  7. #CambridgeUniversity launches project to rescue data trapped on old #floppydisks
On October 9, Cambridge University Library opened its doors to anyone with an old floppy disk and a question: What’s on here? The public “Copy that Floppy” session marked the launch of #FutureNostalgia, a year-long project dedicated to rescuing data from obsolete magnetic media before time and oxide decay make it impossible.

I think one of the better examples of what @tofugolem is talking about might be #LasVegas.

Las Vegas has a small, not terribly significant downtown. And of course the infamous Strip, lined with gaudy casinos—apparently it’s the gaudier the better. Outside that area, you’re very rapidly in huge subdivisions that stretch out for miles in every direction.

I haven’t seen what’s happened there since the Financial Crisis. I heard Las Vegas was hit hard by the housing meltdown.

But in these subdivisions, many of the streets are cul de sacs. They’d be impossible to run buses through, so passengers would have to walk—I think—up to two miles to get to a stop.

A lot of the problem with #PublicTransit is in housing.

I think also of #SaltLakeCity, which has been attracting high technology, at least along a north-south freeway corridor. #Utah used to frown on alcohol. Now you’ll find hipster breweries everywhere.

Salt Lake City has grown—I think over a longer period of time—in a pattern similar to Las Vegas, with single family homes across the valley.

#Reno and #Stockton would be similar examples. Probably #Modesto and #Fresno as well. And of course #LosAngeles is notorious for suburban sprawl, but you see it even where transit is better, in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the sprawl now extends half way to #Sacramento, which has its own sprawl.

  13. Some subjectivists and relativists need not agree to these statements from "measures" of subjectivism and relativism, raising questions about face validity. Can psychologists chat with philosophers before making scales like these?

    #Subjectivism:
    The truth does not exist
All subjective perceptions of a chain of events are equally true

    #Relativism:
It is impossible to compare different cultures beliefs about reality in terms of "correctness"
