'Carers UK estimated last year that if every unpaid carer in the country decided to cease caring tomorrow and joined the “productive” economy instead, that would cost the state £184bn a year. In other words, the cost of disability is already being shouldered mainly by disabled people and their loved ones. The state owes these families an enormous debt of gratitude as a baseline.'

'According to the 2021 census, there are 5.8 million unpaid carers in the UK, 1.2 million of those living in poverty, 400,000 in deep poverty. A report by the Social Metrics Commission found that, of the 14.9 million people living in poverty in the UK in 2021-22, 8.6 million were in families that included a disabled person.'

'As of last October, there were 3.6 million personal independence payment (Pip) claimants. Eligibility is stringent. The idea – last floated by Tony Blair, whose transformation into know-nothing golf-club pontificator is still startling after all this time – that we are “medicalising the ups and downs of life”, handing out diagnoses and sickness benefits to people who just feel a bit sad, is fanciful.'

Oh my goodness! Who is this moron on Newsnight, defending Streetings assertion of 'overdiagnosis'? (Jake Richards)
Well done Victoria Derbyshire for not letting him get away with semantics.

If you voted Labour, are their policies what you expected?
Did you agree with the removal of the winter fuel payment for pensioners or not scrapping the two child benefit cap?
Not satisfied with these assaults on the vulnerable, now they're targeting the disabled. How low can they go?
-
I want to see a realistic risk assessment.
The neoliberal IDIOTS don't give a stuff about the impact on the mental health of the vulnerable people who will suffer... The fear alone has an impact before any cuts become a reality.
Then there are those of us who are carers, also impacted by having to soothe and try to mitigate the harms.
I am F*CKING FURIOUS!

So do I take it that the Labour party doesn't think disabled people are worthy of a decent life? Should my disabled family member just die rather than be a cost to the state?
Do they believe that the vulnerable have chosen to be in this position? Do those planning cuts imagine they are invulnerable to disability?
For a Labour gov' to be increasing poverty amongst the vulnerable... and claiming the moral high ground... Shame on you all!

Amongst the key findings:
"The UK has some of the least generous welfare across the OECD: the UK ranks in the middle of OECD countries for welfare spending... and third lowest for welfare value (per cent of average wages)."
Do Labour seriously think they were elected to cut the welfare bill (starting with the winter fuel payment)?
Perhaps they think as soon as a person becomes disabled they should be euthanised? It's looking that way.

If you squint, you might be able to see a watery patch of sunshine on the sea. #StMarysLighthouse was a ghostly apparition this morning.
Too 'cheap' to pay for parking, my chosen street parking spot has the added bonus of daffodils and hyacinths for some colour and makes me walk a little further rather than parking on The Links.
Have you had your walk yet @tompearce49 ?

My GP has prescribed statins. After a discussion, I was convinced I should take them.
But I got home, read the accompanying leaflet, and now I'm not so sure...
It sounds as though I'm casting into the ether for medical advice, which is ridiculous, but I just can't seem to settle my mind.

I was going to provide links to relevant research, but I think this cartoon says it all.

I liked #PaulMcNamee of #BigIssue 's contribution to 'Newsnight' following the poisonous Kendall's stoking hatred towards the vulnerable. Bit late posting this, but until the narrative changes it's still worth mentioning.
