  1. DiffusionGemma from Google DeepMind

One of the most interesting new models this year is DiffusionGemma, a Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) model from Google DeepMind. While its architecture isn't well-supported by all engines yet, variants currently work on Ollama and LM Studio.

While diffusiongemma-26B-A4B-it lacks some of the features of other Gemma 4 models, it is blazingly fast. It activates only 4 billion of its 26 billion parameters at a time, which is a now-common technique for speeding up processing on local systems, and its mixture-of-experts architecture easily supports 8 experts on higher-end consumer grade hardware. However, what really sets DiffusionGemma apart is that instead of using standard autoregression for inference, which works token-by-token, it borrows a technique from image-generating models to iteratively refine blocks of tokens in parallel for increased performance.

Autoregression is a type of sequential processing where the model looks backwards at recently generated tokens to create the next set. In contrast, discrete diffusion models iteratively add and remove tokens from each block in a non-linear way. The result is not only a noticeable increase in processing speed, but also in more dynamic and creative output even at more rigorous instruction-following temperatures.

In contrast to models that can generate tens or hundreds of tokens per second on consumer-grade hardware, DiffusionGemma can churn out over 1,000 tokens-per-second on the same hardware. Nothing in life is free, though; DiffusionGemma trades a slight reduction in accuracy (roughly 5-15% on most benchmarks compared to other Gemma 4 models) for much lower latency and a massive increase in tokens-per-second. For tasks where speed and creative output matter most, this is a viable trade-off.

As an open-weight model released under the Apache 2.0 open-source license, DiffusionGemma is a great candidate for further research and post-training. As an excellent example of the rapid advancements in AI and the ability of smaller language models to compete with frontier models for various use cases, I highly recommend giving DiffusionGemma a try.

  2. AI Governance Fails without Auditability

Experts in #cybersecurity know that real security comes from end-to-end traceability of auditable artifacts. By extension, auditability requires transparency and independent verification of the systems being audited.

With the rise of #agentic_AI, many non-experts are touting the "safety" they feel with AI agents that have been given what they believe are clear instructions that will be followed by the agents. Without fear-mongering, be aware that #AI_governance fails without auditability because:

    1. Many frontier-class agents are aligned to the SaaS providers, not to you.
    2. None of the frontiers model providers offer real traceability, transparency, or data provenance to end users (meaning you).
    3. You're trusting the agent to do what you've told it, or not to do something you've prohibited, but you can't actually audit an agentic system you don't fully control or verify what it's doing under the hood.

Agentic AI can be useful, but always remember Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? applies. Think about how systems fail, then ask yourself "Who guards the guards?" within your AI implementation. Once you do that, it's painfully self-evident that expecting any #AI_agent or #AI_model to audit itself is a #data_breach waiting to happen.

The solution you implement is fundamentally less important than asking the right questions in the first place. Asking those types of questions is still a human job, and will remain so for a long time to come.

  5. Attorney General Todd Blanche says there's a "misperception that there's this separation and independence between the Department of Justice and the White House."

    "I work for President Trump."

"The U.S. Attorney General works in the executive branch under the President, serving as a member of the President's Cabinet and the head of the Department of Justice. However, the Attorney General is not the President's personal lawyer and has a professional and legal duty to uphold the U.S. Constitution and federal law rather than personal or political interests.

As the head of the U.S. Department of Justice, the Attorney General advises the President and executive departments on legal matters. They oversee federal law enforcement agencies like the FBI and DEA, and they direct federal prosecutions. While the President appoints the Attorney General and has the power to dismiss them, Department of Justice traditions emphasize a degree of operational independence in criminal investigations so that the law is applied fairly without political interference.

Historically, the DOJ has operated with a degree of structural independence to prevent the presidency from weaponizing federal law enforcement. Blanche has publicly dismissed this concept, calling it a "misperception that there's this separation and independence between the Department of Justice and the White House". During a Meet the Press interview, he formally refused to pledge operational independence from the White House, arguing that no Attorney General should ever make such a commitment.

Before taking leadership of the Justice Department, Blanche was Donald Trump’s lead criminal defense attorney. Blanche's stance aligns with a strict "unitary executive theory. "

  6. Todd Haley is excited about Germie Bernard: “I’m really excited about this kid. I think that’s a big item. He’s not the biggest, but he looks like he’s got a little moxie, and he’s developing a little chemistry with Aaron, so that’s a really good sign. It doesn’t usually happen, but when you see a young guy, what I like is, he looks like he’s got great feel when he’s playing inside as a slot-type receiver. He’s got quickness, he doesn’t look like he’s afraid. He looks tough. Totally different guy than, say, JuJu.” #Steelers #NFL

  11. From the "glad/surprised I'm not the only one who wanted this one back in print" files, Todd Rundgren's massively underrated album where all sounds come from his voice. Beautiful harmonies rubbing elbows with explorations of the Emulator II in the same neighborhood as the most experimental industrial musicians at the time.

The Runt's one of those artists who does what we'd all like to imagine we'd do if we got a lucky break like writing "I Saw The Light" and producing Bat Out of Hell - namely, whatever he wanted.
