On AB-Ottawa MOU: Coastal First Nations previously expressed strong opposition to an oil pipeline to the North Coast.
"Any jobs created aren't worth the environmental risk", citing human error as the cause of disasters like the sinking of the Queen of the North and a U.S. navy vessel that sank nearly 80 years ago...
"the navy vessel has still not been recovered or cleaned up and leaked fuel in 2012." ~ Gitga'at First Nation spokesperson Art Sterritt
"It's more heartbreaking to know that the lands and the waters and the beauty of British Columbia, the coastal regions is being sacrificed for oil and gas, pipelines and LNG development" ~ Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs

🚨 Mayor Sim & ABC Party strikes again, disdain for Vancouverites. Profit over people of #Vancouver
@lidsville posted on 🦋 @lidsville.bsky.social:
"So, last night [Dec 11, 2025] the ruling ABC Vancouver party and mayor cut short a crucial public hearing by 4 hours so they could attend the Christmas party of the real estate developers' assn (UDI).
There was a motion to keep the hearing going, but they voted it down. #vanpoli. #vanre"
[source: https://bsky.app/profile/lidsville.bsky.social/post/3m7sqagrxps2r]
👀 One Vancouverite replied, pointed out:
"ABC wasn't just going to the developers' Christmas party, it was cutting the hearing over turning the Downtown Eastside into tower$$$$"
One friend of mayor, a disgraced former CEO of an athleisure brand, stands to benefit perhaps?

Concerned about the possibility that wood pellets (aka wood byproducts) produced by logging #OldGrowth in B.C. could be used for "green hydrogen". In turn, used for "carbon capture" and further fossil fuels.

☝🏻may be a follow-up to major Sim & ABC Party's Nov 2024 attempt to reverse 2016 bylaw which "gradually phases out natural gas for space and water heating in most new building types by 2025".
""Natural" gas in this way is the single largest source of carbon pollution in the city"
Vancouver citizens protested. The motion, in the end, was defeated.

Another *last minute amendment* to controversial #Vancouver 2026 Budget.
Mayor Sim, ABC Party majority, and allies have cut $8.2 million from Vancouver's existing retrofit program to make rental buildings less polluting and safer during climate disasters (cooling during #extremeheat)
"The climate crisis is making extreme heat more common, inflicting a deadly toll: the 2021 heat dome alone was responsible for 117 deaths in the city. Buildings are also responsible for about 60% of Vancouver's greenhouse gas emissions, largely because of gas heating." (600+ deaths in B.C. during #BCheatdome)
UBC professor:
"The word 'retrofit' is insufficient to explain the programs Vancouver's ABC part is cutting. It kind of makes it sound like this is a luxury, but cooling and living in a safe home is a human right."
Stand.Earth found, through FOI, trove of emails suggesting "provincial gas utility has had the retrofit program in its crosshairs since at least last year"

Mayor Sim and ABC Party majority council pushing through 2026 Budget, disregarding #Vancouver public pushback. This goes above & beyond the Urban Planning & Sustainability dept.
🔥👉🏻 "To silence citizens"
OneCity Vancouver reports:
NEW: City Council to consider cutting key committees (e.g. Arts and Culture, Renters, Older Persons and Elders) to silence citizens.
🚨If City Hall doesn't work for citizens, then who does it work for? (hint: Ken's rich donors!)

Former 🇨🇦 Cabinet Minister Steven Guilbeault states re AB-Ottawa/Federal government energy MOU:
“We have abandoned 2030 [climate targets]; there's no way we can achieve that. I think it lacks the honesty that Canadians deserve on this issue. It's disingenuous."

Former 🇨🇦 Cabinet Minister Steven Guilbeault states re AB-Ottawa/Federal government energy MOU:
The budget “explicitly mentioned that we're excluding "enhanced oil recovery" from the tax credit -- a demand from Green Party Leader Elizabeth May that Guilbeault had communicated to Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne as her red line.
“Then Elizabeth votes for us with the budget, and then, we turn around two weeks later, barely, and we include this in the MOU with Alberta."
"This is unacceptable, I gave my word to Elizabeth, we gave our word as a party to Elizabeth, and we're betraying our word to her.”

The National Observer zooms in on AB-Ottawa/Federal government energy MOU, as proposing:
🪔 "to slash-and-burn a series of climate policies" affecting clean electricity regulations, the oil and gas emissions cap and the oil tanker moratorium on B.C.'s coast
🪔 "dramatic reversal in policy that would allow carbon capture tax credits to be used for "enhanced oil recovery" (pumping more oil out of the ground using captured carbon dioxide) — despite that being explicitly excluded in the federal budget"
Former 🇨🇦 Cabinet Minister Steven Guilbeault states:
🚨"the government isn't being honest with the public and is betraying its commitments"

Another #BCheatdome 📜lawsuit launched.
But this one is a class-action lawsuit. It's against Canadian Pacific and Canadian National railways. Several lawsuits were filed after the fire 🔥 that decimated the town of Lytton, BC, during the 2021 heatdome which killed over 600 people throughout B.C.
🌡️Temperatures reached a Canadian record of 49.6 Celsius in Lytton, the day before the fire.

💯🎯 Stewart Prest, UBC political scientist comment wrt Premier Smith booed by UCP re AB-Ottawa/Federal govt energy MOU:
"With TMX the federal Liberals basically did what Carney is promising to do—pushed a pipeline to the coast over BC and Indigenous objections. They even federally funded it, dispensing with the need for a business case.
It didn't even move the needle. Why would a second pipeline be different?"

On today's AB-Ottawa/Federal government energy MOU...
Julia Levin, associate director at Environmental Defense Canada: "All of this was ostensibly to strengthen industrial carbon pricing, but it's actually set to *weaken* pricing and undermine the entire regime".
That was Levin's comment with regards to catching this tweet by AB Premier Smith's chief of staff and his interpretation & takeaway (appearing different than Carney's announcement):

Lheidli T'enneh First Nation bans herbicides -- particularly glyphosate -- in north central B.C.
Toxic chemicals such as GMO pose potential negative impacts on #biodiversity, the health & well-being of people, and wildlife.
"Historically, glyphosate has been used as part of an annual effort to eradicate broadleaf trees such as aspen and birch, in order to make more room for commercially valuable species of trees like pine and Douglas fir."
The B.C. NDP government has promised to phase out the use of glyphosate.
