Tube Map of Queer Authors

Look what a UK friend pointed out to me the other day (thanks, Linda!): a Tube Map of Queer Authors put together by the Barbican & Community Libraries, London.

As usual, they’ve mischaracterised me/my work—I should be on a nexus point between the red, yellow, green, and blue lines—and if I had to be connected to only one line, it should be the red one—after all, I’ve written many more non-SFF novels than SFF. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to distance myself from SFF—I love SFF!—but it’s only part of what I do. Having said that, look at where SFF is placed—the smallest line, looped and self-contained, as though SFF has no influence on (or is influenced by) any other literature. Always relegated to the back corner of the store… Or, well, fuck it, no. Let say sui generis (if a whole genre can be singular).

But, hey, it’s a cool map. And I can’t blame the map makers, really—I mean every critic/reviewer and her mother gets confused about what I write; it’s why I hired publicists last year. Sadly, not even they could turn that liner, steaming majestically ahead on its own course 🙄 Oh, well.

As I say, though, still cool: filling the sandwich of Arthur C. Clarke and Octavia Butler. And hey, how could one possibly complain about being on the bottom line of everything, alongside Sappho??

#Anyte of Tegea (#Greece: early 3rd century BC) was an Arcadian poet. She is named as one of the nine outstanding women poets of antiquity by Antipater of Thessalonica in the Palatine Anthology.

No reliable information about her life survives, and she can only be approximately dated by the style of her work. She was known for her #epigrams, and she introduced rural themes to the genre.

Only one story about Anyte's life is preserved. #Pausanias claims that Anyte was once visited by the god #Asclepius while she was asleep, and told to go to Naupactus to visit a certain blind man there. On doing so, the man was cured, and he built a temple to Asclepius.

Though so little is known about Anyte's life, more of her #poetry survives than any other ancient #Greek woman, with the exception of #Sappho.

Personal note: Joanne's 'Celebrating Women' posts never fail to send me down *multiple* rabbit holes, and this one was a veritable warren of warrens! 😄 But interesting!

Over on Insta, there’s this lovely rainbowy" art challenge called "Hue Years Resolution". Since it’s the first time in ages I’ve actually made something creative again I wanted to share it here too. I participated with "hidden poems" also known as "Blackout poetry". In German I named them "Versteckte Verse". Annnnnyhow, here goes the first one in red:

"Sappho" fresco/Portrait of a Young Woman with Stylus, 50 - 79 CE, Pompeii

The "Sappho" fresco is a 1st-century AD painting from Pompeii depicting a young woman holding a writing tablet and stylus, symbols of literacy and education in Roman society. Though 19th-century scholars speculated it portrayed the Greek poet Sappho, modern scholars believe it’s simply an upper-class Pompeiian woman. Discovered in 1760, the fresco is now housed at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples and notably inspired Chinese poet Shao Xunmei to take up poetry after he saw it in the early 1920s.
