Similarly, Passkeys are great. They're simple, easy, and slightly less annoying than Authentication codes. But now I'm in a scenario where - because the systems have demanded it - I'm essentially locked out of a bunch of things until I get a new phone.
And no, I didn't need to panic buy the very latest Pixel phone. But I can, and for me that beats the alternative of panic buying any old phone with (eg) a crap camera, to give myself a few months to do more work in order to get a non-Google phone

Tech tends to creep in. I didn't necessarily want another Google phone, but I've got Google Nest, and all my photos are in Google Photos, and I know if I get another Google phone I'll be able to more or less just sign in and get going. I hadn't done the mental work yet to start my de-Googling, and this weekend wasn't going to be it.

There's lots about this that annoy me. But one of the dumbest things is that part of the reason I wanted the new phone quickly is because pretty much all my online work accounts need Passkeys. They are all on my phone. And it turns out that in order for your phone to talk to your laptop in the Passkey providing process, it needs Bluetooth.

I've got the option of having it delivered the next working day (Monday), or picking it up from my local O2 store in 30 mins. Obviously, I pick the latter.
Half hour later I get an email saying my phone will be ready to collect tomorrow. This is not what I asked for.
I call the store to check. Yes, they can see my order. Yes, they have a Pixel 11 Pro XL in store. No, unfortunately they can't give it to me because the system hasn't allocated that stock to my name. I should check back tomorrow.

A lot of faffing and half-hearted research later, and I settle on a Pixel 11 Pro XL. I'm not happy about it, and sort of feel rushed into a decision. While I do want to de-Google my life, I'm also a parent to a young child and there are certain aspects of my life that I just need something that I know, that works, that has a good camera, and that doesn't mean uprooting the entirety of my personal tech stack overnight. So I suck it up, and get the upgrade.

I've had a case on the phone the entire time, and it's only in taking that off that I realise at some point in the last 6 months I must have dropped the phone and cracked it. No warranty repair for me. It's another £100 to swap the phone. Oh, and it needs to be a like for like, and they don't have this in stock, so it will be at least 5 working days until I have a replacement.
OK - well I'm on a SIM only contract, so let's have a look at upgrading to a phone contract...

I hate tech rant incoming...
About 6 months ago, my Google Pixel 8 Pro decided that neither Bluetooth, nor WiFi were things that it needed. £100 excess to my insurance later, I had a refurbished phone and went about my day. Yesterday, this phone decided the same thing - no WiFi, no Bluetooth. Luckily, I'm within my 12 months warranty with the refurb, so I call up the insurance to sort it.
