  2. How Trump Gave the Worst a Free Pass
In total, since taking office again, Mr. Trump exempted 202 facilities in 39 states and Puerto Rico from clean-air regulations that were going into effect. Some were among the country’s worst industrial polluters, including chemical manufacturers, copper smelters and coal-burning power plants. About 3.3 million people live within three miles of at least one affected facility.

  4. (I have used the phrase in the first meaning, eg. seeing a book cover in a real physical bookstore that has clearly been generated by a diffusion model, feeling like I literally need to vomit, and then I've said I got "mugged in the Uncanny Alley".

But I thought that there might be some other perhaps better things the phrase could mean! I made it up myself, but I'm probably not the first person to do so, it's pretty obvious in hindsight.)

  5. forums.swift.org/t/preview-emb

Awesome to see swift testing working with embedded swift! I have a couple “cheap” “yellow” displays powered by an esp32p4 (one of the risc V ones that embedded swift supports) coming and I’m looking forward to writing tests for that in a decent testing framework.

  9. «Democracy has proven unable to reign in capitalism. China executes or life imprisons billionaires who break the law, we bail them out and immunize them from their crimes by fining their companies, but not them, leaving them still rich.

It all adds up to a horrid indictment of our system, and people are not going to put up with it forever. Liberal capitalism and liberal democracy, and perhaps democracy almost entirely, will be replaced by Party systems throughout the world over the next couple generations, starting, I’d guess, in about 15 years or so.

Failure, greed and incompetence have consequences, and the [sic] democracy will [be] one of the casualties of our elites depravity.»

As someone in my 60s, who was able to, without especially great effort on my part, do reasonably well in my life, it is still shocking to encounter sentiments like this. But I've been reading Welsh's articles for probably a year or more now, and I find I can't dismiss his basic arguments. Will the "death of democracy" come to pass? I don't know and neither does Welsh, but the rise of extreme inequality, the consequent capture of our institutions and governments by the wealthy few, and the collapse of opportunity for those foolish enough not be born when those things were at least less true cannot bode well for our political institutions.

  18. Okay, so I stumbled back across the Fennel language the other day. I remember toying around with it a few years ago, writing some scripts to talk to i3.

Anyway, running across it again gave me the idea that someone should do for Lua what Gleam has done for Erlang/Javascript: write a transpiler to go from some functional-flavored, strictly-typed language into Lua (or even Lua bytecode).

I think maybe I could even possibly be that someone, although I've never implemented anything more complex than a very bare-bones Lisp. Maybe this is my chance.

  19. Has anyone noticed that Github is a steaming pile of shit now? I mean yeah I know it's a sloppy cesspool, but I'm talking functionally... I just got rate limited typing in the Username field lmao

  21. Caves of Qud update:

Woo, the reprogrammable recoiler I've been lugging around since the early game is finally imprinted! Turns out reprogrammable recoilers need a large chunk of energy to initially program, more than my various chem cells and solar cells could provide.

Thankfully, using the standard lifehack of hitting a Putus Templar over the head with a large flaming electrified axe and taking their stuff, I got my hands on a couple lava-powered cells that can (barely) handle the recoiler programming.

All that to just get a Six Day Stilt recoiler, the only location that was still mildly inconvenient to get to and not covered by my half dozen other recoilers.
