  1. Another week, another Let's talk tech Thursday! This week I chat about some of the implications (good and bad) of Meta's removal of end-to-end encryption on Instagram. Also, Pokémon Go and automated delivery bots, and the UK Government u-turn on AI copyright law (just don't ask them what their position is now).

  4. Because there aren't enough tech newsletters in the world, every Thursday I opine on some of the tech news. This week I chat about the #Meta Ray-Ban revelation, #Proton vs the FBI, and the #Taya necklace that promises to transcribe your audio to text - but just *your* audio.

  9. Had to replace my phone recently. Google to Google, but do you think my apps transferred as promised? They did not.

So, here's my super scientific rating of how easy it is to reinstall your apps onto a new handset.

  10. Fixed it. Turns out that after the Open by default settings have been cleared, you need to open up Chrome (I use Firefox by default), then click on a mailto link, then the phone gives me the choice of a new default email client. Once you've done that, whatever browser you use then knows the default email client.

  11. Does anyone know how to change the default email app away from Gmail on ? I'm on a Pixel phone, if that makes a difference).

I've got as far as figuring out that I need to go to the Gmail app settings and remove the "Open by default" settings, but all that's done is break mailto links in the browser (as in, tapping them does literally nothing).

  12. And for the blog spotlight this week, this post made me stop and think about how much of a bias to EU tech I have - perhaps to a fault. Sure, it might be "better" than some American big tech. But is that where the bar should be?

Ava (not sure if she's on Mastodon) blogs pretty regularly about tech and data protection law, amongst other things.

  13. And the blog spotlight this week is a great essay on Technofascism from @gvwilson, part of a really good series of posts on tech's role in the rise of (amongst other things) white nationalism, climate change, and rising inequality.

  16. Hi [name redacted]. Wait, you need to understand my problem too? Did neither your AI nor [previous person] fill you in? Ok, here you are...

...right, you can't solve my issue either. I need to call up? Ok, well thanks then...

  17. Hello AI chatbot, here's my name, my company's name, one of the mobile numbers on the account, and a brief description of my problem.

Wonderful, you'll put me through to an EE Mobile advisor. How efficient.

    (6 mins later)

Ah hello [name redacted]. What's that? You want to know my problem? Oh the AI didn't pass that on? Ok, well here it is.

...yes we are a small business account. Oh you can't help me? You'll transfer me though. Ok, thanks I guess...

  18. I need to make a quick change to my org's mobiles. I won't call up, because every time I do I'm told EE's online Mobile Manager portal is quicker.

What's that? I need to rest my password because it's been too long. But you'll email me? Cool.

Hmm, there's no email. Lemme check spam. Nope, nothing. What if I use the forgot password link to manually reset.

Oh, it's "failed our automated checks". How annoying. Not to worry, there's a nice chabot here that I'm *sure* will be super helpful...

  19. RE: fosstodon.org/@joel/1166035805

As someone who posts more about posting than about anything else, and whose drafts folder is full of posts that might have been, this speaks to me on a cellular level.

  20. Are people still using twitter:title etc. meta tags in their site's head? I've still got mine in there, but I'm obviously not on Twitter anymore, and I'm not really fussed about how my stuff looks if it's shared over there.

Can I get rid of it? Does anything else use those meta tags? Surely the og tags are sufficient?

  21. Also, for my blog spotlight this week, @jaredwhite's great post about what he's termed "neuromaxxing". Read it for the delightful intro paragraph, if nothing else (but also, for everything else)

  24. @sergio_101 Lately I've fallen into the #PKM trap of "everything must be in #Obsidian always". Which is to say, for me there's a real mixture of things I write and forget about, things I write and keep coming back to, and a huge amount that gets into the vault and I literally never interact with. I probably need to rethink some things...

  29. Stuck in a loop with . Laptop needs an out of warranty repair, which they've quoted for and I've accepted. They offer bank transfer as a payment option, which I've chosen.

This morning, a few days later, I get a chaser email from Dell asking for payment, I reply asking for the invoice so that my finance colleagues can process the payment. They reply saying the invoice can only be produced _after_ the payment has been made.

  30. And for the blog spotlight, this post by Ky Decker really struck a cord.

There's a lot of talk about AI taking jobs, but often in the sense that AI is directly replacing people. There's another side to it; fighting the rise of AI slop can sometimes be just to exhausting.

Definitely give this a read: ky.fyi/posts/ai-burnout
