Cuando uno piensa en la antigua Roma, casi siempre aparece la misma imagen: el enorme anfiteatro de piedra que hoy conocemos como Coliseo de Roma.
Se empezó a construir alrededor del año 72 d.C. por orden del emperador Vespasiano, fundador de la dinastía Flavia.
Su hijo, Tito, lo inauguró en el año 80 d.C., y el tercero de la familia, Domiciano, terminó algunas ampliaciones poco después.Curiosamente, el Coliseo se levantó en un lugar que antes era un lago artificial del palacio de Nerón.
Tras la muerte de Nerón, los nuevos emperadores quisieron devolver ese espacio al pueblo.
Donde antes había un jardín privado imperial, levantaron un anfiteatro gigantesco para espectáculos públicos.El nombre “Coliseo” en realidad no es el original.
Los romanos lo llamaban Anfiteatro Flavio.
El nombre actual parece venir de una colosal estatua de Nerón que había cerca, el Coloso de Nerón.El edificio era una auténtica obra de ingeniería: podía albergar entre 50.000 y 65.000 espectadores, tenía más de 80 entradas y un sistema de pasillos y escaleras que permitía vaciarlo en pocos minutos.
Algo muy parecido a los estadios modernos.Además, los asientos estaban organizados según la clase social.
Los senadores abajo, cerca de la arena.
Los ciudadanos comunes en las gradas intermedias.
Y las mujeres y los pobres en las zonas más altas.Pero lo que realmente atraía a la gente eran los espectáculos.
Los más famosos eran los combates de gladiadores.
Eran luchadores entrenados que peleaban con distintos estilos y armas.
Algunos usaban redes y tridentes, otros espadas cortas, escudos grandes o cascos muy pesados.
No todos eran esclavos: algunos hombres libres se ofrecían voluntarios porque la fama y el dinero podían ser enormes.También se organizaban cacerías de animales, llamadas venationes.
Traían fieras de todo el imperio: leones, leopardos, osos, rinocerontes o elefantes.
A veces los cazadores profesionales luchaban contra ellos; otras veces simplemente se mostraban como espectáculo exótico para el público romano.Y sí, también hubo ejecuciones públicas, normalmente al mediodía.
A criminales condenados se les obligaba a enfrentarse a animales o a recrear escenas mitológicas que terminaban de forma bastante brutal.Hay muchas ideas populares sobre el Coliseo que en realidad no son correctas.
Una de ellas es que allí se hacían carreras de cuadrigas.
Eso no ocurrió.
Las carreras de carros se celebraban en otro lugar gigantesco de Roma: el Circo Máximo.
Ese recinto era mucho más largo y estaba diseñado precisamente para ese tipo de competición.Otra idea muy extendida es que el Coliseo se llenaba de agua para hacer batallas navales con tiburones, como aparece en algunas películas modernas.
En realidad, las naumaquias (combates navales) sí existieron en Roma, pero normalmente se hacían en estanques artificiales o en recintos preparados para ello.Algunos historiadores creen que durante los primeros años del anfiteatro, antes de construirse los complejos pasillos subterráneos, pudo haberse llenado de agua en alguna ocasión puntual.
Pero desde que el emperador Domiciano mandó construir el hipogeo —la red de túneles bajo la arena— eso ya no era posible.Y desde luego no hay ninguna evidencia histórica de tiburones nadando por allí.
Bajo la arena había un auténtico laberinto de pasillos, jaulas y plataformas con poleas.
Desde allí subían animales, decorados o gladiadores directamente al centro del espectáculo.
Era como un enorme escenario teatral con trampillas.Los juegos podían durar días.
Cuando el Coliseo se inauguró, el emperador Tito organizó fiestas que duraron cien días seguidos.
Las crónicas dicen que murieron miles de animales durante aquellos espectáculos.Con el paso de los siglos, el anfiteatro siguió utilizándose, aunque cada vez menos.
En el siglo V los combates de gladiadores desaparecieron y el edificio empezó a deteriorarse por terremotos y saqueos de piedra.Durante la Edad Media incluso se usó como fortaleza, cantera y barrio improvisado.
Muchas piedras de palacios e iglesias de Roma salieron literalmente de sus muros.Y aun así, casi dos mil años después, sigue en pie.
Quizá porque, más que un simple edificio, el Coliseo fue el lugar donde Roma mostraba su poder, su espectáculo… y también su lado más brutal.

In occasione del centenario della morte di Erik Satie (1866–1925), l’Accademia di Francia a Roma – Villa Medici, in collaborazione con il Festival Nuova Consonanza, dedica una giornata intera a uno dei compositori più radicali e affascinanti della modernità.
Giovedì 11 dicembre 2025 il pubblico sarà invitato a un’esperienza immersiva e prolungata in cui musica, parole e immagini si intrecciano per esplorare la complessità poetica, ironica e profetica di Erik Satie, figura chiave del pensiero musicale del Novecento, precursore del minimalismo e delle sperimentazioni concettuali.
Al centro della giornata, l’esecuzione integrale di Les Vexations, opera composta nel 1893 e strutturata su una breve frase musicale di 16 battute da ripetere 840 volte. L’esecuzione, della durata di dodici ore ininterrotte, sarà affidata ai pianisti Carlo Benedetti e Isenarda De Napoli che si alterneranno al pianoforte Pleyel “Debussy” del XX secolo, parte del patrimonio di Villa Medici e recentemente restaurato. Il pubblico potrà assistere liberamente alla performance, entrare e uscire, lasciandosi coinvolgere da una musica che sfida la percezione del tempo e invita a un ascolto lento e profondo.
In parallelo alla musica, il Grand Salon ospiterà letture continue tratte dai Quaderni di un mammifero, testi aforistici e surreali che restituiscono lo sguardo ironico e visionario di Satie sul mondo. I brani, tradotti in italiano da Ornella Volta e pubblicati da Adelphi nel 1980, offrono un contrappunto verbale e intimo alla rigidità strutturale di Les Vexations.
Nel Salon des Pensionnaires, la giornata si arricchisce con la Chambre d’échos, installazione sonora e letteraria realizzata in collaborazione con la Bibliothèque publique d’information del Centre Pompidou. Questo spazio invita i visitatori a esplorare le tracce lasciate da Satie nella musica contemporanea, attraverso conversazioni immaginarie, suoni, testi e opere ispirate alla sua figura. Un ambiente immersivo che evidenzia l’attualità del suo pensiero e il suo dialogo con le forme artistiche del XXI secolo.
Il percorso continua nel Salon de Musique, dove saranno proiettati film legati alla vita e all’eredità artistica di Satie. Tra questi Entr’acte (1924) di René Clair, film dadaista nato dalla collaborazione con lo stesso Satie, e Satian Satie (2016) di Juruna Mallon e Luca Parente, un ritratto visivo e mentale che indaga i vuoti, i silenzi e l’estetica della ripetizione tipica della poetica satiana, attraverso paesaggi urbani e manipolazioni sonore.
Alle ore 18:00, nella Sala Cinema, sarà presentato il libro postumo di Ornella Volta, Erik Satie en notes et en mots (Presses du Réel, 2025), una biografia monumentale che raccoglie decenni di studi, intuizioni e materiali inediti. La conferenza vedrà la partecipazione del pianista e musicologo Jean-Pierre Armengaud, di Matteo Celli Volta (figlio della studiosa), della scrittrice e giornalista Tiziana Gazzini e del compositore e direttore d’orchestra Marcello Panni. Sarà l’occasione per rendere omaggio a una delle più grandi studiose di Satie e per riscoprire aspetti poco noti della sua personalità e del suo metodo compositivo.
Alle ore 20:00 seguirà la proiezione speciale di Sisters with Transistors (2020) di Lisa Rovner, con la presenza della regista in sala. Il documentario ripercorre le storie straordinarie delle pioniere della musica elettronica, come Clara Rockmore, Éliane Radigue, Delia Derbyshire, Suzanne Ciani, rivelando come le loro sperimentazioni abbiano riscritto il panorama sonoro del Novecento, in profonda risonanza con lo spirito innovatore di Satie. La proiezione sarà seguita da una conversazione con Vittoria Bonifati, direttrice di Villa Lontana. Per questa proiezione è necessaria la prenotazione (gratuita).

@byrnensorg I think that the solution will have to be a new principle of compliance: that the courts will not entertain applications from people who systematically disrupt court hearings and/or defy court orders.
This principle is already applied to #VexatiousLitigation. You are not permitted to use the courts as a tool for malicious damage.
Similarly, you should not be allowed to seek assistance from courts which you treat with contempt. So Burke should not be allowed to challenge the #DAP.
