt down onto a matching pedestal within the hull. This will make the subframe easier to fabricate, and easier to mount/dismount - which I think will be needed for any work on the wheel or tyre.

What isn't decided is aluminium or carbon.
