First of all, slop is slop because of provenance. Provenance is not a function of content. It's a function of how that content came to be. Provenance is what makes "the same sentence" plagiarism or not-plagiarism in different contexts, what makes "the same apple" organic or not-organic in different contexts.

The system had two candidate paths for producing a transcription from phonemes. The first searched the phoneme map directly: given what was heard, what word matches best? The second used context to select the most plausible candidate from what the acoustic layer produced. Both are grounded — they can only choose from what they already know.
The third path I added is different. It generates.

Instead of searching for the best known match, it uses the phoneme sequence and the conversation context together to produce a candidate that might not have been in the original output at all. Think of it as asking: if someone with these phonological patterns, in this conversation, said something that sounded like this — what's the most likely word they were reaching for, even if the direct match isn't in the map?
This is a delicate thing to get right.

A generative path that's too confident produces hallucinations — it fills in gaps with plausible-sounding words that have nothing to do with what was said. That's the failure mode I'm most worried about in the whole system, because it's the failure that's invisible to the speaker. They said something real. The machine substituted something invented. And the listener has no idea.
The safeguard is that the generative path has to be consistent with the phoneme evidence.

It's not free to invent — it's constrained to what the acoustic layer actually heard. The creativity is in the mapping, not the departure from what was said. That constraint is the difference between a system that understands and one that guesses.

A generative phoneme map: when the known substitutions aren't enough
Every transcription system that handles non-standard speech patterns eventually runs into the same wall: the cases you anticipated and the cases you didn't. You can build equivalency maps — careful, researched tables of which sounds tend to substitute for which in a particular speaker population — but speech is richer than any table. There will always be a sound combination the map doesn't cover.

Here I am in a lounge at #YYZ, waiting for my flight to #SFO and #XFD16 to board. Contemplating the presentations I’m likely to see over the next few days (including the likely firehose of #AI that goes with them) and getting into what I hope is the right mindset.
#InfoSec has always been a balancing act between requirements and risk, but I’m starting to think that we’re playing a shell game where we address one risk while being distracted from thinking about others. The lingering problem is that if I’m not stealing little moments of work time to noodle on that desktop, I don’t know when I’ll get to use it. The time between work and bed is full of annoying chores and dog-walking and heating up half-assed meals for myself and family and fetching shit—endlessly fetching shit.

Aside from needing new peripherals, maybe this is fine. I’m down to two devices* there anyway. Having a KVM to switch almost seamlessly from one to the other is a moral hazard I should have dealt with years ago, if I’m brutally honest with myself. Assuming that I’m not switching between two live devices, this is sort of better because now the desktop is hooked up to the secondary (another thing that I could have done years ago).
* one device is a USB-C dock and an upright stand that can hold three laptops, coincidentally there are three fully USB-C capable laptops that reside or layover in the house.
