We are working on some much needed upgrades to #Sandstorm. We have a pull request out (Huge thanks to Michael Nutt!), and this will hopefully be the first of many! In particular, this upgrades:

* Mongo 2.6 -> Mongo 7.0
* Meteor 2.3 -> Meteor 2.16

Would you like to help out? We would greatly appreciate anybody who can help with:

I'm having the problem where I need to make an icon for the sandstorm app I've been working on and I'm suffering total writer's block.

I guess In fairness, this is what I get for making a to-do app. Literally the most boring idea, literally the most boring icon.

But I can't think of anything to try that isn't just " some check boxes and the emacs logo" and I'm sure even that won't fly because I'm sure the GNU folks aren't going to appreciate that I used the MIT license instead of the GPL.

Announcing my Sandstorm app, OrgTodo: A todo-task tracker with integration into emacs org-mode.

This is very, very preliminary: alpha only, might eat your data, lots of missing features. But it scratched an itch: org-mode is great for tracking tasklists, but emacs is hard to run centrally and then access on my phone or via arbitrary browsers. And, with deepest respect, it looks like emacs, which is hard on the ol' eyes in a mobile context. 😉

Working with #sandstorm and it's interesting... Rather than make you build a web service on top of centralized storage infrastructure, it spins up little virtual machines as "grains" and those have a filesystem, so if you don't want to set up a central server, credentials, etc you can just use something that writes to local files as your backing store.

I've got something prototyped out using sqlite but hand-building the sync protocol between client and the server receiving messages and updating its DB is becoming a chore.

Absolutely hammering my way through prototyping a sandstorm app.

How am I doing on time, org-clock-report?

Adventures in #sandstorm continue at a reasonable clip.

Part of me wishes it were opinionated about data storage, but the rest of me likes the idea of sharding data by each grain basically being its own environment because it frees me up to do things like "I'm building a very low-capacity, low-collaboration app... Y'know what? I'm just stuffing my data in files with #sqlite. Done."

I've previously written about how I can't currently recommend EtherPad on Sandstorm.

I'm currently prototyping a task tracker in Sandstorm, and overall, as a developer, I do love what I see! It cleverly separates the problem of account and document management from the problems of web application creation and storage. Documentation is very clear and only a few challenges so far in understanding the abstractions.

As a framework / platform, I currently can recommend Sandstorm if you want to create a Google Drive-style web document service that you can maintain and manage yourself. And the great thing about it all being open source is that (were there infinite time in this world) I could at least pry EtherPad open and sort out what's going on with its performance; good luck doing that with basically any online document service.
