#VanRE bubble bursting
42% drop in #Vancouver housing starts? (Unstated) Existing condo inventory isn't selling.
After 15+ years, the industry w/ mantra "increase supply (i.e. of *luxury* and shoebox condos) for more homes" states they can't build more "affordable homes", need "reduced construction costs" (for higher 🤑)
Truly affordable homes for citizens who live in B.C. still unavailable.
Land speculation + #shadowflipping increased -- after 15+ years same mantra.

"Local officials in Burnaby and #Vancouver have gone even further by reducing or eliminating affordable housing agreements, in many cases to zero."
"Development charges exist for a simple reason: new residents require new roads, sewers, water systems, parks and transit. Those who profit from building should help pay for the infrastructure their projects demand."

So what do the Carney Federal and B.C. governments do?
Offer up to $3 billion to bail out #VanRE developers who contributed to driving up land values + building luxury condos = out of reach housing! Present & wrap it up as buying housing for the public in Vancouver.
While the BC opposition party presents the situation as "the government's over-regulation of the housing market."...
More political will should have been done sooner.

This should be a #VanPoli election issue in 2026.
Vancouver Mayor Sim & ABC Party cut core services and staff. Yet...
🏢 Their Real Estate & Facilities Management dept. "routinely instructed appraisers to value city land based on the previous zoning and to ignore the new rezoning" and “may have understated value by 20-40%” for min. 3 properties.
🤑 "Basing sale prices on previous zoning means that the purchaser-developer -- not the city -- collects the value of the land lift, which is often many millions of dollars."
-
2026 is a municipal election year for City of Vancouver. This is an additional bad look for Mayor Sim and the majority ABC Party:
The Office of the Auditor General reported:
"out of the 16 transactions 14 were initiated by potential buyers or developers and not the city"...
"Vancouver has largely been reacting to offers and not “proactively” using its land portfolio to advance priorities like affordable housing."

🚨 Mayor Sim & ABC Party strikes again, disdain for Vancouverites. Profit over people of #Vancouver
@lidsville posted on 🦋 @lidsville.bsky.social:
"So, last night [Dec 11, 2025] the ruling ABC Vancouver party and mayor cut short a crucial public hearing by 4 hours so they could attend the Christmas party of the real estate developers' assn (UDI).
There was a motion to keep the hearing going, but they voted it down. #vanpoli. #vanre"
[source: https://bsky.app/profile/lidsville.bsky.social/post/3m7sqagrxps2r]
👀 One Vancouverite replied, pointed out:
"ABC wasn't just going to the developers' Christmas party, it was cutting the hearing over turning the Downtown Eastside into tower$$$$"
One friend of mayor, a disgraced former CEO of an athleisure brand, stands to benefit perhaps?
-
Mayor Sim and ABC Party majority council pushing through 2026 Budget, disregarding #Vancouver public pushback. This goes above & beyond the Urban Planning & Sustainability dept.
🔥👉🏻 "To silence citizens"
OneCity Vancouver reports:
NEW: City Council to consider cutting key committees (e.g. Arts and Culture, Renters, Older Persons and Elders) to silence citizens.
🚨If City Hall doesn't work for citizens, then who does it work for? (hint: Ken's rich donors!)

@AssociatedPress @business-and-finance-AssociatedPress
Building apartments near public transit (hubs on main street/corridors) is what's starting to happen in Vancouver. It took an oversupply in the market of empty expensive condos to make this happen. Saturated condo market of #VanRE making.

Railtown in #Vancouver, "light industrial" zoning debates on:
* public and employee safety vs. business viability and growth
* 'creative businesses' with modern industrial uses vs. protection of regional industrial land shortage
* high demand for below-market rental, at-market rental, and live/work housing vs. (saturated) strata market condos (approx. 4000+ in excess)
City councilor Sean Orr cast the only vote in opposition, expressing preference for #AffordableHousing:
"The amended motion's calls for an unspecified diverse housing mix were "codes for gentrification"".

A #Vancouver tech real estate company "admits to trading $26 million in securities over 7 years without being registered, contrary to the Securities Act"

Everyday I get closer to becoming a Scooby-Doo villain in an attempt to scare #RealEstate investors away to from #Vancouver and to lower housing prices
Pulls monster mask off... "And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling kids!"

Very interesting 🧵 (from 2019) currently trending again on 🐦-site (sorry). Architect, now @alfredtwu, examined how low- to mid-rise buildings (approx. 6 stories, similar to Europe) are *more efficient*.
Why is the current ABC #Vancouver party mayor & city council pushing for more high rises (40+ stories) and to abolish the #VancouverParkBoard?
Who actually benefits? Vancouverites or developers? 🤨
-
Tonight at #Vancouver city hall re Mayor Sim's #VancouverParkBoard motion. @jenstden covering:
Former MP Libby Davies is asking "what is the secret deal you have with powerful developers to sell public park land?" That gets her a point of order violation!

WTH is going on w/current Mayor of #Vancouver and his ABC council??
Today's presser w/ mayor Swagger Sim: A submission to BC govt to change the city charter in order to remove the *elected* Vancouver Park Board -- which overlooks the parks that locals and tourists LOVE. Full of corp tech buzzwords, conflating social issues + obfuscating real reason for significant change to charter.
Worse: Mayor already fired *elected* city park board members + removed from ABC poli party. #VanRE #democracy

Thanks to #VanRE #shadowflipping #casinogate + luxury condos:
"The loss of rental stock due to redevelopment has made the net number of purpose-built rental units in B.C. comparable to what it was in the early 1990s — while the population has grown by 50% since that time."

Sadly unsurprising. #VanRE w/ land speculation, shadow flipping, and luxury condos has been a growing issue for 10+ years. Reading this makes #costofliving and greedflation even more painful.
Majority of current city council —except Christine Boyle and Adrienne Carr— have supported luxury developers.
“Report highlights income inequality… Vancouver actually has very much the housing prices of San Francisco, but the local median household incomes of Columbus, Ohio“

#VanRE luxury condos with shadow flipping + land speculation has dominated the market for 10+ years.
Renters in British Columbia at #affordablehousing "crisis level".
16% of B.C. renters spent more than 50% of income to cover rent + utilities. The B.C. Non-Profit Housing Association (BCNPHA) says, "the latest numbers reflect years of failure to invest in rental housing".

The long-tail of #VanRE, shadow flipping and land speculation, occurring well over a decade.

@chrismarkevich
Housing needs to be removed from the market somehow to become affordableMy well-run co-op is well prepared to self-manage for another thirty years or so
With nobody extracting profits, our rents (“housing charges” 🙄) are going up this year to cover inflation and keep the co-op on solid footing
How much does it cost to house several hundred people with no landlord? 1 bedroom = $978 ; 2 bed = $1,266
