Today's poem:
Hymn to Asclepius
- by HomerI begin to sing of Asclepius, son of Apollo and healer
of sicknesses. In the Dotian plain fair Coronis, daughter of
King Phlegyas, bare him, a great joy to men, a soother of cruel
pangs. And so hail to you, lord: in my song I make my prayer to
thee! -

Two engraved portal remains on opposite sides of a main street in the ruins of the Ancient Greek city of #Ephesus (now in #Turkey ), appear to mark locations of a hospital (Rod of #Asclepius shown) and an #alchemist. (Can anyone interpret the imagery?)
The feral cats 🐈 favor the former. Perhaps because their ancestors were fed amputated limbs and excised organs at the hospital? #caturday #histodons

These two engraved ‘advertisements’ on opposite sides of a main street in the Ancient Greek ruins of #Ephesus (now in #Turkey ) appear to indicate locations of physicians and alchemists, respectively.
Note that it is the Rod of #Asclepius - with a single snake - marking the physician’s location. 👉 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rod_of_Asclepius
Our guide noted that the #Caduceus, which is favored by #American for-profit hospitals, has TWO snakes because “it costs twice as much!” 😂 ✅ #alchemy

Here's a Rod of Aesculapius, displayed on the facade of the old Barber Surgeons Hall in Newcastle upon Tyne, built in 1851. Aesculapius was the Greek god of medicine (as Asclepius), imported by the Romans during a plague epidemic in 292 BC. Aesculapius is associated with snakes, which represent healing. I have a whole Fabulous Folklore episode about him!

TIL a Greek origin myth for #garlic.
"In Greek #mythology, Zeus’s [edit— Apollon’s] son #Asclepius became so skilled at #herbal remedies that he was believe to even raise the dead. This angered Hades and so Zeus killed Asclepius with a lightening bolt and sent the rains to drown his writings on immortality. The parchment he was writing on soaked into the earth, thus becoming garlic: immortal gift of the fallen Asclepius."
