RPGaDAY2025 – Day 16 – Overcome
What’s #RPGaDAY2025 ? See the details here.
Day 16 – Overcome
For this one, I’ll discuss methods of overcoming one of the greatest problems facing humanity today – the near illegibility of the challenge dice for Modiphius’ 2d20 games, specifically the Conan game.
What are challenge dice?
2d20 is the house system for many RPGS from Modiphius – Conan, John Carter of Mars, Fallout, etc. The 2d20 system uses d20s for most tasks, but for damage and other results many 2d20 games use challenge (or combat) dice. A Challenge die is a six-sided die that can return one of the following results: 1, 2, blank, or Effect.
You can of course use a regular six-sided dice, but custom challenge dice make the game flow a lot more smoothly. Thankfully, Modiphius produces custom dice sets for all of their games.
So what’s the problem? The problem is that Modiphius over-designed them a bit. The Conan dice look like crumbling stone. The Star Trek adventure dice (1st Edition only) are star-speckled. They look good, but in a fast-paced game they’re a little hard to read.
Challenge dice for Conan and Star Trek Adventures (STA only uses them for 1st edition)Suggested Fixes
Asking around on and offline, it’s been suggested to me I could use some of the challenge dice for other games, John Carter of Mars specifically. This will work, but buying a lot of these for all of the players can get a little pricey.
My Ugly Solution
My current idea is using some cheap blank six-sided dice and making my own legible challenge dice. I used my Silhouette paper cutter to make some templates, and drew the appropriate symbols on the dice with a black sharpie.
It’s far from perfect. There’s a bit of smearing and I’m not sure how long they’ll last. Next time I’ll try a different paint, and perhaps use some kind of varnish.
Messy but usable. -
Hey #ttrpg community, does #Modiphius have a "DM's Guild"/"Storyteller's Vault" style place/source for #2d20 fan creations? Or even such a source for individual games?

In the past month or so I've picked up the #Fallout #TTRPG and #StarTrekAdventures 2e. Last night, I pulled the trigger and bought the core book for the #JohnCarter core book as well, and today I grabbed the free #2d20 #SRD from DriveThru.
I might be a bit enthusiastic about the system.

I’m preparing for an #AchtungCthulhu #2d20 campaign by building an #obsidian vault with useful information. In part to reduce page flipping, but also because I add my own rules, clarifications, and additional information. #ttrpg

I made this players’ aid for Momentum Spends in #achtungcthulhu #2d20. It might be useful to others as well.

I love #DeltaGreen as a #ttrpg setting and framework, but (and I apologize to all I offend), I think the BRP system, whether in #CallOfCthulhu or its Delta Green variant, is inexcusably outdated and lifeless and only considered a classic because it’s sometimes simple enough that you can basically ignore it during play.
So… I’m considering running an upcoming short campaign with #2d20 to test that system, and I’m trying to figure out how to tweak #AchtungCthulhu to be less heroic and more grim.

All that being said, these just arrived at work, so I support the tradition.

Putting together a Shadows of Atlantis 2d20 Achtung! Cthulhu group. If you’re down to punch Nazis and Cthulhu in the same night , hit me up.
