  1. Today's gardening: hiding from wind driven rain showers in the barn. Between sunny spells.

  2. After the rain came the sun and a wet stork patrolling our garden.

Perhaps thats why we never see any slugs?

  7. Got some trouble with the hay baroness, who used to mow our meadow for the price of taking the hay. Now she reneged on the deal and wants money as well as the hay. Not sure how much yet, she's "calculating".

    Meanwhile I'm calculating our alternatives:

    1. Buy a flail mulcher for the tractor and do it ourselves. Hay is wasted but we're not dependent on someone else. Initial cost, but gain a mulcher.

    2. Pay someone to cut, turn and bale the hay, then sell the bales ourselves. Depending on prices, we may make money or lose it and end up with a bunch of tractor eggs sitting around. Risky.

    3. Find someone else who will accept the original deal and mow for the hay, preferably someone nice and local. We'll ask around a bit.

Prefer 3 because no work for me.

  8. Doing my best @krahabors impression today.

Before that I have also taken three deep breaths and then said "#knirps, I am your father" to him, as is mandatory for any dad wearing a filter mask. I know the rules.

  13. Finished digging the compost over today. Got another big tub of sifted compost for the rest of the garden that is still to be planted (its just getting warm enough for those plants).

Also under and next to the compost pile, two weird concrete Tetris pieces, a big pile of fly ash bricks and this piece of rather nice and hardly rusty 100mm steel box section 🤩

And a lot of hand picking pieces of rope, foil, wire, a swing arm from some vehicle, rubber hoses/belts and all kinds of uncompostable junk someone had left in there.

  18. Counted three baby storks today. It was a warm day with good thermals, so other storks were soaring high in the sky. One descended and took a few swoops at our nest but was chased off by one of our adult storks.

This is a regular occurence on warm days where the sun heating up the fields produces updrafts that the clever birds use to ascend without expending energy.

That's how they can migrate so far and why they avoid crossing oceans (they cross only at the narrow straits of Gibraltar and the Bosporus).

  23. New spade put to the test. Planted a blueberry bush in the garden, moved a spruce seedling from a hopeless spot by the forest road to my little tree school row and two more maple seedling to the backyard.

The little spruce seedlings are really hard to spot as the grass is much taller than them now. I knew there were several in that area but only found one.

The maples seem to reliably grow their taproot uphill, so when they sprout on a slope its easy to dig them out without severing it. The leaves are easy to spot, too.

  28. Stork is keeping an eye on the situation in the eastern skies.

There's two hatchlings in the nest now and when its quiet we can hear them gently clapping with their little beaks.

  29. Popped the two leaky tyres off the lawnmownster and patched them.

Patched a crack in the sidewall, probably from some metal junk. Its at the curvature and can't really patch it from the inside, so outside it is.

And one from a thorn in the rear tyre tread. Drilled up the hole, cut a sliver from an old inner tube, folded it in half and jammed it in with a screwdriver and some vulcan sweat.

Both not leaking now, but time will tell after some use.
