  5. A quintet of California quail dropped by the house over the weekend — a first, though I've seen them in the neighborhood before. They're very round! And usually pretty hard to see lurking in the underbrush. But for about 5 minutes some of them perched in a nearby oak at a spot where I could point my lens through the foliage.

  6. My late-night flight over the Midwest was particularly vivid — all those city streetlights reflecting off the snow. This is the Toronto area of Canada, with Lake Ontario to the right.

  11. Today in AI training and alignment adventures, a very paperclip-maximizing anecdote from a US Air Force AI simulation. "We trained the system – ‘don’t kill the operator.' So what does it start doing? It starts destroying the communication tower."

  12. Snow crystals up close, Tahoe Rim Trail, California. Near Carnelian Bay, California. Tips are illuminated by sunlight; the bluer parts of the scene are in shadow.

  17. I saw a sharp-shinned hawk in New Mexico nail a Woodhouse's scrub jay. The hawk held the jay on the ground for a few seconds while it thrashed its last. Then it rested while cloaking its prey with its wings outstretched. Then it carried the jay away for breakfast. I wish I'd gotten a better flight photo, but it does show the gist of the moment. #birds #birding #hawk #NaturePhotography #NewMexico #NatureRedInToothAndClaw

  18. Second update: Clouds cleared so I took some more photos. This one is definitely a Perseid meteor. Alas, right at the edge of the frame, and teensy, and my focus was off, and it's marred by clouds, but I'll take it.

  19. Hardest Lego set we've ever done (I kind of supervise and help my kid). Many fiddly details, and construction proceeds linearly through a complex 3D design, so if you mess up, you have to step backwards, stripping it down until you can fix the problem. We messed up 7 times!

  24. Watching videos on Apple log video shot with iPhone 15 Pro models and appreciating better how much camera processing is involved in producing regular video, and how much latitude there is in linking the original scene to the finished video.
