  1. Some good news for today: .4.1 fixes the "Apps that include Java may quit unexpectedly" bug

  2. @Edent They're also reliable 9I think we've once had a driver break down but that's going to happen occasionally) and don't do as many stupid switches as the others seem to (but they make it clear if there are any).
Even if they were a couple of quid more than the others would be worth it ...

  3. @Edent +1 (actually a lot more) to this. As well as being a record for myself, it helps newbies get onboard without feeling intimidated y having to interact with "scary people". They can more easily experiment on their own.
Also if I've written doc on something and can point a newbie at it when they do all, I feel I've got something right (unless the doc was particularly hard to find!) so it's a win for everyone!

  4. Current status: Having FOMO because I'm not at this week 😥

  5. Really positive productive day. Expect availability of Eclipse Temurin from 20 on most of the main platforms shortly after I wake up tomorrow (I've focused on Linux/aarch64 but the AQA quality results analysis are generic)

  6. @ben @Edent It was more entertaining than a Rick Roll! I was mostly assuming it was Terence's premium number as part of a scheme ;-)

  7. Today I'm reading through a fantastic technical book "Mastering Embedded Linux Programming" by @csimmonds and Frank Vasquez which is easy to read and pitched at exactly the level I hoped. Most examples are for the #BeagleBone black (mine will have to come out from its retirement drawer soon!)
This will definitely make it easier than the previous floundering around with my #sbc collection and let me do more of what I want with them!

  12. If you need any more convincing that you should upgrade to a newer JDK version (Preferably by if you're not already using it!) then here's the evidence from @stocker that you're being kinder to the environment by using later versions: medium.com/growing-green-softw

  13. Windows 32-bit support is being removed from the OpenJDK codebase for all future versions (So 24 will be the first one where it will not be possible to target that platform).
by stopped building it in JDK21. Previous versions (8, 11 and 17) will continue to be available if needed.

  14. Looking for something to do today? The first summit streams start at 1100UTC (2½ hours from now) and is free to attend. There are talks from Adoptium contributors and users on a variety of topics.
See the agenda and register to attend at eclipse.org/events/2024/adopti

  15. Managed to get around the shortname thing and have now got a Dockerfile that says up a container that can build OpenJDK. Maybe more importantly this set up means you can do a comparable verification build of the latest releases of JDK21 and beyond - and you can do it independently of whatever compiler(s) you might have installed on the host windows system.

  16. Interesting - 24.04 (Noble) - as well as Debian's Trixie ("testing") - have stopped shipping the 'adduser' package in their base container images which means the command of that name is unavailable by default. "useradd" is still there though so the correct thing is to migrate and dockerfiles using "useradd".

This could impact people using Eclipse 's images too, which are now by default based on Noble (Jammy is still available, and adduser can still be added from the Noble repos)

  17. Announcement: The 7 container images for by will be soon removed due to CentOS7 being end-of-life and no longer receiving security updates. Users currently using it are encouraged to migrate to another OS which is shipped in the adoptium containers set, such as the ubi9-minimal images.

  18. New Relic's annual "The State of the java ecosystem" report for 2024 shows that Eclipse by has increased to 18.2% market share ahead of Amazon's Corretto which has dropped to 17.8%. Oracle is still just ahead on 20.8% but it dropped by over a quarter of it's percentage points since 2023.

  19. The docker images, and most of the installers (At the time of posting this 21 and 22 are still remaining but will appear soon) for the 8u412, 11.0.23, 17.0.11, 21.0.3 and 22.0.1 releases are now out :-) My work here is done - I'm taking a long weekend to recover!
More information about this release can be seen at adoptium.net/en-GB/blog/2024/0

  20. Eclipse have now released 8u412, 11.0.23, 17.0.11, 21.0.3 and 22.0.1 - our biggest release to date and all platforms have shipped within a week of the upstream tags being available 🍾🎉 Great work by the team!
Well be working on getting the rpm/deb installers and dockerhub images up tomorrow!

  21. Breaking the last link with my twitter (the eX-site) by changing my profile picture to a different one. A version of the one which had gone through a few versions of the Raspberry Pi 😀

  22. Right. Fingers crossed this one doesn't break ... 2

  23. End of week rant .. Takeaway pizza pricing annoy me at the best of times but literally have three "offers" for collection that are near identical for the two I want to order. BOGOF, 50% off, or specific pricing for one large or XXL pizza.

BOGOF can't be better than 50% off (and worse if you want things are different base prices). The specific single large/XXL prices are 1p less (because it ends in .98 for the two instead of .99.

WHAT IS THE POINT OF THIS?

    ahhh it's the weekend.

  24. My biggest worry about the computer industry is that a lot of people in software don't understand how computers work at the lower level, and so those skills will become less prevalent. But we will still need people who can understand, make secure, and fix bugs on them and the people capable of doing that will become more scarce.

Personally I feel very lucky now to be working every day with JVM developers who have many skills in that area.

  25. It's not quite an HDMI switch but maybe it's better? This is a (but that's not too relevant) with the HDMI out connected to the HDMI IN on an 5 Plus and displaying in a window on the 5's desktop. Neat - this is the novel built in feature that made me want to get this particular version of the board.

  26. Thanks @plwt - I hadn't reliased tha someone (@chikl ) had been keeping updated last year [1] after mozilla gave up on it in 2019 [2]

It's a great graphical tool as a plugin for firefox that I always loved for showing you what the web site your visiting is accessing from third party web sites - and some are really scary ...

  27. New sensibly-priced board with RVA22+RVV1.0! The F3 is now available with the SpacemiT K1 with eight X60 cores and under $100, although the versions available for now have 2 or 4GB RAM - A bit stingy but hopefully an 8GB one will be along soon. Seems it might require 12V/3A input too
They've also put it in the laptop which will apparently come in at under $300 but isn't available yet. Links:
