    That's bad enough, but get this -- the reset has *already happened* when the `focus` event fires, so we can't snapshot the data because it's already lost. And yet the resulting `selectionchange` event **hasn't** fired yet, so we can't use that event to filter-out the change.

  4. An unplanned side effect of #MuC2023 happening in Switzerland:

    Because EU mobile data roaming regulations don't apply, I'd get charged an obscene amount for each megabyte I use. Consequently I've disabled my mobile data and confined myself to wifi.

    As a result, whenever I'm outside the conference's wifi range (and not in my hotel), I can't check social media. This afternoon while out at the lake, I was 100% unable to look at my Mastodon feed.

    So instead I looked at some ducks. 🦆🦆🦆

  17. Black holes that “shouldn’t” exist

    According to astrophysicist, some black holes within a certain mass range should not exist. That’s because their massive progenitor stars are expected to violently self-destruct in what’s known as a pair-instability supernova, leaving nothing behind.

    New research led by Monash University and ARC Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav) student, Hui Tong, has now revealed indirect evidence for this long-theorised pair-instability mass gap using data from gravitational-wave detections.

    Tong and the team of researchers found the strongest evidence to date, through inferred observations, that nature really does avoid forming black holes of a particular mass range. The findings have been published in the journal, Nature.

  23. #IBM's small #LLM #AI series #Granite is grossly underrated. Granite 4.1 has a range of small models ranging from 3B to 30B. Today, I downloaded and tested a Granite 4.1 8B model. It is surprisingly fast and capable, especially in tool use.

    AI haters do not understand how LLM works. It is not about the size of the model. It is about the quality of training data and fine-tuning (the real training for an LLM to become "rational" in terms of giving "smart" inference to a user's request).
