  1. At #AHA23, #SimonSchuster generously handed out a few free copies of this new book about #enslaved #African people and their contributions to expanding and enlarging "the very concept of American freedom". Looking forward to digging in and learnng from this 800+ page tome. #BlackHistory #AfricanHistory #histodons

  2. Outgoing AHA president James Sweet argues that attempts to make history an instrument and accoutrement of justice risk, “replacing one set of myths and lies with another.” In fact #HistoricalJustice is perfectly compatible w rigorous social science. #histodons #aha23

  3. Enough with the circular firing squads. Presentism and political advocacy don’t threaten the historical profession, but “alternative facts” and educational “gag laws” sure do. #aha23 #histodons #history #fascism #democracy nytimes.com/2023/01/08/arts/am

  4. If you want to understand the incredible disjuncture between the old guard of historians and those on the front lines seriously seeking to stop the collapse of the profession, read this account of outgoing AHA president James Sweet's speech nytimes.com/2023/01/08/arts/am

    and then @erin_bartram's talk

Many (not all) tenured senior profs are apparently content to keep debating methodology while the profession burns. It isn't just professionally irresponsible; it's unethical. The luxury of being able to have those debates is enabled by inequitable labor conditions and a failure to take responsibility for training grad students for nonexistent jobs.

  5. NetWorkLab’s call-for-participation is now open! Join us for this #NEH-funded professional development opportunity and improve your remote collaboration and facilitation skills! (Fully online and hosted by Greenhouse Studios at #UConn)

  11. Heeeyyy, sooooo, SUPER cool panel today (full disclosure: I'm on it) on Maritime Microhistory and Public History: Global Perspectives, with Robert Harms, Boyd Cothran, Phillip Reid, Adrian Shubert, and me! Promise you, it'll be fun #AHA23

  13. So many good takeaways from the first, here are just a few:

Carrie Gibson: “Storytelling anticipates what our brains expect”
Amy Stanley: History shelves looking like “United States, Men, War” is a self-fulfilling prophecy, and not reflective of the interests that clearly drive historical fiction, memoirs, and biographies
Kendra Tyra Field: “There is a great potential for collaboration in writing family histories”

  14. Excited for the second round of Historians as Storytellers. Made sure to stake out a good spot this time- the first session filled up (and then some!) #aha23

  15. Reports have reached me that my book is having a grand old time at the #AHA23 #AHA2023, and is enjoying excellent company at the UC Press booth 🥳

  16. #aha23 Interested in NEH funding programs and initiatives? Join us in #S196, "What’s New at the National Endowment for the Humanities for 2023", today from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm in the Marriott Room 404 (4th Floor).

And you can pick up a copy of
Humanities magazine or an NEH sticker for your laptop.

  17. #aha23 #s143 And finally Kathryn Ostrofsky on Bunk History-- "capturing the ambient history of today"- adding 8 or 9 pieces per day to document how history is talked about today. Appreciate the combination of human and algorithmic interventions.

  18. #aha23 #S143 First up is Alan Gevinson from Library of Congress and Brenna Greer from Wellesley College discussing the American Archive of Public Broadcasting.

In particular, Greer is discussing her teaching with the AAPB.

(Love this deep, rich archive -- that has received NEH funding)

  19. Starting this morning at #aha23 with #S143 "Using Digital Archives for Teaching, Research, and Public Engagement", chaired
    Ed Ayers

-- Ayers reminds us that the "Valley of the Shadow" Digital Project is now 30 years old.

  20. I probably follow more people on historians.social than any other server. But I, myself, am on hcommons.social.

I love this about #Mastodon. I get the disciplinary content I want in my home feed and closely related serendipitous discovery in my local feed. The stuff in my home feed is right on the nose. The stuff in my local feed pulls me in new directions. The stuff from #aha23 in my home feed is immediately relevant. The stuff from #MLA23 in my local feed is inspiring.

    So cool.

  21. Grateful to the Chinese Historians in the United States for this book award! 謝謝各位老師!

  22. new favorite genre of post is historians being chuffed at seeing their first book out at #aha23 :) Can't wait for the day it's me!

  23. I am very happy that my book was the winner of the Warren Dean Memorial Prize awarded by the Conference on Latin American History (CLAH) as the most significant work on the history of Brazil in 2022.

  24. I’ll be here for another 45 minutes! Who’s thirsty and and wants free H-Net swag? #AHA23 Marriott bar.

  25. #aha23 Listening to #s115, the Digital Projects Showcase, hosted by @jmcclurken .

Glad to see so many NEH-funded projects being demo-ed (or projects using NEH-funded digitized primary sources!)

How do I know this? By searching the NEH Database of Funded Projects.

  31. #AHA23 grad students and other folks looking to learn more about H-Net, I’ll be hanging out in the bar off the lobby of the Marriott today between 5-6:30. Stop by and say hello, I’ll buy you a round.

  32. Three years ago, we launched the Sourcery project at AHA 2020 in New York. COVID-19 stymied our plans, as it did so many #research visits to #archives. But it also gave us an opportunity to take more seriously our archivist colleagues' needs and concerns when it comes to the challenges and opportunities of remote access to archives.

We spent the pandemic listening to and working with archivists. The result is a fully refactored application that will support both sides of the remote document request workflow -- that of the researcher AND the archivist.

Now at #AHA23, we're pleased to announce that #Sourcery will reopen on March 1st as a one-stop destination for requesting document scans from across the U.S.

  38. #AHA23 #S82 Another useful starting point resource for thinking about accessibility for digital projects is from Digital.gov

    digital.gov/resources/introduc

  39. #AHA23 #S82 GMU's Mills Kelly would like funding agencies, including NEH, to start requiring separate accessibility plans as part of their applications (much like a separate data management plan). Definitely something to consider.

I note that NEH's Office of Digital Humanities does ask applicants to address accessibility for different audiences in their application narrative.
