  2. A quotation from George Orwell

All nationalists have the power of not seeing resemblances between similar sets of facts. A British Tory will defend self-determination in Europe and oppose it in India with no feeling of inconsistency. Actions are held to be good or bad, not on their own merits, but according to who does them, and there is almost no kind of outrage — torture, the use of hostages, forced labour, mass deportations, imprisonment without trial, forgery, assassination, the bombing of civilians — which does not change its moral colour when it is committed by ‘our’ side.

George Orwell (1903-1950) English journalist, essayist, writer [pseud. of Eric Arthur Blair]
Essay (1945-05), “Notes on Nationalism,” Polemic Magazine (1945-10)

  4. Jane Martinson – The BBC is facing a coordinated, politically motivated attack

"a political campaign against the BBC that could act as a textbook example of how to confuse and undermine the kind of journalism that is, at the very least, aiming for impartiality in a sea of spin and distortion"

  5. We’ve never lived on granite foundations. What we call “objectivity” in social and moral life is scaffolding: provisional, rhetorical, maintained through care, reciprocity, and revolt.

In my new essay, I map an operating model for reasoning without granite illusions — and argue for an ethic of repair.

  10. Can a person be for #trans #rights without full #gender #relativism? I think so.

The evidence behind human cognitive processing being model-first is piling up so fast, it is hard to consider anything but the case that the person’s internal model for their gender is the primary deciding factor in how they experience the world.

However, there is a line where the human ends and the animal begins. And this is where the bets for cognitive processing also have to come off.

  11. #Truth #Relativism and its Ties to #ConspiracyTheory Beliefs: Results revealed that those believing truth to be subjective were more inclined towards conspiracy beliefs and resisting contradictory facts. This subjective truth approach paradoxically tied with dogmatism.

  13. Some subjectivists and relativists need not agree to these statements from "measures" of subjectivism and relativism, raising questions about face validity. Can psychologists chat with philosophers before making scales like these?

    #Subjectivism:
    The truth does not exist
All subjective perceptions of a chain of events are equally true

    #Relativism:
It is impossible to compare different cultures beliefs about reality in terms of "correctness"

  14. If there is a universal moral duty to act respectfully toward individuals and cultures whose beliefs differ from your own, there is at least one universal moral duty. It is a universal moral duty that is not universally recognized.

Moral relativism and tolerance are fundamentally at odds.
